Around Michiana Friday, drivers were slipping and sliding all over the roads.

In fact, the conditions were so bad that three counties declared a state of emergency.

LaPorte, Elkhart, and St. Joseph County all decided the roads were just too treacherous for drivers.

Earlier in the day near the US-20 bypass, there were multiple accidents, and caused the road to be closed in both directions for several hours.

US 31 South near Lakeville was closed in both directions for several hours, but has since been re-opened.

Parts of the Toll Road were closed as well, but are re-opened later in the day, after more then 50 wrecks were reported.

Drivers were frustrated as they attempted to get to their destinations, only to be beaten down by old man winter.

I've been driving for 37 years and I've never seen anything like this in my life," said John Suher. "It started to rain real light this morning on the way to work…we had approximately 12 13 cars down at this intersection with another 30 to 50 cars both ways trying to get around and it just created more of a mess," he explained of the situation.

In fact, a WNDU news car was involved in an accident, as a car skidded off the road and hit our car, which was stuck in a snow bank.

There were no injuries, and only minor damage to both vehicles.

And, much of South Bend was without power in the morning hours, but Indiana Michigan Power says they have restored power for all of their customers.

The inclement weather has also caused officials to postpone multiple area high school basketball tournaments that were scheduled for tonight.

We have got a complete revised schedule on our website, just head on over out home page and click on our sports section.

And for updates on all the closing in the area click on the WNDU Business and School closings banner.

Stay with Newscenter 16 throughout the morning for the latest on the weather.

Al, easy there. If you would of checked..the roads were fine before 5am. The problem happened fairly quickly. By the way...there is no hyphen in Rocket Scientist. Quotes are to quote a person..not for emphasis, which should be italics. And holy run on sentences.

And Al, I happen to be an engineer. Go ahead and try my high school science fair project if you are not afraid of eating your own words. Put the salt in first, but don't be surprised when it gets diluted.

Posted by: Mitch Location: Mishawaka on Dec 28, 2008 at 05:48 PM
Al, you are a real jerk! Thats fine...put the salt in with the water. It will freeze! Why don't you google it before you hurl insults. You have no idea what you are talking about.

Anyone with half a brain would hae stayed home till it was safe to go out and drie. Guess you people had no brain at all. You deserve whatever you got.

A bunch of stupid people you all are. Why did any one bother to go out and drive in it. Did you look out your window before you left? The roads were a sheet of ice. You could not wait a few hours till it warmed up a bit? Stupid that is all I can say all of you out there. Your employers should have understood if you had to wait a few hours to come in. If not they are as stupid as you.

People need to slow down and know how to drive. I have found that many vehicles do shift out of over drive to third or second gear which will help to maintain the vehicle speed without going faster. The lady that side swiped a BMW this morning was flying past me as I was driving 10 miles an hour. I had to laugh when she was the one that flew up the curve and hit the mail box and BMW. I had to just toot my horn as I past her driving to work this morning. If she would of slowed down and not been in such a hurry she would of been fine. I wouldn't want to be her insurance carrier.

The problem with Mitch’s little elementary school science-fair project (posted at 7:00PM) is that he unwittingly tells us to start with an inch of ice. Mitch must have used the same faulty software for his “experiment” as the street department uses for their “snow removal” program. If you wait for an inch of ice to accumulate BEFORE you apply an ice-melt and/or salt application, then you most definitely WILL have a problem. As such, I thank you for your little experiment, Mitch, as applying salt ON TOP of an inch of ice will only give you the dangerous combination of uneven surfaces and water on top of ice (JUST LIKE OUR DISASTROUS STREETS). Mr. Rocket-Scientist Mitch, as well as the street department, should work on their “forward-thinking” skills, so as not to embarrass themselves any further! Until then, we are at the mercy of the weather (not to mention, mental-midgets such as Mitch).

