Early Sunday morning, police collected gun casings for evidence at a Marathon station on Ironwood Drive and Mishawaka Avenue, where shards of glass littered the pavement.

Later that morning, police cars surrounded an empty vehicle driven by 21-year-old Bradley Walls before his death. Walls was shot on Main Street, then drove his car down LaSalle Avenue and crashed into a pole on the intersection of LaSalle and LaFayette Blvd., according to Metro Homicide. He was pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital.

"We've had too many shootings,” said John Pullman from his car at the Marathon station. “It scares me."

It’s too early to know whether any of the shootings are connected, according to Metro Homicide.

The five shootings on Sunday morning are as follows:

At Taco Bell, police say a man was shot during a large fight and went to a hospital.

Then, at a Marathon Gas station on Ironwood Drive and Mishawaka Avenue, two people are shot. Police said they went to the hospital without help from an ambulance.

Another shooting outside of Kelly’s Pub around 3 a.m.; a male later went to the hospital, saying he was there.

The next shooting left Bradley Wells dead.

The fifth shooting Sunday morning was reported by a man who called in and said he’d been shot while walking on College Street, north of Lincoln Way West.

Did you know that there are more murders committed in New York City than South Bend? New York City has a 80 times greater population than South Bend and half, YES HALF, as many murders as South Bend. That is ridiculous. The South Bend Police force is an abomination against law enforcement. http://newyork.areaconnect.com/crime/compare.htm?c1=New York &s1=NY&c2=South Bend&s2=IN

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 28, 2009 at 02:34 AM
I agree, South Bend is messed up. Why do the police harass college students instead of dealing with shootings and murder? While anonymous (you didnt leave a name and neither will I) does have a point, I believe that there ought to be priorities in the legal enforcement. If you don't wear a seatbelt or speed, how many people do you actually kill? And for the people that are killed, isn't it the people not wearing seatbelts or speeding. Guns kill innocent people. WAKE UP SOUTH BEND! YOUR POLICE FORCE IS INEPT AND INCOMPETENT! You say crime happens; crime doesn't happen like it does here. South Bend has a very high crime rate, the double the crime rate of other large cities using Yonkers, NY for comparision. Get real. The real world is not like South Bend, Indiana. South Bend, Indiana is a messed up city.

As long as innocent people aren't being shot, let these people keep shooting each other. I'm over the crime in this city, it's just ridiculous. It's not just this city, it's our Country. How about adopt stricter laws. Remember the kid in Turkey that was cained for vandalism....his US parents cried about it, but I bet he wouldn't do it again!

Shellene...can you read. Or do you just read what YOU want to read, then interpet it in a way that YOU really feel. hmmm...READ it again, very, very, very slowly...ok.

LONG LIVE THE BILL OF RIGHTS! Baldwin for President!

Posted by: Shellene Location: lansing on Oct 30, 2008 at 03:58 PM
If you are realy being "honest" then your are just plain stupid to think that the only people out at 3 am are people looking to be killed. That is just a crazy way of thinking.

Posted by: HonestOneReally on Oct 30, 2008 at 03:15 PM
Only fools, idiots, drunks, druggies, looking for trouble folks, are out at 3a.m If your not shopping at Walmart, Kroger or Meijer making a diaper run, than why are you out in the streets. Dont you know here in South Bend, and yeah, its creepin to Mishawaka too.. YOU are going to eventually get shot. OH, unless its a ND weekend..when being a drunk is okay. Cindy cindy....waddup

