Michiana residents woke up to many inches of lake effect snow Friday morning.

The South Bend area was hit with roughly 6 inches of snow. Viewers have reported 10 inches in Buchanan and 12 inches in Walkerton.

There is a lake effect snow warning in St. Joseph, LaPorte, Cass, Berrien, and Porter counties until 1pm Friday afternoon.

Many schools and business have been delayed or closed due to the overnight weather.

Officials want to remind drivers to take it easy, slow down, and leave early as road conditions are slippery.

Stay tuned to Newscenter 16 for all the latest on the weather.

Mother of 5 Children, I wasn't aware that the SBCSC had the power to call snow down from the heavens. Learn something new every day, I guess...

Wow!!!! It snows in Northern Indiana and southern Michagan. Who would have thought that. I have lived up here for 33 years and its always snowed, Slow down and pay attention. Oh yeah and CLEAN OFF YOUR CARS BEFORE YOU DRIVE. PLEASE?!!?!?! Or yeah and shovel your walkways so that people dont have to walk in the snow.

Posted by: amanda Location: south bend on Nov 22, 2008 at 05:53 PM
I don't know about all of the buses, but my daughters bus has seat belts. We see this EVERY year. SLOW down and leave early. There will always be those who don't and are driving crazy, don't be one of them. You knew if was supposed to snow, set your clock early and get out there and clean your car off ALL THE WAY and leave early. If we don't get what they say, then make yourself breakfast and eat at home. It's that simple!

One..the roads were not that bad this morning if you were using your head. I have seen much worse. Two...school buses are large and very heavy..they drive nothing like your car. Keep you child home if you think it is too dangerous. And please quit being lazy and clean off your car...the white out you cause to the person behind you is dangerous and senseless.

Seems that you can't please anyone anymore. If it snows they complain it is rains they complain. The funny thing is on the way to work today some FOOL from Indiana and yes Michigan has them as well passed me like the sun was out and the road dry. They were on Napier I was traveling at about 15 and they passed everything in site. The road was covered with about 6 inches of snow. I have to say the nice thing is seeing the fools in the ditch a few miles ahead. This one made it without seeing the ditch DARN. People wake up DRIVE safely. The roads are not the problem the STUPID and INCONSIDERATE drivers are. Pay attention and drive in a safe manner. Sure the posted speed limit is 55 and lower but that does not mean you have to drive like a fool. But wait sorry for that statement they know all but pay no attention at all to others.

Not everyone woke up to snow on the ground. I didn't. I suffer from insomnia ! I didn't wake up to snow 'cause I couldn't sleep last night. And I think too many people make too big of deal about any snow. It snows here and there, deal with it or move South. Lookout ! We may get another inch or two. Life in general comes with hazards and snow is one of the least of them. Mountains out os Molehills they call it.

With the crazy way that people drive, it is not just SBCSC children "in harms way" as someone put it! People risk their lives every time they are on the road! Again, it is NORTHERN INDIANA AND SOUTHWESTERN MICHIGAN and tis the season of snow. Either take a look around and see how pretty the trees look or stop complaining!

just south of the airport we got 13 inches of the white stuff

Posted by: MJ Location: Mishawaka on Nov 21, 2008 at 03:42 PM
Forget about the Blizzard of '78, just look back to New years Eve last year: There was 8 - 12 inches of the white stuff; and the best part about that was no one was out on the roads and South Bend, Mishwaka, and St. Joe County PD's reported ZERO Drunk Driving arrests.

Can everybody please remember that this is the MIDWEST???? Why is it that everytime we get snow & you don't plan extra time to get to where your going is it the snowplow driver's fault????? Please remember that these men & women have bosses & are told what to do. Most of the street departments are called out by the poice when the roads get bad. I don't know about in South Bend but my husband was up & gone at 4am to plow the roads so that they would be clear in time for people to go to work & school. It is Winter people!!!!! How about a big THANK YOU to all the hardworking people that take care of the roads for us in the cold & snow!!!!!!! I know I appreciate what they do & the time that they spend away from their famalies (esp on holidays)!!!! Keep up the good work City of New Buffalo!!!!!!!!

No Way!!! It snowed last night? Good thing I read the news or I wouldn't have known...geez.

