It's not uncommon to hear stories of people defending their homes and themselves from intruders-- but when it's a 70-year-old woman, that story is a bit more uncommon.

It's exactly what happened in St. Joseph County on Sunday night, after an intruder broke into an elderly woman's home on Portage Road.

The woman held the man at gunpoint until police arrived. That man is 28-year-old Cyrus Brown. Brown is being held in jail on a number of charges, including burglary and intimidation.

The woman who defended herself is Sandra. She asked us not to use her last name. Newscenter 16 spoke to her by phone Monday night, while she recovered in her hospital room. She’s being treated for heart problems, problems she didn't have until Sunday night's scare.

As you'll hear, this 70-year-old is a gutsy lady who wasn't about to let anybody mess with her.

It was all started about nine o'clock Sunday night. Sandra says she was in the midst of splitting wood for her fire and making vegetable soup, when she heard a ruckus outside.

“All of a sudden, I’m hearing fast footsteps around my yard, around my deck,” says Sandra.

That's when she says she grabbed her gun and called 911. Moments later-- the intruder-- 28-year-old Cyrus Brown, broke through her back patio door, pushing his way through the glass.

“Immediately, I felt there was danger because he was so desperate,” explains the 70-year-old. “He's in the kitchen by the stove, I told him to get down on the floor. I said if you come any closer to me, I will shoot you to kill. I told him to sit down, don't move, and I want to see your hands at all times,” adds Sandra.

Newscenter 16 obtained the 911 call that Sandra made. In the background, you can hear her demanding the suspect get down.

911 call:
Dispatch: “Ma’am, where is he at in the house?”
Sandra: “Get, get, get! You have more to fear from me!”

911 call:
Dispatch: “Ma'am, are you holding him at gunpoint?”
Sandra: “Yes, I am. And if he moves towards me, I'm afraid I'm going to have to kill. I don't want to have to kill him.”

In that moment, Sandra says she was glad she had a gun and knew how to use it-- just in case.

“I thought that this could turn out badly because I heard of other people being murdered in their house, but I decided, I wasn't going to go down without a fight. I owe that to my children,” she explains. “Guns aren't all bad, only in the hands of the criminal and guns can be a good defense.”

In the end, you can hear the relief in Sandra's voice, as the police arrive at her back door.

911 call:
Sandra: “Cops!”
Police: “Get down, get down!”
Dispatch: “Ma'am, can you put the gun down for me please?”
Sandra: “It's down.”
Dispatch: “Great, great, ok!”

If you'd like to listen to Sandra's 911 call in its entirety, we have a link at the top of this story.

Sandra is a mother of three and has several grandchildren.

She's set to have a procedure on her heart this week. As you can imagine, this whole situation has caused the 70-year-old a lot of stress.

She says she hopes others can learn from her story and think about protecting themselves. She’s hoping to have a neighborhood meeting in her area to discuss safety in homes.

ORIGINAL STORY: NEIGHBORHOOD REACTION

A man is in custody Sunday night after police say he tried to break into a home on St. Joseph County's northwest side.

It happened in the 51000-block of Portage near Brick Road.

Police say 28-year-old Cyrus Brown drove off the road and hit a utility pole on Portage. He then attempted to break into a nearby home.

When police arrived, they found an elderly female named Sandra holding the driver at gunpoint, awaiting their arrival. Sandra tells us she was scared to death and yelled at Brown to stay down. She says he begged her not to shoot.

"I would give her thumbs up and tell her to keep up the great work and I'm really proud of her," Lanore Evins, Sandra's neighbor, says. "He probably didn't want anyone to know that happened to him. That's probably a little embarrassing for him."

"He was a little combative at first," explains Sgt. Bill Redman, St. Joseph County Sheriff Department. "The officers had to wrestle with him to get him to comply with their orders. He didn't mess with the homeowner though."

Sandra is in the hospital with heart problems she says stemmed from the incident. She says her doctors say the situation caused too much pressure for her. But Sandra hopes her story inspires others to stand up for themselves.

"Doesn't surprise me about any of us around here. We all fight what's ours," says Phyllis Barkley, Sandra's good friend. "Don't mess with the gray haired people! We still got a lot of fight in us."

Great story! Hope she's doing well. I think she did the right thing. She held him until police arrived. If he was simply seeking help, then the police were there to give help. She was very clear with what any further movement on his part would result in (being shot). I'd love to have her as a neighbor.