Posted by: m4 on Oct 30, 2008 at 07:02 AM
instead of complaining everyone needs to buy a handgun and get their CHL. most of you are just drawing attention to the fact that we have a security problem but wont do anything about it. get a gun, get ur carry license, shoot a bad guy if they try to use violence against you, your family or other innocent people. grow up and take some responsibility...quit relying on the government to do everything for you.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 29, 2008 at 08:05 PM
Your measley .02 a month that actually goes towards the officers does nothing. If you did not work it would not matter at all... to anyone. Officers can not stand on every corner of the whole city and stand guard I am sorry but that is impossible. If so then why have prisons or laws at that since no crime would happen if it was "your way". Get with reality and quit being so bitter. You sound really sad. Speeding is illegal and so is not wearing a seat belt so quit crying about it. If someone died in a wreck because of lack of a seat belt you are the type that would be blaming officers for not making sure everyone wears one. Suck it up. I am sorry the world isn't fairies and magical kingdoms. Crime happens and it is not even reasonable to say the SBPD should prevent it. I mean listen how stupid that really sounds. It is laughable to even expect all crime and shootings to be prevented. Wow...

Hey , ANONYMOUS, How does expecting people that MY TAXES SUPPORT("public servents, to serve and protect") to do what they are paid to do make me pathetic? If I am paying someone to do a job, I expect it to be done to my satisfaction and properly. Police wasting money and time chasing speeders/seat belt violaters is a slap in the face to every hard working citizen, ESPECIALLY when the crime rate in South Bend rivals that of Gary!! I don't care if the gangsters kill each other, but I do care about innocents that might be in the way getting hurt! You'll be crying a different song when your buddy Obama gets elected president and you see what a globalist he is. Don't expect ME to save your sorry @$$!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 29, 2008 at 03:08 PM
Aww look how bitter and pathetic Timmy is. How sad it must be to live life how you do. You will also die so bitter and ignorant.

I am so disgusted by the comments left on here. This is a time to support the people that are left devestated over the loss of someone they love. I can't believe that people are so careless, hurtful and disrespectful when someone was murdered. This isn't funny, and isn't a video game that can be restarted. A person was murdered and all you guys do is assume the worst about someone you don't know - what makes you better than the "scum" you keep saying "got what he deserved"? Innocent people were shot, an innocent man was killed, and many other innocent people are hurt from this situation. And with attitudes like this, how are you surprised society has turned out like this in the first place? Please remember your comments the next time a loved one of YOURS is gone, and hope people don't respond to you the same.

this young man was my son's friend and no matter what type of life this young man lived is no one's business and he is some ones son friend brother and no matter what there is a life that was lost so people should keep there comments to themselves! my prayers and heart goes out to the family and no matter what i feel for you as a parent. and grieve your loss with u!!!!

Posted by: Jodi Location: Michigan on Oct 29, 2008 at 07:56 AM
To Bradley Walls family and friends, I am sorry for your loss, and pray for you to have the strength to get through this tragic time. No parent should have to bury their child, and every child deserves to grow up with both parents. To all the insensitive, judgemental people just throwing comments on here off the top of your heads - how about waiting until you get the full story before deciding the value of a human life? All of this is senseless - the shootings, the loss of a young man with a whole life of potential ahead of him, and now people throwing the cruelest and unneccessary comments on here, which you wouldn't be so open if you weren't behind the safety of your computer. Just remember, it could just as easily have been you or me out on a Saturday night, and what you'd want your family to be reading while going through this. And to Bradley's killer - enjoy prison, you will get caught, and when you do, I hope the other inmates enjoy you when you're not so safe behind a gun

Posted by: Timmy Location: South Bend on Oct 28, 2008 at 09:35 PM
If the South Bend police can't handle all the shootings, maybe the state cops should join in to help make the city safe...the state cops always seem to have plenty of time to cruise the bypass and 31 trying to find speeders to ticket. Oh and god forbid if you don't wear a @#$%! seat belt. Good for nothing nazi storm troopers!!!! If you want to be safe in South Bend, stay home and keep a loaded gun handy! If the cops DO show up when you need them, you might already be dead!! So Lickey wants to lay some cops off or eliminate their positions, big deal! It isn't like they are making the city so safe as it is. If I didn't do the work I was hired for, I'd be out of a job too!

