Police have released the names of the Warsaw couple killed in a plane crash in eastern Tennessee Saturday.
According to our sister station, WVLT in Knoxville, the Grainger County Sheriff says 64-year-old Lowell Owens and 51-year-old Susan Owens died Saturday afternoon when their plane crashed into a mountainside.
It happened in the mountains near Washburn, about 35 miles northwest of Knoxville.
The Federal Aviation Administration says the Owens’ were the only people on board the plane, on its way to Gatlinburg.
Rescue teams say the plane went down at Clinch Mountain.
The plane was owned by Warrior Aviation of Syracuse. Owner Bruce Jackson says the couple were friends of his.
Grainger County, TN Ssheriff Hames Harville believes the plane clipped the northern side of the mountain.
He says apparantly one person was pinned inside.
FAA spokesperson Kathleen Bergen says the pilot did not file a flight plan, but most private pilots don't in clear weather.
Bergen says it's too early to determine what caused the crash.
She says the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate what went wrong.
