After 44-years in the RV business, Coachmen Industries is getting out.

The Middlebury based manufacturer is selling its RV division to Forest River—a largely cross-town rival.

“The world changed in September, and it’s gotten worse, and worse, and worse,” said Coachmen CEO and President Richard Lavers.

In what has become a dog eat dog financial world, Coachmen simply couldn’t get the financing it needed to keep making RV’s. “The people that had the money were very concerned about the liabilities in the RV business and the economic situation as well,” said Lavers.

The Coachmen RV division employs about 600 workers. The sale was said to be in the best interest of those employees.

“Instead of shutting the doors and turning people on the street, they've got jobs,” said Lavers. “It’s certainly in the best interest of our employees cause we’re going to be able to preserve eighty five to ninety percent of the jobs that they’ve had in this area.”

As for Coachmen, it will continue to keep a presence in the area, by keeping its corporate headquarters in Middlebury. Coachmen is keeping its manufactured home and specialty vehicle divisions. Together those units employ approximately 700 workers.

Coachmen feels it was in a good position to turn things around in its RV division, when things in the economy turned south. Officials feel that is why they were able to sell that division instead of simply shutting down.

A special shareholders meeting has been set for November 25th.

I worked for Coachmen, every time they would tell us "ITS GONNA GET BETTER, THIS NEW PLAN WILL HELP EMPLOYEES GET MORE MONEY" we knew our paychecks would shrink. Shortly before all this took place we were congradulated on a stellar performance helping the company finally making a profit. Many many employees were laid off and told it was only temporary, I was even given a return to work date. That was 3 1/2 months ago. Now phones have been disconnected and no imformation was given to laid off employees until we read about it in the paper. THANKS COACHMEN!!!

Never underestimate the value of name recognition. Blaming Forest River for Coachmens woes is misplaced blame. If he really had an interest in Coachmen failing he could have watched the implosion from afar. Their problems started with the corporate culture developed in years past

Good Luck to all. Be observant. When Patrick investors bought Adorn, it was the Patrick employees who lost. Divisions closed one by one, no transfers. Forest River however, has been a solid company. I can not say for how it is now but it used to be an honest company and thoughtful about its employees. Good Luck to all.

When talking about laying off and/or firing thousands in the R.V. Industry and the executives keep their high paying jobs, this is no difference than any other Industry!!!! Whirlpool laid off thousands acrodss this country and the President/CEO of Whirlpool is going to make over 14 million dollars in Compensation this year. The Big Three Auto Companies are laying off thousands of employees and begging Congress for bail outs but their Executives are getting millions in compensations, private corporatesd jets, private corporated dining rooms, etc and etc! Wake up, it is happening everywhere!!!

Boss-Being educated or uneducated won't help or hurt Coachman management. This economy is an education in real life. I've talked to "the experts" they don't know what is next. The issue for Coachman and others isn't salaries its no demand. You can't work if there isn't any orders. Forest River will be able to work five days now by combining orders. They'll take the best employees and then lay off the others. Those that are perceived to complain will go first. Forest River is smart. It will come back when it does there is one lest competitor. This will enable Forest River to raise prices later down the road. Coachman, strategically speaking, was very smart. Had they not diversified into homes they wouldn't survive. Its not American to call other Americans names. They do that in Russia, Irag and Iran. We on the other hand help others. We don't stoop to name calling.

Boss why are you so bitter?? your online business degree only got you an assistant manager job at dollar general.. your a joke

Amazing how Forest River can lay people off (such as myself) & still spend all kinds of money to buy another RV company! FR doesn't care about their own employees & won't care about the newly acquired ones either! I was laid off, but didn't have 20 weeks into the job so couldn't get unemployment. When I heard this story, I was very upset! Unreal!!!

Hey I have some advice for you, you can always do what the Village Idiot has done...procreate. Yep..when you are faced with a 3 day work week, and your wife works a menial job, having a child will solve your problems.

Sounds like a bunch of uneducated rednecks to me. All RV workers know how to run a company better than the management. I know, I worked in a RV factory to put myself through college! Maybe you morons should know a little bit about the story before you speak out. Oh wait you have no brains, and your always right. IDIOTS!

