South Bend police are on the scene of yet another shooting. This is the eighth shooting in one week. This time, officials find themselves investigating Johnson Street near Linden Avenue.

Police say a man was shot and killed just before 11 a.m. Sunday. Officials say 32-year-old Quest Jackson was near a sidewalk on Johnson when the suspect drove by firing several rounds and then drove off down Linden.

Jackson was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit arrested 30-year-old Dakevee Wiggins in connection with the shooting.

The county prosecutor’s office is reviewing the case to see what Wiggins will be charged with.

Since last Sunday, this is the third fatal shooting and forth fatal crime when considering a recent stabbing. Those incidents are in addition to five other shootings that did not result in death.

I wanted to find out about the man who was in the military at one time and is now on food stamps and working - housecleaning or whatever he was doing. Did you have that on your news? If so I wanted to see about blessing him with a dinner.

Ridiculous! I am a black man disgusted, ashamed and saddened with all the shootings and carrying on in the black community. I get so tired of hearing people complaining of racial oppression and racism when its not a legit reason and then go out and sell dope and kill their own people. You tell me who is being racist with 90% black on black crime!! The bigoted Klan and hate groups are sitting back tickled pink as they watch the news of another black on black crime. You might as well join up with them because you're doing their job. I work in a profession where I try to steer young black youths toward a positive life and it just seems hopeless sometimes because the parents are not involved. I'm not sugar coating anything in this matter. They say black people act like animals sometimes and we prove them right when bull@#! like this goes on. Wake up! If you have kids take control of them and keep them out of the streets before they end up in toe tag central.

To Ronnie: I think it is a shame that two teenagers... oh lets be real, "two children" are going to be parents. Just what society needs. The odds these two stay married till death do they part is incredibly slim. Are they even getting married? Finishing high school? Going to college? Two lives totally taking a left hand turn because two children could not keep their britches on. I also think this unborn child (any child) deserves a better start than children for parents. Things may turn out different, but lets be real. This has eventually going on welfare, medicaid, food stamps, section eight, etc. written all over it. Good luck in training your son to be a father because you are both going to need it.

To Gary Resident: South Bend and Gary are about the same size, so it's easy to compare them at the FBI's crime statistics website. South Bend had roughly 150 more violent crimes (although far fewer murders) and about 2000 more property crimes than Gary in 2007. South Bend sucks, don't let anybody tell you any different.

What is the Juvenile Justice Center doing with these young adults that are responsible for alot of these "CRIMES?" We as tax payers need to be concerned about this issue. It seems like the JJC is a COVER UP?? They need to have some SERIOUS programs for juveniles. Scared Straight Programs, go and visit Michigan City prison, view Autopsies, all while on Probation making it MANDATORY.....

Seriously, we need to stop blaming the politicians. It's not about guncontrol or politics, it's about personal responsibility. Quit being afraid of your neighbors and help each other. Help yourselves, for pete's sake. If you are watching out for one another, mentoring young people, reaching out to adults who need help, maybe... just maybe, things will change. We made it happen where I grew up, neighbors came together to clean up neighborhoods, not expecting to be paid for it- we rebuilt rundown homes and fed each other when someone lacked the basics. Five solid blocks of a town were revitalized and saved, and it is now safe to walk alone on those streets. Take charge, don't blame the mayor. You each have it in you to change things.

Ronnie - I don't want to hear about how this world is moving rapidly in the wrong direction. I have a son 23 years old in a serious relationship. He is not a father he has learned to be responsible and that started at home with his father and I. Your son at 16 is not ready to have a child I am sure. Is he going to live off welfare and let us pay for his mistake? More than likely yes. Get off your butts get a job and be responsible like the rest of us. I am sick and tired of paying for ignorant people. No one has ever handed me or my family anything we work hard for what we have. We as parents are to teach our children and as we can all see there sure are a lot of stupid parents out there that don't give a dam what their kids do. I think the next President should BAN Welfare all together and make these people get out and work like the rest of us. And you wonder why you are called low lives....

