As we told you, six of the top ten most dangerous intersections in St. Joseph County are all in Mishawaka on the stretch of Grape road near the mall.

-Grape & Douglas
-Grape & University
-Grape & Indian Ridge
-Grape & Day
-Grape & Edison
-Grape & Edison Lakes Parkway

Police officers and the public are concerned about traffic and crashes firemen say these intersections have them worried about response time, especially during holiday shopping season.

Lieutenant Brian Linson says, “It's very difficult to get one of these big rigs around this area.

With the bumper to bumper traffic, road construction, a brand new hospital being built and six of the county's most dangerous intersections all lumped together, Linson says responding to calls from the Douglas Road fire station can be frightening.

Linton says, “It's somewhat frustrating when you're sitting at a light and you can see the black smoke and there's really nowhere to go.”

Just a few weeks ago, Linton says this happened.

He says, “Douglas Road is down to one lane both ways and it was a Friday afternoon. Usually our response time is three to five minutes and it took us quite a while and we were getting paranoid.”

Mishawaka Mayor Jeff Rea says he and other city leaders recognize the paranoia that's why their paying big bucks to fix the problem.

Rea says, “As the hospital moves up there, we'll do traffic interceptors. The fire trucks and ambulances will be able to intercept traffic. With the stop lights, we've tried interconnecting lights and timing signals so they're smarter when they need time.”

Rea says all of the road construction in this area is also part of the improvements. He says it's frustrating, but it's for safety purposes in the long term.

Rea says, “The goal is to have this all wrapped up by the Christmas season.”

In the meantime, Lieutenant Linson asks that drivers help make firefighters' jobs easier. If you hear them coming, don't stop and stare.

Linson says, “Try not to block the intersection. Stay where you are but if you're halfway through, obviously you've got to turn and then just get out of the way.”
Mayor Rea, police, and firefighters also gave some suggestions for getting through the traffic nightmare.

-turn right, not left
-north bound on Grape and south bound on Main is quicker
-pay attention
-don’t talk or text on your cell phone

Wow. A really busy intersection. After living in Manhattan for 7 years I can feel your pain, but this is not quite Times Square. Try to make due. You are only about 11,000,000 people shy of the metropolis that you are worried about becoming.

Turning right, not left across lanes of trafic is always best. You can always turn right and go around the block even it it means going out of your way, it's a whole lot safer for everyone. I hardly ever turn left, especially on Grape road. People on cell phone or trying to text someone should be fined. That's a great way to cause a serious accident. Cell phones should never have been invented. Things were fine without them.

One way going north and one way going south...since I live in the area that would be okay with me.

maybe the fire dept should do like they do in new york have big reinforced bumbers and if you get in the way sorry about your bad luck (fire engine smashs your car out of the way and you get fined and pay for any damage to the truck) people there try their hardest to get out of the way of a fire engine ,but not anything else

Hey thats not a bad idea at all making Grape and Main wide one-way streets. Kind of like how Main and Michigan work in SB. Except making Main one-way North and Grape one-way South. That would be interesting. However it would be a nightmare to pull off. Still a great idea because of the traffic.

Hey E.R. Nurse The city does not have any money to make emergency vehicle lanes becouse they have been spending all there money on the FAILED park downtown PRIORITIES !!!!

I read these blogs and laugh a little. Am I seeing thing? They just put in a right turning lane on Grape Road turning right onto Edison. However, they FORGOT to remove two telephone poles in the middle of that NEW turning lane. I wonder how long it will take them to realize they need to remove the telephone poles to make this turning lane work?

Cassie..you are exactly right. I thought the same thing and would never even consider working in the e.d. at the new hospital just because of the awful traffic. It's a mess and should have been thought of first..not last. p.s. anonymous..big cities with constant bumper to bumper traffic..well..they have these things called emergency vehicle only lanes...

Wow what would you guys do if you lived in a big city where they actually had bumper to bumper traffic all the time?

Who wants to go to St Joe anyway? The whole thought of faith based care scares me. How about SCIENCE based care? At any rate Grape grew way to fast and the city of Mishawaka is reaping the whirlwind on that one I still think that Mishawaka should annex South Bend, perhaps I could be proud of my hometown then. And as far as the move, the hospital needs to at least break even on the care they provide. Nothing wrong with following the money. Until recently thats what this country was all about. Who wants a bunch of homeless skulking about when your loved ones are sick? Until South Bend gets is act together Mishawaka and Granger will be the place to be. Southsiders, quit whining and dive the 20 minutes to Grape road, or hold your public officals accountable.

I don't see anything in Cassie's post that should elicit such negative comments from anyone. Maybe you are the ones that need to get a life if you found her comments that upsetting, you must not have much going on in your life.

Why dont we make Grape one way north and Main Street one way south? That would help traffic...then there is no waiting to turn left across traffic. That would also eliminate 50% of accidents.

This is typical of the planners of Grape rd. Think after all is said and done. As for the hospital moving there. This is happening all over the country. Non-profit hospitals are going away from cities and closer to sub-urban area's where the insured dwell. I'd like to see the commercial/shopping area's spread out more. The south side of South Bend needs more. Why congest one area to the point that you keep people away? Mishawaka has done well but it's gotten to the point that enough is enough. Me go to that area to shop? Never. Go to the hospital in an emergency. You'd die on the way.Interceptors or not. The area is full of people/traffic, who pay no attention to what they are doing.

shoul'nt have been figured out before the hospital had been built? Poor planning on the part of the planning commision.

as far as going north on grape and south on main, why doesnt the city of mishawaka make that manditory like michigan and main in south bend?

Posted by: Mish Location: Mish on Oct 18, 2008 at 07:51 AM
What about making a mirror to Main and Michigan streets in south bend. There is alot of traffic there, there are many connecting streets, and it would alleviate alot of traffic type problems by making it one way n for 1 and one way s for the other. That way when an accident does happen traffic routing would be easier and cause less congestion.

Why has it taken so long for attention to be drawn to this area? When I heard St. Joe Med was moving there I determined I wouldnt want to be in an ambulance close to death and on my way to SJRMC traveling Main or Grape on a Saturday between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Very poor planning. Now the problem has been recognized and as usual we are going to "FIX" it after the fact. More waste of money..why didn't the city planners have this vision BEFORE??? As for driving and texting well it is unsafe, distracting, and causes traffic flow delays. Drivers: Pay attention to the road, you have a lethal weapon around you!!! The Car!
