From fender benders to fatalities, there's no question driving can be dangerous and some streets require even more caution.

In Mishawaka, police say extreme caution is needed in specific areas.

In fact, seven of the county's most dangerous intersections are in the Princess City.

Police fear drivers will be doing some serious damage as the roads start to really get congested in a few weeks

Halloween is supposed to be the scariest time of year, but out on the streets police have a different answer.

Lieutenant Tim Williams says, “During holiday shopping they’re in too in much of a hurry. They're cutting across traffic which causes people to stop and this causes a rear end collision because the person behind them is not paying attention.”

Many of these rear end collisions are happening right along a stretch of Grape Road.

Mishawaka Police showed us the seven intersections in Mishawaka that are on the top ten list of most dangerous in St. Joe County.

1.) Grape Road & Douglas Road
2.) Grape Road & University Park Drive
3.) Grape Road & Indian Ridge
4.) Grape Road & Day Road
5.) Elder Road & McKinley
6.) Grape Road & Edison
10.) Grape Road & Edison Lakes Parkway

The Collins family says they’re not surprised.

Dawn Collins says, “It's always busy no matter what time of day you come out here.”

Lieutenant Williams says, “ We have more and more people using cell phones and texting while driving and just not paying attention while they're up here.”

Williams says talking and texting are the biggest car crash contributors.

Seventeen year-old Michael Collins agrees from experience with his friend.

Collins says, “He was sitting there texting with his left hand and driving with his right.”

He says that time they were lucky. Like Lt. Williams, he too is worried for what's coming around the corner.

Collins says, “It's going to get horrible during the holiday season.”
Lt. Williams says, “We want people to come up here and enjoy it, make it an enjoyable experience.”

I think when they developed SB and Mishawaka they should have made every home have a driveway so less cars are parked on the side of the street's. When the streets are lined with parked cars it makes it hard to see. By the time you have the nose of your car stuck out in the middle of the intersection it could be to late and you get hit. Where I live we hear screeching tires on a daily base. There have been a few people who have died, a truck hit so hard it ended up on its roof. That street is Division St between Jefferson and Mishawaka Ave. I just got hit by a hit and run Tuesday evening at the corner of N 26th and Wall st in River Park. If by chance anyone was in that area at about 6:50- 6:55pm and may have seen this accident Please, please call the South Bend police department and help me. I'm hoping someone saw it happen.

if you are heading to the mall. don't take grape. take fir road. less traffic

I'm just wondering WHAT the DIFFERENCE is between a drunk driver and one that is on their cell phone. They are both hazardous on the road and they both think they can drive.

put a police at each one of these intersections during rush time. They could make a fortune writing tickets for those who make a habit of running the red lights. A police car has been right beside me when 2 people ran red lights and they never moved. People are careless thinking the lights are delayed. I never go on green right away as you see way too many cars coming through on red. That's why the accident rates are so high. The law of turning "right on red" made individuals think they can ignore red all together.

I think Mark makes a valid point. There was no explanation of the method of calculation, and I'm guessing it's not by percentage, so more cars would equal more accidents. As for slamming South Bend, one need only look at how many businesses have moved out to the more business-friendly Mishawaka to know that he makes a valid point there as well.

Wildbill, this is the village calling. Dan isn't the idiot that we're missing. If you look closely #7, 8, and 9 are not listed in the story above. By the way, learn how to spell the word dumb. I seriously hope you are not a police officer that's insulting people.

Thanks WNDU for not posting 7,8, and 9. Joe it will take a study and then the common concil will visit it to see how much "intersection tax" will be needed. It will be added to your car plates. Most likely another $25.00 to 50.00 per vehicle you own. Then it will take the city 2 years to draw and re-draw new drawings. Not to mention the relocation of the geese and the bushes and trees so there will be a new "wild life and tree tax" and that will get charged to the home owners of the county at about 50.00 a 500 feet of property you own. Of course the new business will get a taxe abatement to let them not pay any taxes during the next 10 years and when they fail or just move we loose the taxes and get anice new empty building to stare at.

Buckeye and McKinley is no picnic either. Scary stuff...

Posted by: mike Location: mishawaka on Oct 18, 2008 at 12:28 AM
one thing I'd like to mention for many ignorant drivers: lincoln way is only a TWO lane road between Capital and Logan. This means ONE lane each direction. Contact Mishawaka police station to verify no dotted lines marking 4 lanes. If you get in an accident, the driver on the right is AT FAULT. Be careful!