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 28, 2008 at 08:48 PM
I sooo agree with Kristen. It is so funny to hear all these people talk down. Like the officers can stand guard at every street and corner to prevent shootings... umm no. If so no crime would ever happen. And these cop haters would most definately call 911 asap if they had a problem. And who cares about underage dorky students getting busted. It is illegal to drink under 21!!! Deal with it or leave the country! Excise is who is mainly in charge of it. And good! Those underagers have even less common sense when they drink. Who cares if SBPD busts a party and then has more cars or Excise come. It is illegal and you all know it is.

Unfortunatly I only met Bradley a few times, but those few times showed me that he was a good kid, with a kind heart. Equally as unfortunate he now leaves behind people that cared so much about him. Ron, no one make the right decision 100% of the time, God knows that I haven't. You are right, this one act of sensless violence has effected so many lives..... My thoughts and prayes are with you!

I happen to know this young mans father and can tell you he was from very good people. It is such a shame that he has suffered such a loss and all people can come up with are nasty remarks. My heart goes out to you, Ron.

Posted by: Larry Location: SB on Oct 28, 2008 at 10:26 AM
John & Mitch obviously don't have a solution. The shootings happened EARLY Sunday morning..between 2am and 6am not around GAME TIME. In addition NOTRE DAME pays these Officers who are OFF-DUTY. It's a 2nd job they have to make ends meet. If you don't like it TOUGH. That's the way it is and has been for at least the past 40 years I've been around.

Is this still going on, look. We arn't in canada, we arn't bannign hand guns let me remind people of our constitutional right to bare arms. We have scum killing scum. Let the streets clean themselve,s i say if a bunch of no life people want to go around shooting and killing eachother why stop em. I will be enraged when an innocent person is injured, i will reactin my own way when an innocent person is murdere,d but for this case thank the gods no innocent person was hurt. A scum got killed by another scum, hopefully tomorrow, today, tonight, more scum will die. We can only pray

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Mishawaka on Oct 28, 2008 at 09:52 AM
I think you people should be ashamed of yourselves. If you didn't know this child how can you judge. This is someone's son, someone's brother. If this were your child how would you feel reading all this crap that people who don't even know your child are writing. To Bradley's father my heart goes out to you and your family. NO ONE deserves to loose a child, under any circumstance. My thoughts, and prayers go out to your family.

Posted by: Anon on Oct 28, 2008 at 08:53 AM
To Ron Walls, First I am sorry for your loss. You are right, a parents should never have to bury a child, but HE made the decision to live the life he lived. He wasn't innocent, but a gang banger and you need to face that reality. De chose to live by the sword and then died by the sword. I couldn't care less that he died the way he died, it's no one's fault but his and the shooter's. I hope the thugs involved are caught and punished fully, but with a lack of cooperation from people, what do you expect?

Posted by: Amber Location: South bend on Oct 28, 2008 at 08:25 AM
i live right near there and kinda got scared. The one im most worried about is the one that might of happened at Kelly's Pub he is my uncle and i haven't talk to him but i think this all should stop with all of the shootings! I just want everyone to be safe i just want the world to go back with no volience.......

"People in canada are subjects with no constitutional rights. People here are freemen." ------ Just not "free" to go to certain parts of town.

Posted by: Ron Walls Location: Lansing Michigan on Oct 28, 2008 at 01:05 AM
Well everyone I am Bradleys' father. This is a shame what happend to my son. No father should have to burry his son. I have read most of the comments left on here, some of them are totally no needed comments. first of all, my son was not "scum"! He was a young man, sure he has not always made the right decisions in life, but who has 100% of the time. But my son should not have died this way. He has 2 children that will not know their dad now because of some person with a gun! Im not asking for any revenge, but all this killing has to stop! Now 2 lives will be destroyed, my son, and the shooter will go to prison for a VERY long time, if not "life". Bradley...my 1st son...R.I.P. I LOVE YOU! I will look out for your two kids!

