The tough economic times have taken many in Michiana to the breaking point.

Organizations in Warsaw say that’s a big reason they’ve put together the first homeless shelter to serve Kosciusko County in the last five years. The unemployment rate, that had been at a steady, healthy level there for years, is now up to around 7%.

The Salvation Army says the homeless population in Warsaw isn't visual out on the streets; it's people that are living in their cars or in abandoned homes.

With winter coming into full force, they say the need for a shelter was becoming desperate.

“We had a call from a woman just last week… She said, ‘I'm homeless I have four kids with me, right now I’m living out of my car, when are you guys going to open?’ And that’s tonight,” said John Lowe III with New Life Christian Church in Warsaw.

Monday night will be the first of 90 nights that the New Life Christian Church's gymnasium will become a homeless shelter.

“We don’t want to have a situation where first of all someone freezes to death in a car, or they’re asphyxiated. That’s unacceptable, in any situation,” said Ken Locke, with the Salvation Army, which teamed up with the church to get the temporary shelter up and running through the end of February.

The hope is, aside from possibly saving a life, a few nights and a few meals might put someone back on their feet.

“It’s ‘I’m out of work and I’m stuck in this situation,’ and sometimes a place to stay, a meal, and equipping them maybe with a contact that’s looking for someone who wants to work; that’s all they need, and that’s what we're trying to do,” Lowe III said.

The last homeless shelter in Kosciusko County was also in the church 5 years ago. Then, no more than 14 people stayed on any given night.

But based on what they've heard, the shelter will need to be ready to handle many more than that.

“We really don’t know how many will show up tonight. We’re planning right now for at least 20, and we have up to 40 that we can help. But we’re ready for 20 for sure,” Locke said.

They say while the shelter is temporary, the problem likely isn't.

“This is the short term solution and then were going to sit down as the Salvation Army along with the other groups that have been involved with this, to look at long term solutions in Kosciusko County, to address homelessness,” Locke said.

The Salvation Army says they plan to meet in January to discuss a more permanent solution; such as a permanent shelter, or at least one that's available year-round to deal with the increasing need.

The shelter will be open from 7:00 pm to 7:00 am and will serve dinner and breakfast.

People won't be allowed to stay during the day, but they will be provided transportation to and from the police and sheriff's departments in Warsaw.

I the Assoc. Pastor here at New Life where the shelter is. I have been in Ministry for 5 years. The first night the shelter opened we had a single Mom and her 4 kids from 2 month old up to 5 years old. We as a church would deal with as you said " the scum" to help the one that are truly in need. We have a food bank here as well I once helped a lady with food who told a great story of how she didn't even have enough to feed her kids that night crying most of the time. I went to Aldis for some bread real quick from a phone call I had with my wife as I walked in their was the lady who need food so bad. With a cart almost overflowing with food. She stood stunned, for a second as I know I was. You will always have those who will abuse your time and generosity, but that does not mean you stop meeting needs around you.

Great for all of you who want some of the scum that live in the CFH, come and get them. Not all of them are scum, but many are.

I don't think you read Marine Mom correctly. She simply was stating that this is a much needed thing for the community. I don't think she's trying to rip anyone's heart out, simply stating that some of the comments are obviously not thought through before they are sent. Maybe if the comments were verbal they would be taken in a different manner, but keystrokes on a computer do not have inflections and can sometimes seem extremely rude and insensitive. I am just thankful that her Marine is able to protect US, as in our country and the citizens. I also understand how negativity can be read in a lot of comments out here. This is something good the community has done but the first post casts a negative spin on it. Blessings come by and all people like Anon and Warsaw can see is negative instead of the help that this can give those in need that may just be down on their luck a little bit right now. Maybe lost a job this year? This church is trying to help them. Good for the shelter!

I think this is a good thing. With how the times are bad right now, some people have lost their jobs and homes by no fault of their own. Think about if that had happened to you. Wouldn't you want a place you and your family could go to if you had nowhere else to go.

Sheesh, can't you people EVER have anything nice to say. Some of those that continuously comment on stories should be banned from doing so.These people, some through their own fault, others through circumstance deserve to be warm every night just like you.Get REAL!If this helps just one family stay alive and not freeze to death this winter it will all be worth it.I for one am PROUD of my community for doing this.We are a fortunate community in that we do not have very many that are in this much need, but those that are now have a place to sleep. We are a very giving community when it comes to those that are in need and we will continue to be this way as long as we are able.Just look at all we have, shouldn't some of it be given back to those less fortunate?NOT ALL,NOT A MAJORITY, but a little of what we are so blessed with can mean so much to those families that are hitting hard times.I'm not saying support them,I'm saying assist with what YOUR heart says you should.Put yourself in their shoes
