It's our top story, but to many in Elkhart County, it may be no surprise.

The most recent numbers show unemployment rates in Elkhart County have more than doubled in the last year, and are among the highest in the state.

Elkhart County’s unemployment rate of 9.3% for September 2008 is second in the state only to Fayette County; which is significantly smaller than Elkhart County.

While the root of the problem is no secret, it's still astonishing how much the rates have changed in just a year.

If you look at the numbers in our area from this time last year, unemployment rates hovered around 4%: healthy scores.

“It’s considered by some people to be full employment. Pretty much anyone who wants a job has one. Then when you have some major layoffs in your community you suddenly double that,” said Kyle Hannon with the Elkhart County Chamber of Commerce.

That's what happened. The rates reported this month are astronomically higher than last year; Elkhart County’s has risen from 4.2% to 9.3%.

“I mean the situation hasn’t taken anyone by surprise. The numbers come out monthly and that reminds everyone that, hey, here’s a number to tell you that things are tough. Well, we know things are tough,” Hannon said.

Months of layoffs and closings of RV plants and the businesses that supply them, had the unemployment line at Elkhart’s WorkOne office at about 2 hours long Wednesday morning.

“That trickles down into are they able to go into restaurants are they able to buy things at the store; it's felt by the whole community,” Hannon said.

That impact has already started in some places.

“Yea I had to cut back hours yesterday and I’ll probably have to cut more next week,” said Gayle Glaser, the Owner of Shortstop Inn in Wakarusa.

Glaser’s restaurant would have been swamped at lunch this time last year, with workers from Monaco coach just down the street. Wednesday, it was nearly empty.

They quickly saw a nearly 50% drop in business.

“It's scary because you still have your taxes, your insurance, and all your bills. So it’s just back to working long hours and trying to survive. That’s all you can do,” Glaser said.

That's the hope: that Elkhart County businesses can hang on.

“At times we were one of the strongest economies in the state; right now we're one of the most challenged. But you know we'll meet challenges, we'll take care of it,” Hannon said.

The chamber of commerce says they are encouraged by falling gas prices; they take that as a sign that the RV industry could have new life sometime in the future.

But they also realize they need to look to new types of industry, to diversify the area.

Meanwhile, if you search unemployment rates based on cities and towns, Elkhart and Goshen have the two highest unemployment rates in September 2008 among cities in the state with a population of more than 25,000 people.

Unemployment rates are high and expect them to climb. Thanks to Obama voters, expect it to get worse. Businessess will be taxed to the limit in a tight economy which will cause more companies to tighten purse strings and reduce their work forces in an attempt to make the bottom line look better for investors and owners. I hope I am wrong, but not encouraged by what I see.

For the guy who's rich and feel's people on unemployment are only on it because we're lazy and don't want to work,Hopefully you never end up where I am!!!!!!!!!!

When Gayle, owner of Shortstop, was doing good for herself, she still never cared about her customers, she was very disrespectful to them. So I give no pity for her and her business. I do feel bad for her workers that are going to have their hours cut back, and possibly laid off, as they gave respect to her customers!

It is very said that people like "joe the plumber" and "mr. notre dame" are like that. It is very obvious that they are not rich because of their illiteracy. I worked with many hard working people at Monaco, they really were devoted to their job, yes they were paid good but not when they were placed on 4 day work weeks since the beginning of the year. The need for this BS bailout is outrageous, because of big executives are taking advantage of the hard working tax payers money. Monaco executives like Kay Toolson and John Nepute don't have to worry because they set up a "golden parachute" for themselves. That is the reason why this country is falling into a depression. I agree that both top presidential candidates are worthless and we need someone like Ron Paul in office to help the american economy.

ICE needs to come make some illegal immigrant raids. This would free up jobs for honest, legal, tax paying American citizens.

The same thing has happened since the beginning of the industrial revolution. We'll get through this, because we're AMERICANS. That's Ameri-can, not Ameri-can't.

Ok Mr. Notre Dame it is nice to see you are doing good... There are going to be alot of people look for the things you buy and have laying around your house... The only other thing you could do is give everyone some more information like you address, work hours.. You want to talk the talk lets see how long you keep your riches!!!!!!

After checking the workforce development website, one finds the Mike Yoder's "Economic driving force of Michiana" has a lower median wage, a lower mean(average) wage,AND a higher rate of unemployment than the Gary region. Wonder why Saint Joseph County wanted to join the west.

The reason why unemployment is so high is that those working in the RV industry are not qualified to do any jobs that would pay the same wage. There are plenty of jobs out there just not jobs that would afford the RV workers to maintain their life style. They have been living outside of their means for year in the fact that their skill set did not fit the wage. Why would someone pay 60 - 100K when I can send the jobs to mexico for a tenth of the price (which is what they should do) as it would increase their profit margins and make RV more affordable as they would be able to sell them at a lower price and therefor sell more.

I can't belive my eyes! You people who are bashing the unemployment people are stupid and unlearned! Do you actually think they woke up that morning and said "gee I think I'm going shut down my company today so that 400 or more employees have to go to the unemployment center? The reason why there are so many without jobs is because there are so many without jobs! We've had too many major companies shut down that its causeing no jobs around he.. its first come first serve. You would be singing a differnt tune if it was you. People can't afford gas, homes, cars, and other things so this is slowing down our economy. Wake up people and stop being so stupid.

For those who "don't care" and are bashing the unemployed, many of these peope WERE WORKING and have lost their jobs. They are afraid of losing what they've worked so hard for - try showing a little compassion instead of showing how immature you are in your posts. For the person who works at Notre Dame; what a way to represent your employer-especially when Notre Dame does a lot to help those in need and gives so much to the community. You should be ashamed!!

Its scary out there my job has us only working 30 to 36 hours a week it has never bein this bad. I hope something changes soon cause i would like to keep my house and continue to provide for my ten month old girl. If they could get gas to about 1.75 to 2 dollars more people would have that extra money to go get to go to the mall or spend it on extras. But i guess these oil people dont care about lower or middle class people, government people need to wake up and get there heads out of their butts.

I know what will solve it - More Stimulus Checks! That way the liberals will need to raise the taxes on businesses! Wait, could that mean businesses who are smart will just move across the border and take the jobs with them? Could it mean that obama has promised so much that is no where close to being in the constitution? Last I checked it's not a God Given Right to an education, a home, a job, health care, a nice car, etc. - could it mean people actually need to earn these things themselves and for government to keep their promises to themselves? mccain isn't a whole lot better (we Need Ron Paul), but people please stop drinking the obama kool-aide! he's a joke and can't even think for himself - he couldn't even answer Rick Warren as to when he THINKS life begins. again he can't even make up his own mind and give a straight answer - do you think he's not a puppet?

this was all done by the government by design. thanks to nafta and the fact we dont make anything in the late great u.s.a. we are not a major manufacturing country anymore and without manufacturing the economy is doomed. if you have the resources then i recommend leaving america while the getting is good if the government will let you. we are a second world nation and soon we will be a third world nation. wake up and realize america is gone. stock up on storable food and silver and of course firearms. liberty tools speak in every language known to man.

Just last week, Mayor Dick Moore complained about a New York newspaper article about Elkhart's economy being so bad. Further proof that Elkhart's leaders are asleep at the wheel.
