Every year thousands head out to the St. Joseph County Fair. For many it's about the rides and fair food, but it's important to remember that the fair wouldn't be possible with out the work of the 4-H organization.
For those involved in 4-H, now is the time to get registered to display those projects you've been working on all year! Enrollment for the organization is currently open, and the deadline to enter projects in the St. Joseph County fair has been extended through March 15.
4-H is now bringing science and engineering into the curriculum, making the organization a more comprehensive learning experience.
“I love to see how they grow into adults,” 4-H educator Anna Williams says. “They get so excited over their projects. It doesn’t matter what kind of ribbon they won.”
4-H educator Matt Bellina also notes the number of adult volunteers needed to help organize and judge the more than 140 project categories open to students. They work with more than 400 adult volunteers with all sorts of skill sets, from agriculture, to medicine, to mathematics.
“If you have a skill yourself and can share that with the youth, that’s wonderful,” he says. “But most importantly, work with our kids. Go through the changes, and they can do the hands-on work.”