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 27, 2008 at 09:27 PM
I feel for the family of Bradley! This makes you go home and kiss your children regardless if there 3 or 30. No one can ever perpare for the loss of a child. My prayers are with you.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 27, 2008 at 09:25 PM
Why do people have to resort to shooting? Be a bigger person and walk away. Killing someone doesn't solve the problem, it creates more problems. Why spend the rest of your life in prison? Is it worth it in the end.

AMEN KRISTEN! And I agree with what the others said... Mayor Lick Me is doing an awful job.

It's funny everyone wants to bad talk to cops... but the minute those people need something, the police are the first people you call.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 27, 2008 at 03:58 PM
Oh to live in this 21st century city! When is Mayor Luecke going back to Europe with his wife for their personal safety? Mayor Luecke and his partners need to stop importing crime into this once good community. Maybe the Mayor and his partners are planning to run everyone out of town. Land will then become very cheap, then they will start a police crack down and profit royally. Just a thought.

Posted by: Tim Location: South Bend on Oct 27, 2008 at 03:58 PM
Right, it was Excise, not SBPD as I was listening to them on the SAFE-T system. SBPD can't babysit a bunch of murdering thieves 24/7. Listen to the scanner they're fighting all over the place with sticks, bats, knives and you name it. When people act animals things like these happen.

Posted by: scum Location: south bend on Oct 27, 2008 at 03:45 PM
let the scum and animals kill themselves. thank god it appears no innocent bystanders were killed. only trash. my hard earned tax dollars dont have to pay for his welfare anymore.

I don't know what to do - but this is all so very sad for South Bend. "Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our souls when we look the other way" - Martin Luther King

Posted by: Debra Location: South Bend on Oct 27, 2008 at 02:24 PM
Heather, My husband and I both own guns. We are in our 40's and feel personal protection is our right. Why take that away from the "sane" people. Something to think about........

Posted by: wangen on Oct 27, 2008 at 02:21 PM
good idea heather, BAN THE GUNS. hey, there was a stabbing too.....lets ban the knifes too. they can sell steak that is pre cut by authorized knife users. are knifes legal in canada?

Posted by: Angelina Location: Around on Oct 27, 2008 at 01:58 PM
Mitch - put down the beer, go back to school, and learn how to spell "amok"

Posted by: dave Location: south bend on Oct 27, 2008 at 01:43 PM
Once again, SBPD was NOT involved in the underage drinking party where daddy's little girl got busted. Complain to ISP / Excise Police (an extension of the State Police) We at SBPD obviously have better things to be working on. We were NOT there!

Posted by: Anarchology Location: South Bend on Oct 27, 2008 at 01:42 PM
And to come to an end of this, If you wish to try and steer me as wrong in any way, or judgmental, remember this. There is truth in these streets something i found out very easily. I opened my ears after reading this story, and found out what had happened, and have basically narrowed down the shooter who,as i earlier mentioned is a Wild Boy, a south bend made gang of a bunch of scum who feel that a gang is something to be proud of. Talk found around clay high school, washington, even saint joe is speaking of this. Outside that, the portage liquor store has people talking, the martins near that, the myers on portage. Yes, i learned your story, And to the "ANONYMOUS" Coward who wants to contradict my words and crucify me for speaking truth, How much do you have to say on yourself, when a complete stranger to you and your family i might add, knows more of what happened to your cousin than you do..Irony, no, i guess we see why this child was bad, his family doesn't care. Shame Shame.

Posted by: Hey heather on Oct 27, 2008 at 01:34 PM
People in canada are subjects with no constitutional rights. People here are freemen. Stay up there where you are "safe."

