NewsCenter 16 believes there are a lot of young people doing positive things every day.

That's why we sponsor a St. Joseph County Sheriff's Program called Do the Right Thing.

Four times a year a group of young people is honored for doing the right thing in a variety of situations.

One of the latest recipients is Clay High School Senior Natasha Caston.

Excelling beyond circumstances
"Natasha Caston is a young woman of great character. Experiencing trials beyond her control, she has chosen to rise above her circumstances and become responsible, dedicated and caring," said Sergeant Bill Redman of the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department.

The 18-year-old hasn't always been dealt the best hand in life, but she continues to excel by setting high goals for herself.

"My main goal is to make straight A's and B's, but sometimes I get C's. I'm not too excited about C's, but my mom and them keep tellin' me that that's good," says Natasha.

"She is an exceptional entertainer and sings with the Clay High School Choir," said Sergeant Redman. "She is also involved in the swim team at school and participated heavily in church activities."

Through it all, Natasha credits her strength in life to her relationship with God.

However, she doesn't plan on wrapping up her education at the end of high school. Her desire for success takes her higher.

"I plan on going to college. I want to join the Navy or Air Force, whichever one is like more pointed toward nursing because I want to be a nurse," says Natasha.

Natasha's good friend Emily Allison recognized the odds Natasha continues to defeat, which is why she nominated her for this special recognition.

Sergeant Redman said, "Her great attitude and responsible behavior is why she has been chosen for the Do the Right Thing Award."

Preparing for future
As Natasha waits for school to start again next month, she does hair for friends and family members during her spare time.
