It's mission accomplished this Thanksgiving season.
Given the tough economic times, many organizations in Michiana were worried they wouldn't be able to come up with enough money to feed hungry families.
Just weeks ago, we talked to one of those groups, the Social Concerns Committee at Holy Cross College.
Monday night, they told us after all is said and done, there will be many smiling faces thanks to the community.
They're giving thanks to those who helped them exceed their goal.
With so many families to feed, every single Thanksgiving food basket complete with all the fixings is appreciated.
When Holy Cross College students learned St. Vincent DePaul had 500 families to feed, they got to work.
For weeks, they’ve been raising money to make sure Thanksgiving celebrations will be complete in 60 Michiana homes.
Nichole Molnar says, “We actually raised about $700 over our goal.”
Now, they're filling up the food boxes, fitting them into trucks, and finding families who are more than thankful.
Molnar says, “They just cry. Some people don't know what to say.”
We talked to a woman named Frances who received a basket.
Frances says, “It’s very well appreciated. I appreciate it. This is very special for me that I can cook in my own home and invite my family over. It's going to make a lot of difference in a lot of homes because of the economy and the high price of food.”
St. Vincent DePaul food pantry supervisors say the need becomes more clear everyday, especially in the last year.
With 500 baskets to send out this Thanksgiving, they're thankful for all of the community support.
Penny Cyr says, “It's wonderful students do it. It's exceptional and they bring us what they can't deliver.”
It’s a special delivery Frances and her grandchildren will never forget.
She says, “Happy Thanksgiving to you and thank you so much, Holy Cross.”
St. Vincent DePaul also thanks Notre Dame, St. Joseph’s High School, and the Rotary Club.
They too raised money for the 500 food baskets.