South Bend is a violent city. Most of SBPD live outside of South Bend. It's bcause they know what city and the schools have become. When will the mayor do his job and reorganize the police department. When will the media ask the mayor what he has been doing?

Posted by: ThatsFunny on Nov 3, 2008 at 06:08 PM
I laugh at you people that say the shooters and scum are the same people that support Obama. You actually think these scum take time out of their busy days full of drug dealing, pimping, getting stoned, playing video games, and general worthlessness to VOTE?? They're too busy shooting each other over a drug deal or some turf dispute. Now maybe the ones who are riding around in the electric carts at Wal-Mart on Portage, and buying all the frozen fried chicken dinners, kool-aid and blue drank may get out and vote, but not the thugs. Cut section 8 and fine the landlords that house the scum, make it not worth it to rent houses to criminals and scum and the problem will resolve itself. Stupid Republicans!

to the person who wrote it is the fault of mayor that cops sit and park their cars. Grow up! There are a lot of dead beat cops out there. Alot of them just sit at gas stations or park car to car and talk to each other. Alot who run personal errands on county time. Alot who have egotistical attitudes. These are some of the reason people loose respect for cops. Get rid of some of the resource officers in the schools and put them on the streets that would save a lot of money. yes there are some good ones left, but a lot have abused their position making the rest suffer.

it's time to change the laws of our country. the prisoners are enjoying tv and exercise at our expense. let the prisons supporut themseves by makeing the prisoners work, and work hard . the chain gangs of the past were the right idea. these people do not respect society so why should society respect them. let them expand thier own prisons, let them repair thier own toilets. have them farm and raise meat for the tables of the less fortunate who have not committed crimes.make them suffer. after all they make others suffer. why coddle them and have them live better than the rest of us? we work for a living why shouldn't they? give me a yes if you agree maybe we can change.

Again another shooting. I must agree i can not wait for these shooting to end when they finally kill eachother off. I feel if you want to be completely honest this is a black problem, involved in the black community. People would consider this racist but i ask How can the truth be racist, or any sort of discrimination against anyone i am only stating the truth. For example what ethnic race were all the shooters, and the civtims involved? And i also agree, a cop being run over by a drunk driver is also a murder, so this is more than the stated number of violent crimes recently. Seems the new age generation has some sort of appeal towards destruction. If you want my advice, RAISE YOUR CHILDREN. honestly how hard is that to understand?

Posted by: tired Location: mishawaka on Nov 3, 2008 at 12:19 PM
And they think this is not a problem, they are not affraid of jail. Because we the tax payers make it like CLUB MED. Quit with all the self help programs, cable TV and all the other nice things they have in jail and make them make BIG ROCKS INTO LITTLE ROCKS.

i'm 69 and when i was growing up nearly all of us had guns, we hunted, not men but animals for food. now i feel that i have to arm myself against theses people who would harm others. in the old days we had a building that had a boxing ring. if you had a beef with someone you'd go there and fight it out,, let's do that again.as for me i'm buying an automatic and if and when someone tries to hurt my family i'll do my best to deter them in the same way that they chose to cause harm to us. if you don't like my comments i'll meet you at the gym amd we'll duke it out.

you cant police homicides.but u can make your presence known in the beats..but when the officers are now paying for their take home cars and the department is still sending them nasty emails every month tellinkg them they are using too much gas they have no other option to park their cars in a parking lot (or heaven forbid 711) and sit..its your mayor and chief of police doing this

Posted by: Anonymous Location: South Bend on Nov 3, 2008 at 10:45 AM
Who is really to blame? None other than the shooter. The cops can't be everywhere at all times. From the looks of thing (running over a cop after you already knocked him off his cycle) there is no respect for cops. If the gun slingers are so courageous, why do they shoot and run? Stick around for the aftermath! Heaven help us all!

luecke will do nothing about crime because he needs the criminals and their largely extended "families" to keep electing he and his dem machine cronies. It all falls in line with democrat philosophy; the dems need stupid people who rely on government handouts with no motivation to better themselves - otherwise they have no agenda. Not too difficult to figure out, is it? Perhaps you have noticed there are a lot more stupid people running around these days.