Posted by: Sg Location: South Bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 02:21 PM
It is now 2:30 in the afternoon and I just went down to the post office on Edison and from Ironwood to Grape it is a solid sheet of ice. It's as if this city doesn't own ONE salt truck. Geesh, where are they all at!!!

Posted by: Jake Location: South Bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 01:00 PM
Hey whiners, slow your butts down! Complaining because the streets have snow on them during a snow storm....do you think theres a magic wand to remove the snow? Crews have done a great job. Instead of sitting on your butt go shovel your sidewalk, clean the snow off your vehicle then move to Utah!

Posted by: Greg Location: Granger on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:54 PM
Your one of the lucky AND smart ones Greg. Wish I could move there too! Enjoy the sunshine state. This place is depressing, gloomy and cold. Summers are WAY to short.

Posted by: Jay Location: SB on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:43 PM
I hate you Greg :)

I just remember going to the Mall on snow days when I was a kid. Whole place would be packed with teens. That brings up the question, if you can get to the Mall then why can't you get to school?

Posted by: Jen Location: South Bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:31 PM
S.B. - You shouldn't have to contact the Mayor. Anyone in his office or any office can see that the roads are not cleared. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that we need better street services.

Posted by: Greg Location: Florida on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:22 PM
Roads here are clear and dry, and it's sunny outside...oh that's right, its Florida...and that folks is why I moved here 3 yrs ago.

Posted by: sue Location: sb on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:11 PM
It is hard for me to believe that snow days are impossible to budget in for IN each year; the SBCSC bus staff is VERY short staffed - they had the bosses driving this morning! One even hit a deer! People were sliding all over the place, and kids are NOT belted in, in case you don't know. Whatever happened to safety first???

Posted by: Kelly on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:08 PM
I agree with Tim....clean off your car and slow down! I myself passed many drivers that barely cleaned off their windshield.

Posted by: Conrad Location: South bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 12:07 PM
WOW is the the first time it has ever snowed in northern Indiana? No so why do people always freak out when it snows. Global warming is a natural phase for the earth, look at the ice age or should I say ages.

Posted by: Josh Location: South Bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 11:52 AM
Stay away from the Bypass during these times when it is snowing outside really hard. Go through town instead. Or stay home instead of venturing out onto the bad roads. If you are going to drive in this, drive with extreme caution at all times. Tell them tailgaters to get off your bumper! If they rear-end you, it's their fault, not yours! Not to mention that their insurance will go up.

IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE SNOW MOVE SOUTH!! IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE COLD...MOVE SOUTH IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE WAY THE SCHOOL SUPER DOSN'T DELAY SCHOOL.. HOME SCHOOL THE KIDS OR MOVE SOUTH. WINTER IS A BLESSING FROM GOD. IT IS BEAUTIFUL P.S GLOBAL WARMING IS REAL. HOW DO YOU EXPLAIN THE MELTING GLACIERS ALL OVER THE WORLD!!! DUMB PEOPLE..AKA BEEF!

Please do not post in all caps. Thank you - WNDU.com

We all know we have snow in South Bend. I live on the south side of South Bend. I find it very amusing that the roads are horrific until you reach 933 north and Riverside Drive. Miraculously the roads begin to be plowed and salted, they even get better as you reach St. Joseph's High School. As far as contacting the Mayor....don't waste your time. You will either get a secretary who will tell you he isn't in or that you need to call someone who handles that! Guess our Mayor doesn't have an open door policy, doesn't want to waste his time with the taxpaying citizens, or just doesn't care. I tend to vote for the latter!

Posted by: jim Location: SB on Nov 21, 2008 at 10:26 AM
Global warming is not a myth, its real and its not caused by people! the world changes, it always has, it always will. if it didn't we wouldn't be here. and its nice that we have WNDU to tell us it snowed last night, i would have never figured it out for myself!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 10:23 AM
I woke up this morning to find my my house completely covered in snow. I have been using a ciggerette lighter to try and melt my way out. Gonna be awhile....

Posted by: Anonymous Location: SBCSC on Nov 21, 2008 at 10:16 AM
The SBCSC is too big to handle a 2 hour delay. They have to make the decision REALLY early to close. Many kids in the district wouldn't have access to supervision on a snow day. Some kids wouldn't even eat a proper lunch!