Posted by: Anarchology Location: South Bend on Oct 27, 2008 at 01:22 PM
Rebuttal..Yes yes of course of course im such a hypocrite i don't know anything. Oh my lovies i do know exactly what happened that night and i also know who shot the boy, claiming an idiotic gang such as Wild Boys. Making an emergency run was it? No no lovie, your "COUSIN" was at a local party for scum such as himself when a fight tapered off. He ran his mouth around some more ignorant scum which led to a string of shootings from of course the Wild Boys. Your COUSIN wasnt an accidental victim lovie no he was aimed for, he was hunted and he was killed. He was an ignorant piece of filth on this ever so gracious land of ours and let me remark on this saying in full he got what he got for the life he chose to live. Yes i enjoy watching filth clean the streets for us, Yes i wouldnt mind having a bucket of popcorn while watching either. Do I judge, no, i remark. A remark is merely an asked for comment. Judge not thee for you will only be playing a devil.

Posted by: john Location: South Bend on Oct 27, 2008 at 12:50 PM
Mitch's comment is perfect (8:47 am). 5 shootings and 1 stabbing this weekend and what is the police priority next weekend? TAILGATE PARTIES!! Why not spend some of the money used to hassle students on real crime and really help our community. I guess it's easier to arrest a student holding a beer bottle than a thug with a gun. Also South Bend citizens tax dollars help pay for county and state police. Shouldn't they be patroling the high crime areas also and helping the SB police reduce crimes in our city?

Posted by: Willie Location: Niles on Oct 27, 2008 at 12:44 PM
That's a good idea, Heather - ban handguns, and then criminals won't get them, have them, or use them. Makes perfect sense, because criminals are always willing to obey gun laws.....

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 27, 2008 at 12:28 PM
it will soon be snowy, and the animals will stay indoors.

Posted by: Resident Location: River Park on Oct 27, 2008 at 12:26 PM
It is scary when violence starts to occur in a section of town that River Park residents are not use to. Jobs are not available in this city and Mayor Lueke your love of hotels does not create living wage jobs either. Violence will be up and will eventually get worse and I don't think living in the best of places in town will make a difference.

Posted by: Amy Location: Mishawaka on Oct 27, 2008 at 12:26 PM
We need to pray for the city of South Bend and Mishawaka. We live in a terrible time right now and only seems to get worse. Whether you move somewhere else I think every city has its crime rates and there is no running from it. Gary is not even on the top 10 list for dangerous cities so why compare to them? If its that bad in South Bend, South Bend does not even rank on the 20 top list either. My point is, is that we need to have laws that mean something to our community and to keep trying. Never give up.....we can make a difference if we try.

Posted by: Alan Location: Elkhart on Oct 27, 2008 at 12:21 PM
You would think since it is getting colder some of this violence might taper off. What are the Gary and Chicago connections of the individuals involved in these crimes? Any of these individuals on welfare or section eight? Have kids with multiple mothers that are on welfare? Previous convictions? I'm guessing yes to all of the above.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: MI on Oct 27, 2008 at 12:20 PM
And the New York Post dissed Elkhart! Maybe they should look at South Bend! I'm affraid to go anywhere in South Bend for fear of getting killed!

Posted by: eh Location: mi on Oct 27, 2008 at 12:19 PM
heather, banning handguns will NOT solve these kind of crimes. i can assure you that the criminals involved in this story who had a handgun had it illegaly in the first place.

Posted by: Unknown Location: STL on Oct 27, 2008 at 10:48 AM
It is so funny to read all of ignorant remarks some of you have to say! That "criminal, idiotic scum" who of which ones wants to sit back and eat popcorn and watch die, was my cousin! How dare you even speak the words, especially while jumping to conclusions! You all have no clue as to what happened that night nor to him, you just read and judge just based on what the media tells you! You are the idiot, Mr. Anarchology! Being in the wrong place and at the wrong time cost him his life, which keep in mind can happen to anyone of us! What if you had to make a emergency run that morning, in that area with you family and happen to have caught a bullet that nigh as well! What if? Should we belive you if you say you didn't see anyone and don't know anything, or better yet was it retaliation for you doing something in your past, like opening you mouth vs. walkling away because it seems like you are the type to do that a lot! Kharma.....