To Mitch@6:51PM: Actually, it is YOU who is misinformed, my diminutive friend. (Is your last name Daniels?) In places where salt was used over the past week, the roads are clear and safe. Read the other comments Mitchie-Boy – the general public knows from past winters what the street department is capable of accomplishing, versus the dangerous conditions which have recurred for nearly a month now on our streets.

Worst driving I've seen in 28yrs of driving.Had to work Christmas night, sucks.Driving home challenged my abilities to the edge.Going down hill required in some spots me driving on edge of road where the dirt is,going up hill inc speed some to get up the thing. 15m/hr driving all the way home. Surprised the county didn't put sand down. Oh,and salt worked on my driveway so I'd think it would work on the roads :/. Seriously, this was dealt with about as bad as it could have been. I'm sure there's plenty of anger to go around. I know I was ticked! If I can drive through it,then where the hell were the trucks that can put sand/salt down?? This situation with not wanting to spend money to make roads safe is gonng cost lives...it's sad. They could have at the very least hit some key intersections and the main highways. I'll bet this makes folks look pretty hard at studded tires..I know it is me! Can't rely on Gov to protect us,obviously. Oh,and couldn't the salt trucks use studs? Unprepared....

I have been driving in the same horrendous road conditions as all of the people who were in accidents. It would be nice to blame the road conditions but I have yet to even slide let alone loose control of my vehicle. Perhaps people should learn to drive better. I wouldn't let most of the drivers on the road drive a nail, let alone a car. The drivers are worse than the road conditions.

Slipslidenaway, I personally witnessed at least 10 times within an hour, salt trucks losing it on SR 19, Elkhart. (they were trying to salt) Delivery trucks & trash trucks were experiencing the same thing. Cannot blame anyone for this but mother nature.

Posted by: Mitch Location: Mishawaka on Dec 26, 2008 at 07:00 PM
Sorry Tom..the mail did not run today..they pulled the trucks off the street..don't blame them one bit after trying to get to my truck. Al..let's do a little experiment. Take a baking pan and freeze 1 inch to 2 inches of ice in it in the freezer. Add some snow if you want, but not necessary. After it is frozen, apply a layer of ice melt or eqv. salt on it. Wait about an hour or so and see what the results are. I already know. Your freezer is just as cold as it was last evening. Better yet...spritz water on it every half hour like it did this morning with rain.

WNDU...it would be wonderful if you could do a story on how road salt works with an expert so all these people who are arm chair civil engineers would shut up! They have no clue! Goodness sake..google road salt and you will learn a lot people. They city is not obligated to put themselves in danger just to get you to the mall or grandma's house for another dinner. Chill out.

Posted by: Mitch Location: Mishawaka on Dec 26, 2008 at 06:51 PM
Al, you are completely wrong! If you had done any research today you would of found that 6 salt trucks slid off the road! We have not had temps above 20 degrees for about a week now..matter of fact, they have been around 12 or lower over night. Salt will not work efficiently with those temps. Salt is designed to work when it can be plowed or scraped within a few hours or the brine will refreeze. They can't plow when the trucks cannot stay on the roads. It was indeed severe out this morning...you must of been sitting in front of your computer all day complaining. Disgruntled Worker...legally your employer cannot dock you when there is a snow emergency..it is against the law.

Is the mail running today?

Posted by: Al on Dec 26, 2008 at 03:53 PM
No Salt = Snow emergencies and serious accidents every time we get an inch of snow...and don't tell us how salt doesn't work at a certain temperature, as we have only had a day or two where that would have been a valid excuse. There ARE places (few and far between) where salt HAS been used and those roads are clear and safe. Someone is gambling our lives with their poor financial and street management skills! Their “computer software” they have bragged about, is an obvious failure. We haven’t even had a severe snow or ice storm yet and we have read about many accidents with injuries and fatalities. Salt IS available, it is just more expensive. Even MORE expensive are the bills from body shops, increased insurance premiums as well as medical and funeral expenses.

