From fender benders to fatalities, there's no question driving can be dangerous and some streets require even more caution.
In Mishawaka, police say extreme caution is needed in specific areas.
In fact, seven of the county's most dangerous intersections are in the Princess City.
Police fear drivers will be doing some serious damage as the roads start to really get congested in a few weeks
Halloween is supposed to be the scariest time of year, but out on the streets police have a different answer.
Lieutenant Tim Williams says, “During holiday shopping they’re in too in much of a hurry. They're cutting across traffic which causes people to stop and this causes a rear end collision because the person behind them is not paying attention.”
Many of these rear end collisions are happening right along a stretch of Grape Road.
Mishawaka Police showed us the seven intersections in Mishawaka that are on the top ten list of most dangerous in St. Joe County.
1.) Grape Road & Douglas Road
2.) Grape Road & University Park Drive
3.) Grape Road & Indian Ridge
4.) Grape Road & Day Road
5.) Elder Road & McKinley
6.) Grape Road & Edison
10.) Grape Road & Edison Lakes Parkway
The Collins family says they’re not surprised.
Dawn Collins says, “It's always busy no matter what time of day you come out here.”
Lieutenant Williams says, “ We have more and more people using cell phones and texting while driving and just not paying attention while they're up here.”
Williams says talking and texting are the biggest car crash contributors.
Seventeen year-old Michael Collins agrees from experience with his friend.
Collins says, “He was sitting there texting with his left hand and driving with his right.”
He says that time they were lucky. Like Lt. Williams, he too is worried for what's coming around the corner.
Collins says, “It's going to get horrible during the holiday season.”
Lt. Williams says, “We want people to come up here and enjoy it, make it an enjoyable experience.”