Posted by: GK Location: Elkhart on Oct 17, 2008 at 10:33 PM
Yep grape road is making mincemeat out of cars! btw WNDU should refuse to post anything from a person using all caps....

When are people going to tire of Mishawaka and all it's headaches? Grape and Main are what is wrong with America. Shop til you drop and then figure how to pay. Those two roads should be called credit and debt ave.

Posted by: wildbill Location: patrol car on Oct 17, 2008 at 06:47 PM
Dan, the village you live in called and they want their idiot back. The intersections are listed in the article if you would only take the time to read it before making a dumd comment.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 17, 2008 at 04:48 PM
The first line of this article seems to sensationalize the story with "From fender benders to fatalities". The stats list accidents, but where are the most fatalities. Most of these accidents are probably with little damage. Where are the really dangerous ones?

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 17, 2008 at 04:37 PM
Text messaging, cell phones, itiots that want to make a left turn out or into business, when all they have to do is go a half block and come out with a light. Idiots that stop to let someone make a left turn out also cause accidents. I had a friend who was involed in one on Grape. Somebody was making a left out of Lowe's, and someone stopped to let them turn out, and my friend was in the left lane, and creamed the guy. Whose fault, the nut trying to turn left on grape or the nut the stopped to let him out. People you can save gas, if you do not try to make left turns into anything on Grape road. Plan your trip so you can make right turns in.

Posted by: joe on Oct 17, 2008 at 04:35 PM
so what are they going to do about it?

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 17, 2008 at 04:35 PM
Try driving an ambulance thru there!

I've often wondered when people are going to tire of the over kill that is Mishawaka. I rarely go there and am somewhat satisfied with the small bit of stores that have crept into the south side of South Bend. There was little if any thought put into that area of Mishawaka when the building rush came. I outa know I lived out there for 26 years. Am I glad to not live in Mishawaka?? YES!

to dan the top 10 are in the article above

Posted by: Stephanie Location: Elkhart on Oct 17, 2008 at 01:53 PM
Grape road is very bad during the holiday season. But has anyone ever considered the fact that maybe Elkhart has bad intersections too?

Posted by: Marcia Location: granger on Oct 17, 2008 at 01:35 PM
Anybody ever notice how many cars go through red lights?

Posted by: sofia romani Location: south bend on Oct 17, 2008 at 01:31 PM
31S and Roosevelt Rd is also bad. There's been many rear ending accident. Cars trying to make a left hand turn on Roosevelt and drivers following aren't paying attention and rear them. Right now it's under construction, so hopefully that will lessen the amount of collisions.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 17, 2008 at 01:17 PM
I really feel that they should prohibit left turns in and out of some driveways. For example Lowes onto grape. There is another way in and out of there, using a traffic light. This not only lessons the chance of an accident, cutting across two lanes of traffic, but says on gas. Another one is the Kolh's shopping center. Again there is another exit out, using a traffic light. We also plan our trips when we can make only right turn in and rights out. If we need to go left as to head home, we use an exit that gets us to a traffic light. Another intersetion I wish they would be the south bound lane at grape and Mckinnly. Someone is always passing us on the right, then cuts us off when the lane narrows, to slam on their brakes to make a left turn by the oil change place. The right lane should be a right turn only lane.

Posted by: HonestOne on Oct 17, 2008 at 12:56 PM
People can't drive!!! PERIOD. Dont obey traffic signals, dont slow down, won't ever stop talking on cell phones, never turn down the music, the list of distractions is endless. Keep ignoring the rules of the road, and you will be remembered by faded flowers on the corner where you die. Police can only pull over one car at a time..IF they arent speeding themselves, or turning on their lights to go thru a red light. Combine that with taking up every piece of land with another place to eat...Well, folks gotta have that dinner out, or go shopping and have a drink at one of the new bars, and will kill themselves or someone else to get it.

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 17, 2008 at 12:18 PM
grape is dangerous because of people coming to a near stop to turn into a parking lot and get rear ended. need more turn off lanes.

Posted by: Yogi Berra on Oct 17, 2008 at 12:04 PM
Grape Road? Nobody goes there anymore. It's too busy.

Posted by: Dan Location: Not South Bend on Oct 17, 2008 at 11:38 AM
So what were other intersections? This information would be helpful.

