Police say icy roads are to blame for an accident that killed an Elkhart man.
The accident happened this morning on the St. Joseph Valley Parkway just over the US 20 Bypass.
Police say Dennis Ryan Massengill, 33, was driving his pick-up southbound when he lost control on the slick roads and hit a barrier wall several times.
A semi driver was unable to avoid the pick-up and slammed into it.
Emergency crews had to free Massengill from his truck, and he was taken to a hospital in critical condition. But police say Massengill died from his injuries just before 1 p.m. today.
They say it’s a sad reminder about the dangers of black ice.
"Black ice, basically the roadway looks like it could be wet or dry and you don't realize it's ice and you get on it -- and all of a sudden you're losing it and it can sneak up on you, and like I said, it's very common on bridges,” explains Sgt. Bill Kraus with the South Bend police.
The crash is still under investigation.