GOOD JOB and GOD BLESS this Woman!!! If we had more people like her, we would have less crime in my opinion. More people need to know that the Police can't do it all and can't be everywhere all the time>

A great job by this very stoic lady. I must say that the Police Dispatcher was to involved about the Lady's weapon and seemed more concerned about the intruders well being than the 70 Year Old Lady. I understand that dispatch has to watch out for the welfare of their officers but not at the expense of the 70 Year Old Lady. Dispatch should not have told her to put the weapon down, the officer at the scene should have done that. The lady could have been injured in a moment in time by putting her weapon down before she saw or spoke to the officer in her home. Lets protect the citizen not the offender!!!!

This woman deserves to have her local fans send her flowers when she has her heart procedure done! Great example of home defense and her ability to keep a level head while under extreme stress. Down here he would been featured in the obituary section if he had broken into most homes in my neck of the woods!

I believe in self-defense and taking the proper training as to know what to do when the time comes to put that training to use. However, I think we are closer to the end times for private gun ownership since the national election on 11/04/08. Obama, et. al. have a severe anti-gun agenda and we have a real fight on our hands to defend our 2nd Amendment Rights.

This lady deserves kudos for remaining level headed enough to control a situation that is frightening to anyone. She did a great job of keeping herself safe, and a man that had broke into her home under control without having to take a life. As a former police officer, an NRA member and someone that has been around guns my whole life, I congratulate her on remarkable restraint under terrifying conditions. That is responsible gun ownership, and that is why training is important. God bless this lady, and though it will make a lot of people mad, God bless the young man, that did not die. Maybe he will realize that an angel was sitting on his shoulder, and will become a person who helps other people.

So he resisted police officers who had their own guns, but wouldn't put up a fight against an elderly citizen. They know police have Use of Force criteria, but they're not sure about citizens. This is why more law-abiding citizens with guns equals less violent crime. As for some of you online rambos and gunshop commandos, good luck keeping your shirt after legal expenses when the scumbag's family sues you for wrongful death. She did right. Just because you may be legally justified in killing, doesn't mean you should do it. You are not the new sheriff in town cleaning out the scum. Remember the phrase "minimum amount of force necessary". If presentation of a gun will do the job, good. If it takes deadly force, so be it. I have a very strong suspicion that all the tough guys and gals saying the old lady should have gone cyclic have never had to take a life. it's easy to be tough online, isn't it?

dan, (have the self-respect to capitalize your own name), Walther is absolutely right and you are one of the best 'weapons' the Anit-Gunners have. People like you who advocate shoot first and who think that shooting someone rather than protecting your own (and family's)life is your right are the 'ammunition' that they use against us and the second amendment which says the 'right to bear arms will not be infringed'... it does not say the 'right to shoot anyone who does something threatening shall not be infringed'. Sandra did exactly the right thing, she stopped the threat. If shooting had been necessary because the threat had not stopped, then that's what she would have done (I believe), and at that point been justified in doing so. But when the threat stopped without shooting, everyone, particularly Sandra, was better off. Guns stop far more crimes than shots from those guns do, and that's the way it should be. Walther, thanks for speaking up. Stoney (USMC '67-75, NRA, CCW)

I`m 60 years old now and have seen a lot of change in my time. My wife and I carry Lic. Hand guns for our protection . We both shoot @ our range once a week , an average of 250 rounds each or more ,each week " mainly because we injoy the sport of shooting targets. we are able too do this because we reload our own ammo , cost wise . It also helps keep us very well trained on the use of all the weapons we use and shoot. It`s like instead of bowling on Wednesday nights, we go to the range and shoot with our friends...Our night out together . We have Never had to use our weapons for defence , Thank God" but Very prepaired if we do. It is our right to self protection in our home Or away from our home. Our home is very well protected with Motion Detech. Video-Audio Equipment, Sign`s posted saying so. I belive that is the biggest reason we have never had a problem @ our home" My hat`s off to the eldely Lady , and how it turn out. But be warned Thugs, Never brake into our home...Dallasbugman

Sandra, you are a very courageous woman and you have my respect. I hope you get to feeling better soon. Sandra did what every "Responsible" gun owner hopes to do in a similar situation. No intelligent person really wants to kill another person. To say you would is simply an emotional (not an intelligent) statement. Those of you reading these comments about shooting first and calling 911 after should not judge all gun owners in this same way. I believe that most gun owners would do the right thing when confronted like in this incident. I know I would. I would shoot to kill only if I was being threatened with grave bodily harm. I do recommend that more people purchase and own a firearm, but ONLY IF YOU ARE GOING TO OBTAIN A TWO OR FOUR DAY TRAINING CLASS in the use of the weapon and will commit to practicing regularly with the weapon. Just buying a gun and not getting proper training is an accident just waiting to happen. BE SMART AND DO THE RIGHT THING!

