The rash of crime continues Wednesday night in South Bend.

A man is in custody after an attempted armed robbery at a west side restaurant. It happened around 7:50 p.m. at the Popeyes in the 2600-block of Lincolnway West.

Police say the man entered the restaurant with a gun, wearing a mask, and demanded money. He then took off into the neighborhood nearby.

Police caught a man that fit the description at the corner of Vassar and O'Brien. They took him in for questioning.

Then around 8:30, there was another attempted robbery about four miles away. It happened at the Subway in the 54000-block of Terrace Lane.

Two men entered the Subway with hooded sweatshirts covering their faces. A store clerk saw the men and ran into an office to call the police.

Police later arrested Mark Baker, 25, and Donald Hogan, 31. A handgun was found on Baker. Both men face preliminary charges of attempted robbery.

This is the same Subway that was robbed just two weeks ago.

As a white person, I think all this racism is ridiculous. The color of someone's skin doesn't make them who they are inside. Everyone makes bad choices at different times in their lives but that doesn't make them all bad. All of us have to live with the consequences of our bad choices, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world should stand back and laugh. Those who laugh will get what is coming to them because what goes around always comes back to bite you.

Im displeased with what im reading. Donald Hogan is a GREAT man and his wife happens to be my sister who i adore. I cannot sit here and let you all think for 1 minute that this man is all bad. I can remember times in my life when Mr. Hogan was there for me whole heartedly when i needed him the most. Look michiana and who ever else is reading this, i am not going to "snap" on this comment blog for your enjoyment nor for your fufillment of thinking that "BLACK" americans are thugs, drug addicts, street pharmacists, robbers, or just down right criminals. I also don't think that for one second, my commenting on here will change your idiotic views or selfish immature sayings. I am a Minority in this community as well and I know for a fact that we too make a difference as well as those pale faced citizens. Are we not capable or deserving of the same respect you give eachother? We're in your every day life, positively effecting you, your kids, your family. Think about that, I got yo back sis!!

Democrat sponsored programs, free rides, more crime, more excuses to be lazy and worthless.

Posted by: What is the true story? Location: South Bend on Nov 21, 2008 at 07:22 AM
The story of the Subway attempted robbery on Terrace Lane on this news site is totally different from the story given on the the 22 news channel website. Which one is correct? The story on this site is more plausible. As soon as I determine which one is accurate, I will know which site to seek out for TRUE NEWS!!!

Of course they are going to build more "low income" housing. More trash means more votes for Democrats. This type of "person" is the base of the Democrat party. Criminals love Democrats.

Posted by: Gary N. Ginger on Nov 21, 2008 at 01:59 AM
Sheesh, gotta love that "dumb guy" look.

Posted by: stan Location: south bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 08:42 PM
maybe our judges and worthless prosecutor could have these two over for thanksgiving and give them a good talking to...

Posted by: Jennifer Location: Mishawaka on Nov 20, 2008 at 08:18 PM
You can blame the school system, the judges and the welfare system etc, but it's still no excuse for breaking the law. We are all responsible for the choices that we make. The fact of the matter is that these two men should know the difference between right and wrong.

Posted by: Section 8 on Nov 20, 2008 at 05:56 PM
Indiana recently received money for the housing crisis. South Bend put together a proposal as to how it is going to spend it's portion. Guess what SB is going to build???? You guessed it! More low income housing. The only way to get these thugs out of our town is to cut them off, not build them more places to live so they can invite their cousins from Chicago and Detroit to move in with them!

These 2 are the grossest people I've ever seen in my life. One is already practicing his tough-guy routine for the romantics there at the jail.

Posted by: Mary Location: Mish on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:53 PM
Anon I have talked to and know some of the Police Officers and they do not get a decent wage to put their lives on the line. You can argue that the blame can be put on this or that, but the bottom line is South Bend has no growth. No business wants to relocate here especially dowtown South Bend. Look at Mishawaka, it has alot of growth and for the most part it is still a safe community. I've lived in this community for 51 years and I still wouldn't want to go anywhere else but here.

When they said gimme the bucket they meant the bucket of chicken!

Posted by: Tina on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:24 PM
They look like animals, u couldn't pay me enough to work or shop on that side of town. Let alone drive thru there

Posted by: Annon Location: South Bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 04:06 PM
Mayor Luecke has given the highest raises to Police Officers in history. If you don't believe that look at what a Police Officer and Firefighter in this city was paid before he took office. In addition to the increase in salaries the technology has increased as well. You want to blame something blame the School System in this community. They take the largest portion of the tax money and year after year graduation rates decrease. You can also throw some blame on the judges. They wont sentence these criminals to any meaningful sentence and thus there is no deterant for commiting the crime. Then blame the welfare system...It prouduces baby machines who will not raise their kids. That system needs an overhaul and I see it only getting worse with the liberal politicians in Washington....Get used to crime it will only get worse.

If they want to act like animals and be uncivilized, then lock them up in a cage like an animal. PRISON. Idiots--how about getting a job...I guess that would be too much to expect out of anyone eh

Posted by: Alan Location: Elkhart on Nov 20, 2008 at 03:28 PM
And their momma's are saying... but they are nice boys!

Posted by: Mary Location: Mish on Nov 20, 2008 at 03:24 PM
Anon first they get the mace and then stun gun!!!!! My husband purchased the kind of mace they sell in police magazines. The best you can buy!!! And to: Anonymous yes they voted him in AGAIN so don't complain. You guys had plenty of times to vote Luecke out but no you keep this worthless mayor in power pocketing all the money for himself and his cronies and putting the money in the cove and "The Football Hall of Shame". Cutting the police dept not giving these men & women a decent wage so they will do their job to the best of their ability. Suffer what there is to suffer and deal with it.

