We are getting closer and closer to the holiday season.

And one area food bank is stepping up its collection efforts in time to bring some holiday cheer to hungry families.

The Salvation Army is getting help from the Elkhart YMCA in helping families in need this holiday season.

It is called the "Can the Van" food drive.

The goal is to see how many times the YMCA can fill its vans with food says YMCA events coordinator Jennifer Keen.

"We haven't really set a goal, we're hoping to fill the vans each at least one time, and get it over there," she added, "Right now we're at about 900 cans, so that was just what was collected this week and so I would like to maybe see that number doubled or tripled by the end of the day today."

They also want to remind you that every child that brings food in gets a free Frisbee.

You can donate food to help stock the Salvation Army's food pantry for the holiday season.

Boxes will be left in the front lobby for at least another week.

To HM: The YMCA food drive has nothing to do with the Penn Twp. food drive- totally seperate! Please don't taint this good deed with your erroneous comments.

I think HM is commenting on the wrong story. What does Penn Twp. have to do with the Elkhart YMCA? Besides, how are charges going to result if the food collected from there isn't turned over?

Give it a rest HM. you can shove your bureaucracy. This food is to feed the poor, not your ego.

Any food collected from Penn Twp. residents needs to be turned over to Mike Hayes for Penn Twp. distribution. Failure to do so will result in charges.
