Drivers in Michiana say there was no margin for error on their ride home from work Thursday evening. In some spots, it got worse by the minute.

Just as the snow started to fall, drivers heading west towards LaPorte were startled to see a flipped over pick up truck stuck in a ditch.

Fortunately, the driver was okay.

David Butts says, “Most people do drive to fast for the conditions.”

Whether or not speed was a factor, Butts says this is a wake up call.

He was first in the line of cars stalled along State Road 2 while emergency workers got the truck out of the way.

Like us, he experienced the same driving conditions from South Bend to LaPorte.

Butts says, “Some spots, not bad at all. Coming up Bendix Hill was nasty.”

Nasty weather is just getting started.

Stores like Meijer are putting snow shovels, windshield fluid, and winter survival items on display for shoppers to see when they walk in.

Kay Holmes says, “I think tonight many will go out and say, I need my shovel. I need some salt, but they actually need to see it before they realize it.”

Josh Holston says, “I think they need kind of warning just like when there's a tornado.”

Butts says, here's you're warning. Snow can be sneaky, so be aware and pay attention to the flow of traffic.

He says, “If somebody is going slow you might have to follow them and don't try to pass them. There's a reason when someone is going slow.”

when is everyone going to slow down on the bypass when its snowing or freezing rain. everytime it snows i get a kick out of. watching cars flying by at 60mph. and when they hit that little bump on those little bridges they spin out of control.i have no pitty for anyone who thinks there cars are invinceable. and you 4x4 trucks you cant stop an a dime. in snow it just helps you. when you are stuck think bout it. wanna save money on your insurance from going up. and loosing time from work to get your care fixed. SLOW DOWN!!!

To Jessica in South Bend, that hill is always bad when ever there is new snow on the ground, regardless of weather we get 1 inch or 12, and there is not much that the Road Department can do about it, it was designed and built poorly to begin with. Best bet would be to take a different route when the snow falls, no amount of salt and sand will help, the hill is too steep. I know it may cause some inconvience, but that is what it is going to take.

Everyone knows that the government is in a budget crisis. But if you do not put salt or dirt on roads, less people are going to go out and spend what little money they do have. Salt may be expensive, but the local governments have plenty of land, dump trunks and excavating equipment to pull some FREE dirt from their ground and spread it on our slick roads. Come on Government, you have to have more than one plan.

People, BE AWARE! You have four wheels in contact with the road surface with a footprint of about the size of four handprints. It is too easy to slide when driving or braking when the surface is covered with snow or ice. SLOW DOWN and drive appropriately. Common sense goes a long way towards safety for you and others.

Why is there so many accidents? People driving way too fast...too lazy to take all the snow off the vehicles(headlights, tail lights,windshield)...dont give turn signals when turning...pull out in front of you and usually when you look in your rear view mirror theres not a car in sight(no patience)...the one that blows the stop sign to beat the oncoming traffic...the tailgater that you cant see his headlights in your mirror...their exit ramp is coming and their in the passing lane so swerve in front of traffic to make the ramp...the cell phone talker that is concentrating on the conversation instead of the road(the one that blew the light, the one that only looked one way,etc)...the list goes on and on! People arent going to change with their driving habits.Even if they kill someone or here it in the news, back to the same ignorant driving skills.I`ve become a defensive and offensive driver...thanks for giving me MY skills!

If you don't know how to drive in the stuff, just stay home; we'll all be a lot better off.

South Bend road department needs to do a bit better of a job! The roads were atrocious when I took my daughter to school! Several people could not make it up the hill to Portage on Angela, including myself. There needs to be more salt or sand on those hills, folks!

I think things would go better if people would slow down and take more time and not rush things would be fine we have this weather the same time every year give or take a few weeks.. But please slow down and take your time....