Posted by: NOLAdoc Location: NOLA on Jan 10, 2009 at 02:19 AM
Having been in a similar situation (victim of an attempted armed robbery) and having had to use a weapon in self-defense, I can attest that it is a very stressful situation. Those advocating "trying to find out the bad guy's motive" for committing a crime or "shooting him in the leg" or demonstrating other forms of armchair quarterbacking only show ignorance about crime, the laws re: self-defense, and the stats that universally and clearly demonstrate that when good guys are allowed to own/carry guns, crime goes down. Sandra will be in my prayers. Though she did not ultimately have to shoot the perp, she was a trigger-pull away from killing a person out of fear of her life or grave bodily harm. I know she'll find support from friends, family and others. Though the officers familiar with my case were supportive (no trial,) the politicians and police chief ran to the media to protest my actions, talking about "the wild west," etc. People need to try to understand the real world.

I will pray for you sister! Im proud to listen/read about this in a positive way.You were not a victim because of your own self defense. This is what idiot liberals want to take away from us.I guess what they prefer is to read another statistic, while shaking their heads. They defend the frigging criminals and want to take this freedom/right away from us.You did good and right.Im proud of you.No one ever wants to be in that position, but you were prepared and trained. NOTE to the liberal DAN > mister,I hope you are confronted with a situation that makes you brown out your shorts.then lets see how you feel about legal weapon possession.I dont wish you death or harm, just to be scared to peices wishing you had a form of defense like Sandra!!! Dan says, "You sir, shouldn't even own a dart gun, because you wouldn't know how to use it, as you have NO INTENTION of ever using your guns. Your guns are just for show, and serve no purpose. The number one gun org. in the world, the NRA, backs individuals when needed, in court. Do everyone a favor and sell your guns to someone who will use them!" Are you really that ignorant? Are you under the impression that the NRA wins every court case that they help out with? The answer is no. You Dan will be in the prisons with the criminals if you keep thinking the way you do.... So do us all a favor and sell YOUR guns because you are going to hurt innocent people with your shoot first, think of all else later mentality. Walther: You are absolutely right - WITH RIGHTS COME RESPONSIBILITY.

Wow dan. You should seriously consider anger management counseling. I can see now why you are willing to shoot at any bump in the night. I just hope for your friends and families sake, they are not the ones who fall victim of your trigger happy attitude. I fail to understand how, because I am not willing to take a human life before assessing the threat, I should not own a gun. I am willing to defend ANYONE with deadly force if such is required. But with rights come responsibility. I'm glad to see there are many other responsible citizens who seem to share my thoughts.

Posted by: dan on Jan 9, 2009 at 02:26 PM
r, the only stupid people are people who don't own a gun for self defense. Just take South Bend for example, the crime is worse than Indianapolis. It's upper crusty liberals like yourself that are trying to take away gun rights. If your laws get passed by "obama", (the chosen one that everyone just loves and beleives that will save us) then this old lady would have been robbed, beaten, raped, and most likely killed and mutilated. Osama/Obama (same thing) is trying to tax guns 500%, so all gun owners - go buy guns before he gets in office! Hurry!

walther, you obviously don't understand gun laws either. Indiana has laws that allow you to protect yourself, using deadly force. Indiana has one of the best self defense allows in the country, allowing you to defend yourself if needed. You sir, shouldn't even own a dart gun, because you wouldn't know how to use it, as you have NO INTENTION of ever using your guns. Your guns are just for show, and serve no purpose. More people need to understand that the Police can not protect you unless they are with you. The Bad guys know this. The Police show up after you have been Raped, Beat, or Killed. Guns are only a tool, good honest people can use this tool as well as a bad guy. All it takes is an open mind, Good training, Practice and a mindset that you are not going to allow you or your family to be victomized. Most people are good. But There are those that will take advantage of you, and will not give a second thought of hearting or even killing you. Think of this, If you are a bad guy and know that if you walk into a business with the idea of robbing that business. And you know that every one in that building had a Carry Consealed Weapons permit. And know how to use a Weapon, what do you think the bad guy will do. I say this to those who say lock up the guns. I hope its you or your family that has to deal with the bad guy and not me or mine. If you are againt protecting yourself, maybe you deserve it.