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Oct 27, 2008 at 10:29 AM
Why stop it? Because innocent people will wind up getting hurt too. Also, violence breeds more violence. I don't know about you, but I don't want to live in the Thunderdome.

Posted by: Chris Location: South Bend on Oct 27, 2008 at 10:25 AM
There are just too many guns available. There's always going to be stupid people, but allowing them to have access to guns just doesn't make sense. How much is this going to cost the city?

Posted by: OMG Location: SB on Oct 27, 2008 at 10:01 AM
If you think things are bad now wait until after the election. No matter who wins there's going to be trouble. Unfortunately police can only do so much to try to keep crime down. Sad thing is our cops are paid minimal for what crud they have to put up with and possible put their lives on the line. Oh but wait - our mayor will fix that - he's going to let some go. Crime is going to increase with our economy failing. I still think that if we could get drugs off the streets our crime would decrease. Guess there is no win - win solution.

Posted by: Heather Location: Canada on Oct 27, 2008 at 09:59 AM
maybe it's time to ban hand guns in the United States. I grew up in South Bend and now I live in Canada and in the 4 years I've lived here, there has only been one random shooting. Something to think about!

Posted by: Anarchology Location: south bend on Oct 27, 2008 at 09:58 AM
Question..Why stop it. Let me remark on this paradox of wanting to stop filth from killing filth. I say if ignorant people want to go around shooting and killing eachother than hand me a bowl of popcorn and let me enjoy it. I love stories like this, why, 1 dead! woo, one more criminal, idiotic scum off the streets for me to worry about. One less person to overwhelm the prison systems. One less person to endanger the lives of my fianca and me. Now i can feel a whole lot safer walking down the streets with my girls hand in mine knowing one more ignorant scum is dead. I say we promote these shooting, let them clean the streets for us.

Posted by: Nothing good happens after midnight on Oct 27, 2008 at 09:49 AM
It's obvious that there is nothing the city or community can do to stop this abomination... It's just too bad these guys aren't better shots, maybe then it could be a self clean up type deal.

Posted by: Mitch Location: McGee on Oct 27, 2008 at 09:47 AM
At least they're cracking down on those pesky underage tailgaters running a muck. Thank goodness South Bend and the state police are keeping those parking lots safe from inebriated college students. Sounds like they've got they're priorities straight!

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Oct 27, 2008 at 09:01 AM
Stupid people will do stupid things. That's not news and unfortunately there's not a lot the cops can do about that. One of these shooting was 2 block from my house in River Park which generally is a pretty quiet part of town. I honestly don't know what I expect the police to do. They certainly can't be everywhere. They can't stop every argument. They can't stop every retaliation. What I do want the prosecutor to start doing though is hold people until they start snitching. If you're a material witness to a crime, have information that the cops need to solve it and arrest the person, you'd better cough up the info. You're just as much a part of the problem as the guilty person. But that's the prosecutor and the judge. Not the cops. I would like the cops pulling more people over for traffic violations though. Checking and arresting people for outstanding warrants would be a nice place to start. Fewer criminals on the street will result in less crime.

It's a shame our commuinity's good name and reputation is dragged down by these animals that roam the streets between midnight and 4a.m. every weekend. Nothing good happens between those times, so I suggest law abiding citizens stay off the streets at those times, and let these degenerate animals wipe each other out. They don't contribute to society in any way besides being a burden, and we're left to pay the bill. (Extra police, insurance claims, welfare). Whether these shootings are related or not doesn't matter. Even if caught these scum will be back on the streets looking for revenge soon enough. Let em wipe each other out.

Dump the Hall of Shame (Sell it to Joe Kernan)and fund the police department as it should be. Use the tiff funds like Plymouth did to hire more police