Trust me people the toll road isnt any better. I tried to go Michigan City light house this morning and had to turn around. I drove half way in the tol road and stop mid way due to accident or unknown reason, i waited 45 minutes and decided to turn around and head home. Wasted 2 hours for nothing.

Posted by: Pat Location: Mishawaka on Dec 26, 2008 at 11:32 AM
Nice reporting WNDU....it would have been nice to know how bad the roads were before I left the house this morning. I watched your morning news, only a mention during the weather of icey roads and "give yourself extra time". How about the WORST road conditions ever in the 30 years that I have been driving!! I would have stayed home.

I left home at 5:00 am today to visit my sister in Missouri. Only made it to Bridgman and had to turn around. There was absolutely no traction on 94 and even the semis were sliding at 10 mph. I was planning to try again later this afternoon but now she tells me they're expecting tornados this evening. Crazy weather!

Posted by: T Location: Goshen on Dec 26, 2008 at 11:04 AM
I saw an (Goshen) ambulance fish tailing on the ice and it almost went sideways in front of Peddlers Village this morning around 10:00am. They (driver and passenger) thought it was funny as they were having a good time laughing? WOW!

Posted by: Joe Dirt Location: Ditch west of South Bend on Dec 26, 2008 at 10:26 AM
It is so dangerous out there the police chief should make the decision to close all roads. I tried leaving for work after 5 this morning and luckily was able to turn around and get back home.US 20 is a death trap, poppy road is a death trap, the bypass and tol road are death traps. Heavens, South Bend is a death trap without ice on the roads. Where is the Mayor during all this duress? Take care of the roads and citizens.

Just to let all know that the new CR 17 from goshen-elkhart is absolutely terrible!! please be careful!!!!

Posted by: Zach Location: Goshen on Dec 26, 2008 at 09:53 AM
Cars in front of my house are having major issues getting moving again once stopped at the stop sign - the road there is completely flat. One truck is already off the road and her husband's 4x4 Denali SUV just cannot seem to get traction to get her unstuck. Makes me wonder what's going on at the intersection of CR18 and CR13 in Dunlap... ewwww.

HANG UP AND DRIVE! Your only as good as the worste driver on the road with You!

Posted by: David Location: North Liberty on Dec 26, 2008 at 09:42 AM
Was this weather a suprise? A little pre planning and some salt would have made it much safer to drive. Where was our highway department/street department? US 31, SR 4 = death traps. Puzzled.

Posted by: Anonymous on Dec 26, 2008 at 09:39 AM
where are the SALT TRUCKS?????

Quit being tightwads St Joe County HotShots or BigShots.....whatever you want to call yourselves....although, I have a better term for you "knuckleheads" that wouldn't make headline news anyway.....so, I will stick with the word "knuckleheads"... open up your wallets and afford the well needed salt and put it on the roads, seems like you can afford to open your wallets for a raise, let's put lives first and not yourselves first!!! Let's put the required salt needed on the road this morning.....I was late 30 min and left early 15 just to get to my destination Point B, from Point A.

Posted by: Ray Location: South Bend on Dec 26, 2008 at 09:17 AM
I am mad as hell these dumb county commissioners should have closed this county down until at least noon. this mess is terrible the highway department is having trouble getting around to salt the roadways. the county should be shut down...

It is extremly dangerous out there. The roads just look wet but I have a Jeep and I was all over the road.I cautiosly stopped my vehicle and stepped out to see what I was driving on...yes pure ice. I had three Large trucks in front of me we were not traveling over 15 miles an hour, with flashers on. Two slide offs in Bremen. Be very very careful. 4-Wheel drive doesnt do a bit of good in these conditions.

The Indiana Toll Road is also officially closed between 72 and the Illinois state line. Be careful!

Once again the roads were a sheet of ice this morning. I did not get to work because the roads were simply not safe. Where were the salt trucks????????