dan, you're a prime example of someone who shouldn't own a gun, for your own safety. Read up on gun laws again before you say someone doesn't know what their talking about. She handled the situation very admirably. I normally wouldn't respond to such a comment, but you and the other's who say she should have shot are an extremely bad example. When you shoot, even in clear self defense, you better believe their will be a trial and that every gun-hating liberal will be there to prove that you shot prematurely or unjustly. I'm not saying the guy wouldn't deserve to get shot, I'm just saying you need to protect yourself from all threats. The burglar, and those that would want to lock you up for defending yourself.

I pray that I'll never have to take a human life, but if someone breaks into our home and I can reach one of my guns in time, I'll never know their motive because dead people don't talk. The right to self defense is not just guaranteed by our constitution, but is more fundamentally a God-given right. Sandra, I'm so glad that you survived, and pray that your heart heals soon. God bless you!

GO GRANNY!!! More people need to stand up to criminals. I hate to think what would have happened had she not had the gun. "Don't mess with the gray haired people! We still got a lot of fight in us." I'm afraid these two ladies are part of a dying breed,my generation (I'm 26) is brainwashed by the liberal media and the public schools that 'guns are bad,' 'you should never fight,' and often if you're bullied in school and fight back you recieve the same punishment...who's idiotic idea was that??? This 70 year old woman was SPLITTING WOOD!! Most of my generation couldn't take care of themselves if they had to...they expect the government to do everything for them and believe it's bad to fight for what is rightfully yours (I bet the founding fathers would disagree...they started a war to fight for their rights!!) They believes it's a virtue to just let the criminal do whatever and not even resist-that's not a virtue-that is stupidity. WAKE-UP!! stand up for your rights before its too late

That old lady should have shot him, he could have jumped up and got her. Walther, you don't know what you are talking about, so stop speaking. This old lady took a chance by not shooting that guy, as she should have.

Apparently liberals are people who either never had, or could never imagine a life or death situation where your hesitation might just cost you, and your family's their lives. Life or death situations occur all over the world all the time. And yes, there is a difference between good and evil. For every one crime committed with a firearm, there are 10 cases of people defending themselves with one without a shot being fired. I'll take the high road everytime. I'll protect myself, my children, and my neighbors if need be. I'll even protect my ex-wife! My mom is 82, and asked me to teach her how to shoot. She said crime is getting bad in her neighborhood, and she lives in fear. Apparently liberals are either fearless or ignorant. Way to go Sandra!

This is a great example of sensible self-defense. I hope those who said "shoot him" take some training and/or don't own a gun. That's a quick way to get put in jail for murder or assault. To the nay-sayers: why do you keep assuming that she knew he was in a wreck. All she probably knew was the sound of breaking glass with a stranger entering her home. Any sane and sensible person would have thought "burglar" or worse. I think it would be a huge mistake to ban guns. There are many things that are illegal (like drugs) and the criminals still find a way to get them. If we make guns illegal all it would mean is that the criminals and government officers are the only ones who have them, leaving the honest citizen defensless. How many violent attacks do you think take place within arms reach of a police officer?

Posted by: John Location: Missouri on Jan 9, 2009 at 10:02 AM
Outstanding, I don't know anyone who could handle such a terrifying situation any better than this lady did. For those of you out there that want to ban firearms take notice of this incident, and the thousands of others just like it that go unreported every year. Good people own guns, smart people learn how to use them, and all of this goes to REDUCE violent crime. In the real world there are NO safe places, and everyone has to take responsibility for his and her own safety. Get an alarm system, get a good dog, get competent training and keep your guns at the ready. I applaud this lady, and send my most sincere admiration of her courage and tenacity under extreme stress. Hoo-Rah!!

Steve you should thank the NRA for their work. It goes hand in hand with the most recent #'s. Homicide and violent crime are down! So far down that it hasn't been this low since the summer of love, which I am sure you are still stuck in! Wake up people! It is our right to stand up for ourselves if our government agencies can not or will when they arrive! Support the NRA and support your natural GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS!! My prayers go out to this woman, and Steve quit being mean to 70 year old ladies. Freakin' Paramecium Brain. Love Samuel in GA!!

