NewsCenter 16 takes pride in highlighting children in the community that choose to do the right thing in life.

That's why WNDU-TV sponsors the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department's Do the Right Thing program.

Four times a year the department holds a luncheon to honor 10 children that are hand selected to receive the award at a quarterly luncheon.

Among the latest recipients, are two Discovery School students who choose to do the right thing, together.

Unexpected discovery
"I just signed out to go to the bathroom and my friend Derek was there too and we found a check for $75 dollars outside the bathroom," describes 6th grader Ryan Parmater.

Derek Birdsell, also a 6th grader, said, "We both picked it up at the same time."

Ryan says, "I sort of wanted to keep it cause I had the kid's parent's signature, and it had his identification number, but then that would be wrong. So we just gave it to Mr. Metcalf."

"Derek and (Ryan) turned in the check immediately to their Science Teacher Dave Metcalf," explained Sergeant Bill Redman of the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department.

Mr. Metcalf nominated both Ryan and Derek for the St. Joseph County Do the Right Thing Award.

"I got a call about Do the Right Thing and I was completely shocked," says Derek.

Ryan says he was "Excited, but also kind of surprised cause I thought everybody else would do the same thing."

Both were rewarded for their act of integrity.