Posted by: anonymous on Nov 21, 2008 at 10:15 AM
south bend doesn't do 2 hour delays & it's not because of the educators, so don't blame them. it's just not part of the contract in place...my mom is a teacher and has said multiple times that the days south bend is closed, all they needed was a 2 hour delay so it would be daytime out when the buses were driving. stop finding ways to try and blame teachers. p.s. global warming is real. i took a class on it in college and had many books and a lot of evidence.

Posted by: s.b. on Nov 21, 2008 at 10:12 AM
every year we go threw this with the roads. so until some of you actually go down to mayor s.b and mish and start complaining. no one is going to step up. so do something about it or deal with it. cause this site isn't going to help you but vent. I love winter its beautiful!!

Posted by: DJ Location: Mishawaka on Nov 21, 2008 at 10:05 AM
Ok people it snows here! Whether the snow plows are out or not doesn't mean you cannot drive,... just drive slow! You don't need to call schools off today in the Sbend/Mish area, good grief this is a dusting, winter hasn't started yet! Get a Grip Drivers!

Posted by: Jen Location: South Bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:37 AM
Since we are in the lake effect snow areas, you'd think that South Bend would have a better Streets Dept to clear the roads. I have never been anywhere where the snow is as bad as it is and not have a clear road to go to work in. Stop spending money on stupid stuff in South Bend and get some more plow trucks/salt and get the roads cleared!!

Posted by: chris Location: osceola on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:25 AM
there should have been a delay or cancellation. these educators dont understand how bad these roads get. two hour delay is not going to ruin our kids education!!! get your ego out of the way, and start making it safe for our kids going to school

Posted by: Nope Location: South Bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:20 AM
There is NO such thing as Global Warming, that is a Liberal myth! Even the founder of the Weather Channel said this recently. Snow is awesome and a beautiful sight compared to depressing rain!

Posted by: TARA Location: SOUTH BEND on Nov 21, 2008 at 09:19 AM
I was out at 6:45 this morning and I didn't see one plow from the south side of South Bend, to the west side country, and then back east to Mishawaka....NOT ONE! Crazy!!

Posted by: pja Location: south bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:59 AM
Evidently our new super didn't get up to early this morning to see how the roads were. Nothing like having these kids that drive and the school buses endangering themselves as well as trying to keep a eye on the other drivers as well. Until I saw my daughter in a slide off this morning it was CRYSTAL CLEAR that the SBCSC should of at least been on a 2 hr delay. All I can say is good start to what is suppose to be a new beginning for the SBCSC !!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe it might also be good to find out whey when driving this am I didn't see a county truck AT ALL, and when I reached town I only saw 2 city trucks. Can't say they weren't alerted on this weather coming.

Posted by: Stop Complaining on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:51 AM
If you don't want your kids in harms way during the winter months then MOVE!!! You know how the weather is in Northern IN. Anything could happen at anytime....not just when there is a little snow on the groud.

Posted by: Steve on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:43 AM
Winter has arrived! Mishawaka needs to figure out their budget for plows and salt trucks. The roads were terrible until I reached Elkhart county and then all the roads were well salted and plowed all the way into the city where I work. Bravo to Elkhart, and a 'shape up' to Mishawaka.

Posted by: J Location: South Bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:22 AM
I left early this morning to take my daughter to school. The roads were bad and slick . I ended up sliding the whole way and then I got stuck at a 4-way stop and 12 cars passed around me it wasn't until 20 minutes later that this kind stranger helped me out. I even had a parks department truck that was plowing pass me up I think thats sad.

Posted by: Tim Location: South bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 08:05 AM
I think our Mayor needs to go on TV and advise all our city Residents to Slow down and to clean off there cars , I was coming to work this Morning and saw Countless Vehicles with Large amounts of snow on the Roofs and windows covered barely could see out to drive and these were also the folks driving to fast for the conditions. SLOW DOWN CLEAN OFF YOU CARS AND LEAVE EARLIER SO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RUSH. I don't want to be an innocent Victim because of some else's lack of common sense!!!!

Oh no! Snow in northern Indiana in November! What will happen next? Get a grip folks, it's just a little snow.

Posted by: Mother of 5 Children Location: South Bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 07:05 AM
Why does SBCSC put our children in harms way every winter? I was out (by my self) last night and every single road that I was on was nothing but one big sheet of ICE!!!