I am glad Sandra is doing fine, Get well soon! I think everyone needs to take this as a lesson learned. She protected herself and her property, No she should not have shot him unless completely necessary. I am a proud pistol packin Momma. Get a gun license and proper training. The mayor cant protect us, our police have far too much to do. It is up to Us to defend ourselves.

She's a awesome woman not a granny! Have some respect.

Posted by: Gregg Location: Niles on Jan 8, 2009 at 10:22 AM
First let me say I am pleased to hear that she is doing fine. These comments, most positive and a few negative are for the most part probably well-intended. To the nay sayers know this; unless you have been in her shoes, you cannot know the fear, the nervousness and heightened physical sense that comes with a shot of adrenalin. Many years ago I confronted a would be burglar outside our home (when we lived in S. Bend, IN) trying to break in. I had him at gunpoint and I experienced all those things I just mentioned. My advantage over Sandra was considerable: martial-arts training, powerlifter and in my mid-thirties. My point is, living in the NW side of South Bend, she made the right decision long ago by getting professional handgun training. Then unfortunately, when the situation arose, she kept her focus, did not take her eye off the criminal and kept herself from becoming a violent crime victim statistic. Good work Sandra and God bless you.

Right on Sandra - way to go! You don't take grief from nobody! Stand up and protect what's yours. This is why legal gun ownership is an individual right.

This is a good case for the death penalty. If he were to have put my mother in this uneasy position I would be waiting for his release from jail so he could get a long overdue lesson on respect.

When seconds count, the police are only minutes away! It is better to have a gun, and not need it. Than to need a gun, and not have one.

D.I.L - I'm so glad to hear your mother-in-law is on the mend. What an awesome woman she must be! I must admit I was one to say "Go Grandma!" but that is so inappropriate here. She was terrified, yet strong and courageous and still showed genuine concern for the intruder. WOW! And chopping wood and making vegetable soup! She's my hero!

Our family has read all these blogs, some good some bad, I'm really surprised at a few who worry about why he did it or what condition he was in or race. How would Mr. Brown want his own mother to act in the same situation. Would he worry that she's still not home, and worried every day how she's going to pay the hospital bills, why is she the one who has to suffer the after effects. If this man was truely hurt or being chased why didn't he go to the Fire Station he crashed in front of? think of that. Instead he came from behind the house a wooded area and only started yelling after she saw him and ran. We are all very proud of her and hope that other elderly (sorry Mom) people will learn to defend themselves. It has surely opened my eyes.

Posted by: Rach Location: Granger on Jan 7, 2009 at 03:10 PM
Way to go, grandma! She's doing fine, if anyone would like to know. It's amazing...growing up listening to her always telling us "what if" stories and always be prepared in case something bad happens. As kids you think "Oh, that'll never happen to me." I'm so glad she was prepared because something bad really could have happened. It brought me to tears listening to the fear in my grandmother's voice on the 911 tape and I am so proud at the way she handled the situation. I can only hope I have half her strength if I were ever in the same situation. We love you very much, Gramma Keys! And get well soon!

Steve: Goshen Jan 5, 2009 08:50 PM bleats: ”A lawbidding citizin gets angry with his wife and shoots her in front of their kids. What does the NRA think about that?” The NRA probably thinks the same about this as all the rapist, drug dealing, innocent murdering, and wife murdering cops that are constantly in the news. Go you think all the donut-chomper “Barney Fifes” should be disarmed as well?

Posted by: Ed Location: SBI on Jan 7, 2009 at 09:39 AM
I am thrilled that the homeowner was not injured and had the means and ability to protect herself. I am happy for Sandra that she did not have to shoot him. Her dialogue with 911 was also ending a message to the bad guy that she was willing to shoot him. She had physical and psychological control over him, which is ideal for the safety of all involved. "Shoot the knee" is horrible advice. If the situation is dire enough that you need to fire a weapon, it is dire enough that the threat must be stopped immediately, that means head/chest shots. You are not shooting to kill, you are shooting to stop the threat, and the odds are highest the threat will be stopped with head and chest shots. Death for the bad guy is an unfortunate, but possible side effect of stopping his threat. By breasking into your home, that bad guy puts his own safety below yours on the heirarchy of good things. Your safety demands that his be compromised, but that was his choice, not yours.

Have you ever wondered what people looked like back in the day where they were first evolving and wandering around on the Savannah?