I understand that people are a little upset about all this but at least someone is trying to keep some people employed. I'd rather work a couple of days a week and draw partial unemployment than have your company move from right out in fornt of you. Look at all the Monaco workers that would like to be working and don't have jobs or for that matter anyone that has been laied off. Maybe this buyout was the right ,thing to do. Time will tell. If you have a job don't complain because some of use would like to have one. There just isn't anything out there unless you have experiance and a degree.I will pray for all of you may God be with everyone this holiday season.

both the companys are doomed

if anyone thinks for one second that forest river and pete will keep coachman as a viable company, i have some lake front property in the sahara desert for sale. its called getting rid of your competion when they are at their weakest. and thats fine, but dont tell us that coachmen rv is going to be @. i promise you, they wont. i'm sure also the shareholders probable wont like what they are about to be told in december when they have the meeting.

I think Strategic planning for the future and an opportunity to make Coachmen viable when the market returns is the game plan. Believe me when I say that Mr. Buffett doesnt believe in tripping over his management team. It will get thinned out from the top down and the great thing about Pete is that he knows that production of RV's is the first priority and his support staff shrinks and grows commensurate with production levels. He is innovative and took the chance to meet with dealers before the annual show and commit to Forest River which is a gutsy move. Also remember that he has his money. His personal motivation is to take care of Forest River. Last but certainly not least, what is the alternative? Let Coachmen go bust??????

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 03:07 PM
ANSWER ME THIS. WHY IS FOREST RIVER PRODUCTION WORKERS DOWN TO 3 DAYS A WEEK. AND IF YOU DONT HAVE A INTELLIGENT ANSWER, WHY IN THE HECK ARE THEY BUYING ANOTHER RV PLANT WHEN THEY CANT EVEN KEEP THEIR PRODUCTION WORKERS BUSY AT THE ONE THEY GOT? SOUNDS LIKE A BIG 3 PLAN OF ATTACK (AND THAT HASN'T WORKED OUT REAL WELL) LET ME TELL YOU WHY. PETE LIEGAL IS A EGO-MANIAC JERK THAT GOT BOOTED OUT OF COACHMAN AND NOW HAS THE BACKING OF BERKSHIRE'S MONEY AND TRUST ME, HE WILL DISOLVE THAT COMPANY DOWN TO NOTHING.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Elkhart on Nov 21, 2008 at 02:46 PM
Well I was just laid off this week with a bunch of others, So what do they figure 85% of a 100 hard working employees building the units is? Give or take a few. Moral is extremly low in the plants, probably is not any better now. Trust me I know. Maybe they need to cut the high paid salary individuals, which inturn would help out with the obvious money issues they are having.

What does gas prices have to do with RV? RV were doomed without gas prices. There are only so many 50K-100K RV that you are going to be able to sell when they have a 20 year life space. This was doomed from the beginning. You have uneducated executives who have no business background, and did not predict that this was going to happen. They didn't diversify their company and they over employed. This is what happens to a poorly run company in a changing industry.

What? No bailout from Congress? I thought anyone could plead for one now that the automakers have opened the flood gates. Oh wait, China only wants to own portions of the LARGEST corporations in the United States since they are buying our debt right now. I guess the RV Industry is not a big fish to them.

If you read the full story on coachmens web site, they are keeping the Arboc division, so the other 15% of the employess will be moving to that location.

Posted by: Kevin Location: South Bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:57 PM
D**N Berkshire. How dare they buy Coachman and not keep all of the employees. If everyone doesn't stay, then the company can go under and close. Then none of them will have a job. Sounds like a Union philosophy to me!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:55 PM
This is great news. Now the Village Idiot will continue to have employment and will not be able to shirk his responsibilities to his children! This made my day!

Posted by: M Location: Goshen on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:15 PM
Now there's a glass half-full type of a guy. A lot of people would have said they're getting rid of 15% of the employees.

Posted by: anon Location: mishawaka on Nov 21, 2008 at 11:49 AM
lower gas prices... too little ... too late

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 11:38 AM
They'll be going down too.

Posted by: ts on Nov 21, 2008 at 11:34 AM
first berkshire bought coachman, second 85% of 2400 employees is 2040, what is going to happen to the rest? third iam sure the shareholders that bought stock @$10 to $15 (which is most of them) will not be tremendously happy with their investments. just thought starters for everyone to chime in on.