This is not a result of parents being too young. This is not even the result of "The Dad Leaving The Moms" as i have heard many times. My father was a truck driver he was never around when i was young but im not out shooting everyone who looks at me wrong. This is a result of ignorance. I hear alot of "Ban Video Games, Ban Music, Ban Movies, Ban T.V" No, lets be logical. The games and movies and music and television it has nothing to do with this. What does have to do with this is the way the mass BLACK society has made itself out to be. Im not racist im simply saying, out of these 5 shootings how many of the shooters were black and how many of the victims were black? Its the entire black community that seems to be attracted towards crime and violence. What, slavery, they still mad about that? Its been over a hundred years how long does it take you to get your f##!ing act together. Look, if you see a shooting, do your american right and shoot back at these animals. An eye for an Eye.

I think there should be a break down so we can all keep track of what's been going on this past week.. My husband and I jut had a short conversation about the number of crimes.. I thought there had been 9 shootings, the news said 8. Then I realized that I got it confused with a stabbing. Then again, I could have gotten the shootings confused with stuff that happened the week before. Maybe I should move to a county where the crime stats are LESS confusing..

To Ronnnie, post 11-2 at 11:47, It appears by your lack of spelling knowledge that you are doing a great job with your kids. So you had 3 kids by 26 by the same father, now you have a 16 year old having a baby, How is he going to pay for this child. Oh that's right, the taxpayers will pay for it. That's the problem, the mindset of so many generations of welfare recipients, they all think that they are entitled to it. They are all also hoping that Obama will give them more. None of the obituaries of these punks list that they had jobs, or were a productive part of society, but most have kids that we are paying for. Yet they have time to "hang out" on the street corners, Why not look for a job, or stay in school and learn a trade. Or just learn to spell. Ignorance is bred thru ignorance. If you have no ambition you will always fail. Take care of your own, I'm tired of taking care of all the lowlife's

Wouldn't you say it's the 5th deadly crime after the police officer was run down and run over? I'm so tired of people (no animals) having no respect for other people's lives. It says, in the Bible, live by the sword, die by the sword...but these animals don't read the Bible do they? Well, maybe they do but they obviously don't PRACTICE what it says!

Okay, now I'm upset that worker at 6:24 PM said that only people that do this support Obama. A life-long Republican, I find this mudslinging beyond abhorant. Does anybody remember King Hussein, a very good ally to the US in the late 60s early 70s? Hussein is an honerable name and just because one man sullied it does not make it a red flag for terror, shootouts or any other misdeed. With all this mud, I crawled out and decided to go for Obama, just because he dosen't stoop to these tactics.

Two main problems families are not families any longer no one teaching kids how to respect another person or thing. If someone today wants something they take it whether that be a life, a car or a toy. It starts in the home it takes two parents to raise a child correctly not a mother and a sperm donor. The other problem is our lack of commitment from the elected powers to be. The mayor the police chief and the judges have no back bone. We cant stop and frisk that is against the constitution. We can not put the mother or dad in jail for not properly raise a child or demand they attend classes. We can't put a child in a program to teach them right from wrong and the judges are afraid to use the death penalty. In most cases the shooter knows nothing will happen to them. A multi thousand dollar crime unit is only as good as the system is and the system is broke. A teacher can not dicipline a student and most parents care less where their kids are and what they are doing.

Tricia~~ I really dont think its fair to say its becuz its all "too young" parents.. I agree there needs to be more control from the home and parents but age has nothing to do with it.. Its all about caring about ur children more than urself i had my first child at age 20 my second and 23 and 3rd at 26 and all by the same father that is a shock alone for most ppl that the same parent for all children be possible. I have raised my kids in church and with a stable home enviorment and my 16 yr old son is a daddy to be anyday now and I dont think its becuz i didnt teach him right or buy him enuff condoms. Its the way the world is today and we can only do our best. I also dont think that becuz he is a young father he will go out and kill someone or encourage his child too someday. But like i said its the world and its moving rapidly in the wrong direction. All we can do is Pray for our loved ones safty.