Posted by: Dean Location: Omaha on Jan 7, 2009 at 12:39 AM
As a NRA member, we believe the same thing any sane individual does. If you live with someone that is mentally unstable, there are legal means to have the weapons removed, and there are programs to help you leave. You stay, it is your own choice and responsibility. The weapon of choice isn't the problem. The individual human being is the flaw. You would leave a law-abiding granny defenseless to save a criminal that already ignores the law. If you cannot see the lack of logic in that, you are as hopelessly confused as the criminals that think they have the right to break in and take what they please. Posted by: Steve Location: Goshen on Jan 5, 2009 at 08:50 PM Well a gun may have worked out in this situation, but it sure screwed up the lives of that family in Winamac. A lawbidding citizin (sp citizen))gets angry with his wife and shoots her in front of their kids. What does the NRA think about that?

Posted by: Dean Location: Omaha on Jan 7, 2009 at 12:28 AM
Learn to shoot, then learn to shoot under pressure, then ask a lawyer, and you will *understand* why. You have seen far too many movies. The idea is to not have to shoot AT ALL. Posted by: Riley Location: Mishawaka on Jan 6, 2009 at 10:25 AM Why not just shot him in the knee to keep him down?

Posted by: Brett Location: VA on Jan 7, 2009 at 12:23 AM
Some of the comments are just stupid. He wouldn't have hurt her anyways. How do you know that for a fact? If someone is breaking in to my home I can only assume he or she is there to do harm to me or my family. Right there I am in fear of my life. I will do what ever it takes to preserve me and mine. If you would not do the same you are not Human. It is amazing my community has 28 homes in it and over 20 have firearms in the home. We have 0 crime. Huh I wonder why? The worse thing that has happend here is a bike got stolen.

Great Job. She did just right. No talk of killing when she had him checked and the police were on the way. Surprise that the 911 told her to put down the gun. She knew how to use it and that should be recognized. The police aren't the only ones who can handle a weapon! They should appreciate her expertise.

These comments about "you go girl," "go granny," and "good job" are ridiculous. I agree. She doesn't deserve an award. She was defending herself. She sounded terrified. I read a comment about this story being funny. I don't see anything funny about it. I'm glad the woman protected herself and unlike one comment stated, didn't think about why he could have been in her house. If someone broke into your house, I'm sure you wouldn't even have the time to think. You'd go by instinct.

Some have commented that the man was looking for help as he had just hit a utility poll. You don't break through a patio door if you are looking for help, you ring a doorbell or knock. When you break through a door you are looking for trouble, and, he found it. Good job Sandra.

To Riley, She did the right thing. The last thing your worried about when a criminal comes into your house is to carefully "shoot em in the knee"... I dont know how you aim is, but i sure do know your heads not where it should be.

Posted by: Michael on Jan 6, 2009 at 04:22 PM
"Why not just shot him in the knee to keep him down. Why would she jump straight to kill." Because a knee is a tiny target, and very difficult to hit when it's in motion, even at close range. Outside movies and TV, "shoo thim in the leg!" is _not_ sound advice, and will get you killed if you try it. Responsible defensive gun use means shooting for the chest--a hit to that area maximizes the chances of stopping the attacker before he can hurt you, and minimizes the chances that a missed shot will endanger an innocent person in the house next door.

Posted by: NRA Location: Granger on Jan 6, 2009 at 04:16 PM
Steve in Goshen, you have a vaild point about guns, but you are in a fog. It is sad about that couple and the hsuband killing his wife. But hey, let's face it he could have used a car, ball bat, knife, poison, etc. You will NEVER take our guns, so get used to it. Like Jerry said, training and education is the key.

I have read some posts and I think some of you are not thinking about this. A reference to why someone is breaking into your home seems to be popping up. Why does this matter? No matter what kind of trouble he is in, that never grants him permission to break into a residence. When someone breaks into your home I hope you think intruder, get armed and get help comming. If you think why is he here youll be dead, beat, raped, etc before you know it. I myself would have shot the guy once in my home. I dont care if someone was chasing him. He is now a threat to me, my family, and everything else I have worked hard to establish for myself. I have a door bell, and he has a hand to knock. If he doesnt want to exercise his options for safety, I am not required to give him any.