Posted by: David Smith Location: South Bend, IN on Oct 17, 2008 at 11:38 AM
Gee Mishawaka Police guess you have your work cut out for you. Maybe you should petrol Grape more carefully!

Posted by: tom Location: south bend on Oct 17, 2008 at 11:34 AM
I cant help but wonder if you get your news story from differnt areas, i have noticed a trend with your news and other markets

Posted by: Amy Location: South Bend on Oct 17, 2008 at 11:22 AM
I don't know why some people have to slam South Bend every chance they get. This article had nothing to do with South Bend and people leaving South Bend but we still have to have a remark from some idiot like Mark. Suth Bend has many positive aspects and I don't know why some people feel they have to slam it any time they get a chance. No community is perfect and living in an urban area does bring challenges other communities don't but South Bend is still a great community. And Mark please stay out, we don't need people like you. And if you're not from South Bend mind you own business, our problems don't concern you.

Posted by: Jay Location: South Bend on Oct 17, 2008 at 11:21 AM
Mark, so many like you out there. Did you ever live in So.Bend? Yes did you stay to help clean it up, so wonderful people like you would still live in SB, or are you one who only drives in to work in SB? Get work some where else since SB is so terrible, my gosh the cell phone not paying attention is the cause, the lack of paying attention to SB problems are caused by likes of UUUU

Posted by: Anonymous on Oct 17, 2008 at 10:41 AM
How did McKinley and Ironwood skip this list? One lane road that people treat as a two lane at this intersection. Once the light turns green, people are all over the road and about side swiping others.. I hate the drive from Granger to IUSB.

Posted by: Pavi Location: South Bend on Oct 17, 2008 at 10:37 AM
The problem lie's in that there are too many idiot drivers out there that race from stop light to stop light while talking on their phone. But Mark is right in that the most accident's will by nature, happen where the most traffic is.

Posted by: Maureen Location: Osceola on Oct 17, 2008 at 10:13 AM
There needs to be a crack down on the use of cell phones while driving, especially texting. How can you keep your eyes on the road and see what you're texting to someone - it's impossible. It only takes a split second of your eyes off the road to cause a terrible accident. I know in Illinois there is a cell phone ban in Chicago and several suburbs unless you use a hands free head set. Maybe St. Joe Co. needs to look into something along those lines.

Posted by: John T. Location: South Bend on Oct 17, 2008 at 09:30 AM
So what were 7,8,9

Posted by: R Location: South Bend on Oct 17, 2008 at 09:23 AM
Grape Road is crazy always not matter what time of the year. Just wait it will get worse with the holiday season and St. Joesph hospital opening. Not only the traffic but add ambulances as well. These intersections are the worse now they will get even worse.

Posted by: sue on Oct 17, 2008 at 08:41 AM
Let's add the Lincolnway E. and Church St intersection to that list

Posted by: Mark on Oct 17, 2008 at 08:31 AM
If 'most dangerous' is defined simply as having the most collisions, then you might just as well name the busiest intesections, which is apparently what you did. More cars equals more traffic eqauls more mishaps. South Bend has fewer unsafe intersections because EVERYONE IS LEAVING!

Posted by: amanda Location: south bend on Oct 17, 2008 at 08:24 AM
Grape Road is terrible everyday, not just at the holidays. I avoid it at all costs. I've seen how some of the idiots out there drive. Everyone is so busy looking around that they are not paying attention to the road and what is going on there.

Posted by: Margie Location: Mish on Oct 17, 2008 at 08:08 AM
It should have had a better design ~~ It is going to get worse with the new hospital. I feel for the police and firefighters when trying to help someone. I will avoid that area and head to Ireland Road !!

Posted by: Myrt on Oct 17, 2008 at 07:24 AM
Maybe that is the reason why they are putting all the medical facilities in that area! I believe everyone has forgotten the three C's of driving: courtesy, caution, and common sense.

Posted by: K Location: Mishawaka on Oct 17, 2008 at 01:16 AM
SOUNDS LIKE GRAPE RD. IS THE AREA TO STAY AWAY FROM. MAYBE IT NEEDS MORE POLICE PRESENCE TO REDUCE ACCIDENTS. TRAFFIC IS TERRIBLE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON. AND IT IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. PEOPLE NEED A REALITY CHECK. USE COMMON SENSE WHEN DRIVING AND STAY OFF THE PHONES.
