Three patrol officers with the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department have been recognized as lifesavers in the community.
Patrolman Todd Horner acted during duty at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds on July 19. Officers were called to assist a man who was choking while eating, and Horner performed abdominal thrusts to dislodge the food from the person’s airway.
Patrolmen Michael Bennett and Scott Gould assisted an individual who was choking and unresponsive during a Oct. 27 call for service in Millersburg. Due to the officers’ intervention, the man was breathing normally by the time he was taken for medical treatment.
The three officers are the first from the patrol division to receive the lifesaving medal since 2000.