Mary: You're right; not EVERYONE is bad; but the probability is that if someone has a certain look, the chance that they are bad is too great, greater than half. I know someone who is covered in prison tats, long hair and looks like an ex member of the hell's angels who is the smartest, nicest guy you could know... but the PROBABILITY is that when you see someone who looks like that, they are not going to be the nice, witty and urbane. I'm not letting a swarthy looking male with his pants part way down into my house to use the phone just because there are exceptions to the rule. That would be dumb.

The defence of your home is a right given to you by the law. From reading the comments and the article again he did not KNOCK on the door but rather tried to get in some way (not clear how. But once he was inside he is fair game to the home owner or occupant. Most are right a shotgun does carry the fear factor much more than a handgun and is easier to aim. But a person with a hand gun will usually have some training I would hope. But still your sacred or nervous anyway and holding a person with a shot gun will get more effect than a hand gun. Just my thoughts. YES I do carry legally all the time.

I applaud the grandma also for protecting herself.Maybe this will start getting rid of these thugs who think they can do what they want in our city. The police can only do so much, then its up to the law abiding gun owners to protect themselves, & who refuse to be a victim.

What a differece a writer makes! Had the writer of this article started with his third sentence instead of his first, we might have had a better understanding of the situation. Since we're finally told in sentence three that he CRASHED FIRST and "then attempted to break into a nearby home" we can assume that either 1.) He was driving too fast 2.) It was slippery out 3.) He was drunk 4.) He was "fleeing and alluding" or 5.) He was talking on his cell phone. In THIS situation, I really don't think his mode of operation is to cause an accident so he has an excuse to check-out the insides of someone's home. If he did, he DEFINATELY picked out the right home. From the comments I've read here, the whole town of South Bend is ready & waiting for the next one to come around. It seems to me that the majority of people just read the first sentence of this story and then immediately reacted with their comments. Sometimes we need to think twice. I'm sure glad that lady did.

Trespassers will be shot, survivers will be shot again. I am always armed, and ready to defend myself, family and property. I am well trained in the use of deadly force and can hit what I aim at. I applaud you lady.

Good part about Indiana is you have access to gun permits. Sad part from a person who has carried and will carry as long as possible is there isn't enough training required. Everyone talking about how great a hand gun is for home defense must either live alone or doesn't know what a Handgun or Rifle bullet can do. If you truly want something for home defense get a shot gun. They have fewer accidental shootings and the correct shot won't travel past the room you are in. Plus not to mention if granny would have had to shoot him try shooting someone with a hand gun when you are scared GOOD LUCK. The average gun owner to be honest most likely couldn't use it if there life depended on it. What everyone should be happy about is that he didn't take the gun away from her and use it on her. We need more training before people buy a gun.

She probably WAS terrified...but atleast she DID the right thing, instead of becoming a victim! Shoot him and one less one someone else has to worry about! I'm a REDNECK!!

Robert 9:53, your a moron. The cop was a baby crying because he got knocked out by an old lady! Personally i think the police force needs to look into hiring 70 plus year old ladies, seems they are tougher then the cops in that city!

First of all, way to go sister!! Secondly, this is a great reason to keep your doors locked. People shouldn't be just busting into your house under the guise of HELP! Yeah, he was looking for help, hiding from the police.

Posted by: dave Location: south bend on Jan 5, 2009 at 01:51 PM
good job? great story? go girl? what is wrong with you people? that poor woman must have been terrified? what kind of city do we live in when an elderly woman has to arm herself just to stay home?

Posted by: MTJ Location: Mishawaka, IN on Jan 5, 2009 at 01:40 PM
Lady, YOU ROCK!!! THANK GOD for people who are not afraid to take responsiblity for defending themselves, their homes, and their families!Good for her....I wish that I could buy her lunch or send her flowers! We have SO much to learn from this responsible gun owner. We need MORE "Annie Oakleys" out there! Would have loved to read THAT police report! :)

Posted by: South Bend on Jan 5, 2009 at 01:20 PM
You go, girl! Time to step up and take care of crime ourselves. All I would like to say to you young people.....instead of committing a crime, join the military. Maybe there would be hope for you......why would you want to spend your life in jail or even prison???

Posted by: worker Location: indiana on Jan 5, 2009 at 01:17 PM
Too bad she didn't end his criminal life for good. At least she is safe and he is locked up until some judge lets him out to do his thing again.

Posted by: Mike Location: Plymouth on Jan 5, 2009 at 12:56 PM
BRAVO! Glad to see that the proper use of firearms is reported. As for the criminal's state of mind, if he was lucid enough to realize that he had a gun on him and to hold still he was lucid enough to realize what he was doing. To every gun owner out there - Take Grandma/Mom/Wife to the range! She may just save her own life one day!

