Back in July, our 2005 Ford Explorer was getting 20.5 miles to the gallon when we tested it without the Hydro 4000.

After we installed the device, the Explorer got 23.3 miles to the gallon -- an improvement of nearly 3 miles to the gallon.

The Hydro 4000 works by using the vehicle's electrical charging system to create hydrogen gas through electrolysis. The hydrogen gas travels through a hose to your engine and combines with gas from your gas tank to fire your cylinders.

"If you're burning the hydrogen, it's not gonna need as much fuel, so it will cut down the fuel consumption," explains ASE-certified mechanic Bill Rackley from Rick's Auten Road 66.

The Hydro 4000 cost us $1,200 dollars, and should be installed by a certified mechanic.

When the unit was first installed in July, it was placed behind the passenger-side rear tire because there was no room under the hood, which would have been the preferred location.

Because of the distance from the engine, the people who make the Hydro told us the mileage may not improve as much as it could.

So after our initial test, Rackley wracked his brain to find a way to shorten the distance to the engine. He found a spot behind the passenger side headlight, although it required removing the washer fluid reservoir.

The other factor limiting our success was the lack of mileage driven with the device attached. We had only driven about 400 miles on the Hydro when we tested it back in July. The manufacturer recommends that you drive at least a month or 1,000 miles in order to get maximum mileage improvement. It takes that long to get all the carbon out of the combustion chambers, which in turn should create a cleaner burning engine.

Over the last four months we ended up driving 5,000 miles with the vehicle.

During that time we did have some issues.

We blew about a half dozen fuses in the ammeter that controls the Hydro 4000. That's because you need to add four ounces of distilled water to the unit about every 100 miles or so. But if you overfill it or underfill it, the mineral levels can become unbalanced and cause a spike in amperage.

Unlike this Hydro system, new models allow you to better regulate the amperage and avoid blown fuses.

So with the Hydro 4000 mounted closer to the engine and thousands of miles under our belt, it was time, once again, to gauge the mileage improvement. Like in July, we drove the exact same 210-mile route, which took us through South Bend and Mishawaka, but mainly on the toll road. We drove at the exact speed limit.

After the test, I filled up the gas tank and prepared to do some calculations.

It turns out that we got 20.5 miles per gallon on our latest test. That's what the Explorer got before we installed the Hydro 4000 back in July.

This time, our mileage went down nearly three miles to the gallon.

Rackley checked all our connections and confirmed that the device appeared to be working.

Despite this surprising result, Rackley says he believes the Hydro 4000 and systems like it do work.

He thinks it may not work with certain vehicles, however.

"It could be a computer issue -- maybe this computer doesn't like the moisture going through the exhaust. The catalytic converter might be counteracting it by the time it gets back to that rear O2 sensor," he explains.

Rackley says he knows several drivers who have installed similar systems and have achieved significant results.

In fact, a television station in Florida tested the Hydro 4000 on a Dodge Durango and the mileage went from 9.5 miles to the gallon to just over 23 -- an improvement of about 14 miles to the gallon.

The official Hydro 4000 website has testimonials from drivers who have seen significant increases in gas mileage as well. Their address is www.hydro4000.com.

Finally, we would like to thank everyone at Rick's Auten Road 66 for helping with our road test.

Got one, doesn't work on my RV diesel even w/newer unit. Won't take it back. Past 30-day warranty! Takes much longer than that to prove/disprove unit! Can I recoup some of my $1200 w/tax credit? What specific tax credit/form applicable? Tnx, Art

I have seen devices like this come and go for 50 years. Just remember in life..If it's too good to be true.. it probably is.

No refund: Are we surprised that they wouldn't refund your $1400? Not really. This is a scam and it's hard to run a scam if you just give in and refund the cash. Just because you were unhappy, they should have given you the price of the unit back. So what have we learned? These guys are crooks.. So are the guys who sell Cortislim, Biolean, Metabolife, Nioni juice...all scams...

I had put a hydro 4000 in my 02 chevy after 4 tanks of fuel i noticed that my milage dropped to 13 mpg my mechanic said that the cars computer was seeing to much oxygen and increased the fuel flow.I was getting 19 mpg before, also the wires going into the cell were melting, and had caused my 230. alt to go bad. I paid 1200.for the unit and paid 200.to install it.I contacted the makers of hydro4000 and they were trying to say that I was not giving it a good enough try. And they would not refund any part of my money.