Just like when my neighbors garage was set on fire it took over 15 minutes for the fire dept. to respond whn they were less than two blocks away frm the main station.....

If any of you have made ignorant comments -- God forgive you for being so ignorant. But little do you know this was an incident that happened, because somebody was just as ignorant as you all and didn't use their brain. My cousin was a decent dude tried to cared for his fam at all times had much love for his mom and kids and just was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I just pray the youths in SB will stop all of this violence and think of their futures and the sadness that they make the victim's family have to endure and their family also.Think of the expense -- now we have a funeral to pay for and the shooter has to possibly pay for an atty and the justice system has to put out money for nothing. We need those funds for our kids who want to succeed!! RIP Quest you will be missed - you are loved and you will encourage us to make a difference in this community!!! STOP THE VIOLENCE DUMMIES!!!

Somebody HAS to know something about whats going on. I have a hard time believing that the police and mayors office don't have an informant that has given a tip or two about who and why is doing the shooting. I don't fault the police but they have to be given the right to bust down doors and arrest the thugs and send them off to jail...TO STAY. Or maybe the police are satisfied to let the gangs shoot it out and thin the herd. As long as it's them and not an innocent. Did you hear that word? Gangs. The punks are here and it's time the public are made aware of what has infested this town. And yes the mayor and his staff should be held to blame in the respect that they've done nothing that we know of, to weed this infestation out of the area. Don't worry about white flight Mr Mayor, it's already happening. Fix the problem and bring the good people back!!

are any of these shootings random? are the victims targeted for some reason? are any of the shootings connected?

I read about comments left suggesting it is the mayor and the police who are to blame for the violence and crime in the cities....Has anyone sat back and pondered....Where are the parents of these teens/kids and what roles are they playing in the growth and development of these children who are killing each other? It saddens me to know that there is always someone else to blame like the mayor or the local police department, how about stepping up and being a parent who disciplines there child and teaches them moral and values instead of letting kids run rampid on the streets, which leads to violence, drugs, gangs and teenage pregnancy and so on....Wake Up People!

First of the month. Welfare checks are out so there's money for fresh ammo. Stay low for about a week until the money runs out. Jim, don't worry about the option income tax, just lay all the police off. We don't need any evidently.

I felt safer when I was in Fallujah. At least there I was getting Hazardous Duty Pay.

I hate this city anymore. All these stupid low lives shooting each other. Just round them all up put them in a park or somewhere and let them shoot each other till they are all gone. This is just plain sick. We don't even feel safe anymore.

to our mayor what crime problem??

Posted by: Sam Location: In Michigan on Nov 2, 2008 at 03:07 PM
No one is safe any longer. It doesn't matter if its late night, early afternoon or morning now. Not even Sunday is sacred either it seems. I would suspect this is gang related (such as an initiation, etc) but that of course is wild speculation on my part. Whenever I leave home from now on, I WILL be loading my 9MM and carrying with me. If someone starts shooting at me, they WILL receive return fire. Sad what our area has become but I don't think we are the only community with these type of increase crimes. Just watch and see what happens AFTER this Presidential election is over. It won't be good I bet.

What does that bring the homicide toll to this year for South Bend?

Posted by: Tricia Location: south bend on Nov 2, 2008 at 02:59 PM
This is a shame why do people think this is the way to solve problems? I hope they catch these people who are doing it before they end up killing an innocent person or child in the cross fire. Is it really worth doing life in prison? Well i guess if your future dream spouse is big buba then keep on doing what you're doing. Kids need parents to teach them better Now days the parents are too young and they dont teach the kids they just turn them loose and they act like this. We need mandatory birth control for kids under 21 this will stop alot of this!!!

Time to leave South Bend! It is becoming a battleground for murderers with guns and knives.

I think the city should hurry up and pass the option income tax so they can give us more reason to stay in the city of South Bend.