I too am more than ready to shoot any thug that breaks into my home. I just hope his next of kin are able to pay to clean up all his blood and guts that will be left on my property. Its time for people to start taking steps to eliminate these thugs from wasting our air. There is NO reason for anyone to break into anyone home ... NO REASON AT ALL!

Posted by: South Bend Resident Location: South Bend on Jan 5, 2009 at 12:07 PM
It's good that she protected herself and kept him there for the police, but the article did read that he was just in an accident. Maybe he was just breaking in to get help.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 5, 2009 at 12:04 PM
Linda, I'll bet you are naive enough to think your vote for Obama is going to help our country. When if fact if Obama has his way this woman wouldn't have had that gun to protect herself!! By the way I have a bridge for sale real cheap.

Good for the homeowner. People need to stop being victims in their own homes. I'm glad to read that the lady was okay. What a story to tell the grandchildren.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 5, 2009 at 11:16 AM
Gee.. It's so good to see good people arming themselves!!.. Wasn't there a guy who got killed last week trying to do a home invasion but was shot by the home owner? These criminals are stupid, why would they risk their own lives (even if they hold little regard for others) Everyone is armed and ready for these criminals now. Everyone I know (including myself) has guns hidden, loaded and waiting for these thugs, it's a shame it's come to this.

Posted by: Megan Location: South Bend on Jan 5, 2009 at 11:08 AM
To Linda in Granger, are you kidding me? Seriously now if someone was trying to break in to your home are you going to stop them and ask them first what their intentions are before you call police or harm them? I'm sure if someone needed help or was trying to hide they would knock first or think twice about breaking into a home. Use your brain cells. Anyone comes into my home and they will leave with a few bullet holes and then really need some help.

Go granny go!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 5, 2009 at 11:00 AM
There is no reason to break into someones home, even if you're hurt from a car accident. You knock on the door, if no one answers you go to the next house and try again. This person was un-injured enough to walk to the first house and un-injured enough to BREAK IN ! This person could've (and possibly should've) very easily been made into an example of how dead home invaders can quickly become. I wouldn't have been as brave as this woman, I would've assumed he was armed and fired on him.

You GO GIRL!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jan 5, 2009 at 10:45 AM
Great story. More people need to protect their homes....it's the only way to beat the thugs. You just have to do it with some common sense (this isn't the movies you can't just go shooting right away). I think this lady got it right--good for her! It would be a shame if he wandered/broke into her house not realizing what he was doing because of potential injury from the car accident then shot by someone a little quick in assessing the situation.

Posted by: MJ Location: SB on Jan 5, 2009 at 10:39 AM
Anybody who thinks she should have shot him is an IDIOT. I believe in protecting yourself and your property. But killing someone is a last resort only if your life or the lives of those around you are in danger. She did the right thing. Now had he tried to attack her, fire away! (B.T.W. Most of you are a bunch of trigger happy fools who I hope don't own guns.)

Anyone want to complain about the N.R.A. now?

Posted by: Jim Location: St Joe on Jan 5, 2009 at 07:54 AM
My first reaction was the same. Shoot the low life if he breaks in my home. Then I wondered if maybe he had a head injury or something from the crash and he didn't realize what he was doing. The homeowner did right. We all need to arm ourselves and take appropriate action when necessary.

Posted by: Linda Location: Granger on Jan 5, 2009 at 07:43 AM
I agree with most of the comments. However, a person has to remember that there could always be another reason for someone trying to get into your home. It's a possiblility that a person is trying to get help or hide from someone that is trying to hurt them. This could especially be true of a younger person. Just make sure that the intruder is actually trying to rob or kill you before you fire a gun. I know I'd hate to kill someone that was just wanting help. I know that's a slim chance but it could be. Think first. I'm sure the homeowner is glad that he didn't have to kill someone. Let's just hope that the police do their job now, and the court system.

Posted by: Charles Location: Berrien on Jan 5, 2009 at 05:39 AM
Depends on if he got inside or attempted to. Once inside I promise you, your dead. But to be safe if attempting to get in then they (he) did the right thing and used restraint. We need more people doing this and we would have fewer attempts at breaking in to a home. GOOD JOB

good for the home owner. this is why more people should feel comfortable arming themselves to protect both their property and their lives from people who dont care about either.