Posted by: Myrt on Nov 20, 2008 at 02:43 PM
By now you would think that potential robbers would think twice before they acted. With cameras all over the place and people being more aware of the potential of crime they would not want to take the chance. Thank goodness the store clerk was on the ball and phoned the police!

Posted by: ferd Location: sb on Nov 20, 2008 at 02:29 PM
Some of us voted against Luecke and company. We just get to suffer til next time. We can complain as much as we want to!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 20, 2008 at 01:48 PM
Quit complaining about Mayor Luecke and the Democratic machine in this city/county. Everyone of you had a chance to get rid of these deadbeat career politicans that have done NOTHING for this area. YOU voted for him! Now YOU can live with the consequences.........

Posted by: Anon Location: Sorry S. Bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 01:47 PM
Quit giving these common criminals the luxury of the economy excuse - give me a brrreak! Crime in South Bend was out of control way before the economic downturn. These two are trash just like the rest - keep them in jail, no second chances. My family members are getting mace this year for Christmas gifts (forget the stun gun, you have to get too close to the fungus!)

Posted by: Willie Location: Niles on Nov 20, 2008 at 12:45 PM
I would quit thinking about it if I were you, Mary. It would really be awful to be caught thinking "Wow, I wish I had my stun gun with me" when you finally need it. Better safe than sorry, as the saying goes.

Posted by: Donna Location: South Bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 12:42 PM
Ok - when is SB (the Mayor) going to cut the city's budget and downsize the police and fireman staff? This is when we all will move out of SB and/or we will be raped, beaten, robbed and/or murdered. I understand now... why Mitch D. don't like Steve L. He can't take care of this city. Maybe, SB needs a bailout too! To pay for security and salt!

Posted by: Nick Location: South Bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 11:57 AM
I've lived in south bend all my life and i've seen it turned from a grand hope into a trash bin. They hire too many police that go after the wrong damn people and harass too many drivers for bs driving violations while someone is getting robbed right down the street. They eliminate the ethnic festival because of a shooting (every year at the taste of chicago there is a shooting and they continue, first shooting ever at ethnic festival and steve lickey or whatever his name is shuts it down) They have cut funding to after school programs, they shut down the only high school on the far west side where these problems are forcing them to disperse out, one dumb move after another. I cant wait to move to Los Angeles in the spring, finally get out of here.

Posted by: Mary Location: Mish on Nov 20, 2008 at 10:50 AM
You all have a valid complaint. You think its bad now just wait awhile, you aint seen nothing yet! If I didn't have to work in South Bend i would never come this way and I'm thinking about carrying my stun gun for protection. I would rather get a small fine then lose my life. Watch your surroungings at ALL times people.

Remember when all you heard about was crime in Gary and Benton Harbor? It's all here now. East Gary, Indiana!

Posted by: BF Location: SB on Nov 20, 2008 at 09:51 AM
No big surprise!! But let's not address it and continue to pour millions into the Cove and its grand entrance. No worries about how bad it is going west, just put yor blinders on and ignore the rest...wow and some idiots actually voted him in for another term???? When will they learn?

Posted by: r Location: michigan on Nov 20, 2008 at 09:17 AM
I hope the next person these thugs rob is carrying so they can cap their a#@ as they are running.

Posted by: Willie Location: Niles on Nov 20, 2008 at 08:30 AM
What? A robbery along that wonderful stretch of road from the airport to downtown? I'm shocked! I just hope none of the scores of businesspeople and investors flocking to South Bend were driving past at the time! Horrors!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: South Bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 07:48 AM
First a shooting spree a couple of weeks ago and now a robbery spree - excellent!! Thank goodness I moved to South Bend 5 years ago from a BIG city (1.2 million in the metro area) - I think I felt safer in the big city than this little town!! Things are definitely going the right way!! Please excuse the sarcasm!! It's all I have left in me. Also- St. Joe County please - tell my elderly Mother what her tax will be - so she can quit complaining to me she doesn't know how much money to save out of her social security check to pay her tax bill. I have never lived anywhere quite like this city (i know, I know, you're going to respond - "if you don't like it here move" - well this is where my family is.....so this is where I live. Thanks for listening.......

Posted by: Farley Location: Granger on Nov 20, 2008 at 07:44 AM
Finally some great news !! Crime is going down in St. Joseph County. We have gone from Murder to petty Robbery.

Posted by: shoppy Location: osceola on Nov 20, 2008 at 07:44 AM
OK IM taking bets since St Joseph and Lake county have the highest crime rates in the state (They both have appointed Judges not elected) that both of these people have prior records and have been on probation before with prior arrest

Posted by: CityEmployee Location: South Bend on Nov 20, 2008 at 07:26 AM
No shocker here. With luecke doing absolutely nothing about this, it's a free for all for thugs. This is doing wonmders in helping attract outside businesses here . . .nice work, once again, stevie boy!

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 20, 2008 at 07:17 AM
Next time a business closes on the west side of South Bend please don't complain about the fact that there are no businesses in the area. Remember the fact that they were all robbed into closure. Unfortunately, once ever west side business is run out of business the crocks will come east.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Koontz Lake on Nov 20, 2008 at 06:24 AM
Looking at all the headlines, and seeing all the robberies. Maybe our justice system needs to go back to how they used to handle people the stoled things. I think the punishment was losing a hand. maybe people would stop!!

Posted by: Charles Location: Berrien on Nov 20, 2008 at 05:12 AM
WOW Sure makes you feel safe coming into the South Bend area to shop for the Holidays. Sadly we can blame the economy and employment conditions for some of the problems, even though it is not right to break the law many may feel they are at the end of their ropes with no job prospects. Then again some never want to work and live off of others in the wrong way. Another reason for responsible people to own and carry a weapon for self protection and to protect others
