It seems like you can't make it through even one commercial break without seeing a political attack ad.

But as frustrating as it can be, a Notre Dame Professor says it's not a bad strategy.

Research done at Notre Dame during the 2004 presidential election showed that a small percentage of voters were affected by the negative ads.

That could mean a lot in this year's close presidential race, but many feel that they've gone too far.

“It’s an ugly practice, but I guess they feel like they have to do it,” said Erika Jackson, a voter who says she’s frustrated with the ads.

Notre Dame marketing professor Dr. Joe Urbany says campaigns have good reason to feel attack ads are a good idea.

“Negative advertising, in spite of the fact that we don’t like it, it still can shift opinion,” Dr. Urbany said.

In his research during the 2004 presidential election, 14% percent of those surveyed changed their minds about their favored candidate after watching negative ads.

“The negative is attention getting, it tends to generate more argumentation, and counter argumentation. Again people don’t like it as much, but they’re thinking about it,” Dr. Urbany said.

Some voters say it does get their attention.

“I listen to it and see if there’s a valid reason behind it, if there’s a valid reason for us to have negative issues. But I think it’s really just a bunch of mudslinging,” said Hedi Darnell, who says the ads don’t affect the way she will vote.

“I don’t like them because I don’t think that’s hitting the issues and what’s going on, especially the way the country’s going right now. It just doesn’t work for me,” said Dan Czerna, a voter who says he just ignores the negative ads.

Regardless of his research, Dr. Urbany wonders if it really isn't working for people this year.

“It's seemingly getting to a point where we’re all beginning to turn it off,” Dr. Urbany said.

During his research positive ads were more common, so the negative ads stood out.

This year negative ads seem to be the norm.

“It creates a new context. If everything is negative than the possibility exists that a positive ad is going to be more noticeable than a negative one,” Dr. Urbany said.

Urbany says he's interested in recent research that showed more than half of each of the presidential candidate's TV advertisements are negative this year.

He also wonders if the ads can have a reverse effect, making supporters think less of their candidate because he's running negative ads.

A few of the voters WNDU spoke with felt that way. But they also say you can't fault one of the candidates more than the other this year, since they're pretty much trading blows. Some of the voters just see the ads as each candidate defending themselves.

Most of the voters echoed the same idea, that they’d rather see advertisements based on the candidate’s strengths and issues; to be able to make decisions based on that information. But Dr. Urbany agrees that’s been tough to do with this year’s advertising.

“The negative advertising has gotten in the way of people trying to make those kinds of judgments. There’s very little information about the candidate when all you’re doing is criticizing the other guy. There’s very little information about how you plan to lead, and also the nature of the leadership qualities of the candidate that’s advertising,” Dr. Urbany said.

Actually Sharon, Julie is completely right and her facts check out. You on the other hand are a bit clueless. It is proven that both tax plans will actually save dollars. McCain's plan will save you about 800 and Obama's will save you over 1200.00. Those are the facts that checked out to be true. Way too many of you just listen to crap put out by each campaign. Don't even comment unless you can take enough time to verify what you are saying. It is not hard to do. All the info is open to the public. You can even read the actual Palin report if you want. I did last night. Shady business between her and Todd. There are several national news outlets that have the link. Compare sources between NBC and Fox...they are two totally different organizations with often very opposing views..but they list some of the same fact checks on issues. That is a pretty reliable source of what is really going on.

PEOPLE is anyone listening to the ads at all? They are both bashing each other and it is dirty. Obama is really getting bad and now so is McCain. I am a democrat but Obama's ads are really making me sick. He is no saint believe me but you are putting all the negative ads on McCain (which to me he is a loser) but Obama's are getting just as nasty.

I am a supporter of Obama and have been enlightened by these attacks! The Reps are so desperate, they will do and say whatever is necessary,in order to gain a few votes! Has I been a Rep,prior to these attacks,I definetly would change parties. This is lower than a snake's belly!

TO A First!: I guess people are stupid - most of them like you. Obama is the son of a black man from Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. They met while both attending the University of Hawaii. At a dinner for many people at the home of Bill Ayers Obama was encouraged to run for the senate. However, he also announced his run for presidency standing before the building called Old State Capitol in Springfield, Illinois birth place of Abraham Lincoln. Should we give Obama the praise for Lincoln's accomplishments? After all that's the same logic. Do some of your own research instead of just listening to and repeating crazy B.S.

Yes, these ads have worked one me. I am a republican who will be voting for Obama. McCain threw it away. To A First...Obama is not Arabic, he run was begun in a hotel conference room, and the FORMER domestic terrorist you are talking about was also praised at one time by John McCain for his outstanding work in education reform. John is no stranger to making friends with the wrong side. He was in fact on the board of directors for a right wing group, he was in fact involved with a banking scandle back in the 80's in which he confessed was the biggest mistake of his life, and he did in fact take a major part in the banking deregulation that caused the mess we are in now. Maybe you did not know about that because Obama is taking the high road. But McCains record will confirm all of that. Do we even need to get started on Palin and her unofficial Lt Governor husband Todd?

A First - I agree with you 100%. I guess people really are that stupid!

Julie are you that niave? Yes McCain has no morals but do you honestly believe Obama does? Get real I think Obama is worse and I am a strong Democrat. Neither one of these men should be allowed to run this country but this is all we have. No matter who wins there will be no change for years because this country is too screwed up right now and it will take more than 4 years to fix it. So vote Obama and don't cry when your taxes go way up next year. I will vote as I have for 30 years but no matter who I vote for we are all the losers.

Julie: If a man lies about an association with a known domestic terrorist (regardless of it being nearly 40 years ago) and his involvement with a community organization called ACORN, you'd still vote for him? There's no honesty with Obama. He lies because he knows the American people are like sheep to the slaughterhouse, they're so angry and bitter that they buy into whatever he and the demonerds are selling. CNN has done at least two reports on Obama in the last week, first was outting his true association with William Ayers and the second was showing just how brutal he is as a candidate. The only problem is, that's Chicago Politics. He doesn't like it when the tables are turned. For Obama, it's destroy your enemy at all costs. Even if it means buying an election. And A First is right, we're well on our way to becoming a socialist society.

Is this O J's Picture ? This sure doesn't look like Obama, looks like OJ Simpson to me !

Posted by: A First! on Oct 11, 2008 at 06:41 AM
If Obama wins he will be our first socialist, Arabic/White president who began his senatorial run in Illinois in the living room of a domestic terrorist. Gee...are people stupid or what! LOL!

Of course negative ads work! They will continue to work until we make Transparency and Accountability in government a top priority. The voters' only way to dish out Justice is at the ballot box. Until we initiate a system that meets out Justice at the point of the infraction, what recourse is there? We can't just have a system where we trust politicians. We need to also be able to verify. The ballot box alone is inadequate.

The negative ads have affected me. They made my 92% chance of voting for Obama become a 110% chance. McCain is a bitter old man with no morals. Palin is a joke to beat all jokes. And yet they try to smear Obama. Unreal.