If you check the results from the station in Florida, they got a 10% increase, and one one experiment. This is fraud. Why does it need to be installed for a month? Like that doesn't make sense. And why does it need to be closer to the engine. Last explanation i heard said something about "molecular hydrogen". It's hydrogen and oxygen, it could be a mile from the engine. What a scam. $1200 will buy alot of gas. Wanna save money? Slow down.

It occured to me that I typically get lower gas mileage when the "winter blend" gasoline comes back to stations usually in september. My ford taurus gets typically 23 mpg during the spring, summer & fall when "summer blend" gasoline is in stock but it always declines after the "winter blend" is re introduced in September. "winter blend is typically cheaper to produce and is a small part of why the prices went down this fall. (they typically do go down in Septermber because of this) but the gas mileage goes down as well. Check it out. It's probably why your gas mileage went down as well. Compare apples to apples (Using Summer Blend next spring) and I'll bet your mileage goes back up. Rick.

For $1400? What a rip off. I chuckled at that mechanic saying "it could still be a good thing". For no increase in mileage over 5000 miles. remind me to not take my car to Ricks!

How 2 save $$$. D-junk ur car, xtra mass costs U $$. Inflate ur tires properly, check them at least once a month. This saves whole %age points. PremO isnt that good, only buy it if ur rich. PremO only gives a small edge in speed. Linc,Cady,Lexus,Mbenz,Bmw wont knock on ur door if u use 87/89, chances are ur engine wont knock either. Thats 20cents in ur pocket a gal. about $4 a tank. Half tanks or less r best 4 most trips. Dont fall 4 scams, gimmicks, additives, devices. The only devices in a car that can help U & save u $$ R Cell phones 4 emergencies, & sometimes Radar Detectors. A flashlight can be good 2. Their R only 4 things that save u $$. Being Smart, Maintaing ur car & tires, not speeding, & driving safe. Driving behind a semi can save u $$ but only if hes not speeding, and only if u follow less than a car length behind his aft. Which is dangerous and not 2 smart. 55mph saves at least 20% in fuel over 75mph, this is a fact, its math.

If u want 2 save gas plan ur trips. If a trip needs 10 Gal. one way, and U know ur car, fill up with only 6 gallons. At the halfway point add 5 or so 2 B safe. Sounds silly but this saves $$, bcuz ur moving less mass. Take out all xtra mass from ur car, xtra mass costs U $$$. CLEAN OUT ur trunk & interior.Xtra mass costs $$$. The air u Breath is 78% N2 gas & 21% 02 gas DO NOT SPEND $$$ to put 100% N2 gas into ur Tires. This scam costs between $5 & $8 per tire. U will lose $20-$32 & my respect!! Fill ur tires, & check them @ least once a month. This can save many $$$. IF its much colder outside check ur tire pressure! Cold air lowers tire pressure, u will need to air. These R all facts. Pay ATTENTION. DO NOT SPEND hard earned $$$ on GIMMICKS. Octane boost is a gimmick, many of them have stuff that ruins ur sensors,& ruins the catalytic converter. Dont buy magnets & devices that claim to save u money on ur car, THEY DONT. 55 mph saves $$ its called Drag Coefficient.

The LAW of conservation of matter&energy, & the LAW of thermodynamics proves that this device is a CON. What is at work is poorly educated people who R not very scientific & perhaps failed math & chemistry class in H.S. It takes energy to break H2O apart through electolysis. This energy must come from the alternator, All which lose energy converting mechanical energy into electrical energy, no exception. Some of the Electricity from the alternator when applied to H20 will be lost as heat. When a current of electricity passes through H20, H2 and 02/O3 are the products, and this is not 100% efficient, due to the electrochemical composition of the liquid, which is usually mostly H20 with some salt or sodium bicarbonate added. If u take a 300 hp SUV & give it an Alternator that makes 20kw, u will recover less than half of that 20kw back in H2, then burn the h2, more lost power. SAVE UR $1200, Improve ur life & take a class @ IUSB, so u dont get Scammed. Smart people save $$
