It's a project some wondered if they'd ever see in their lifetime. Wednesday, ground was broken on the new U.S. 31 project, between South Bend and Plymouth. Governor Mitch Daniels was at the historic groundbreaking in Lakeville.

Major Moves is finally moving! The billion dollar project will upgrade U.S. 31, bypassing it around the small communities that slow traffic.

Those behind the project say it'll make the roads safer and life more convenient for those travelling between South Bend and Indianapolis. The new U.S. 31 groundbreaking has been decades in the making.

“There's been a lot of promises made, a lot of dead ends when it came to this road, this is a road to the future paved with promise of jobs for kids in the next generation, that's exactly what we need in northern Indiana,” says State Representative Jackie Walorski, a Republican out of Jimtown.

It's a change that many are looking forward to, even those that sold land for the project. “When you look at a map, there’s no main artery to South Bend or to Elkhart. And to just get a main artery, as you travel the country, you see main arteries, you see industry on both sides, access in and out,” says Todd Galloway of Lakeville. Galloway told seven acres of his land to the state for the U.S. 31 project.

But not everyone is thrilled about the new highway. Del Vohs is concerned less drivers will be filling up at his Lakeville BP gas station. “I think it's going to have a negative impact on businesses. Especially this time of year, travelling back and forth to the Notre Dame games, you know, will cut a lot of that out,” says Vohs.

Other locals think the bypass is a change they can get used to. “I don't think it'll hurt the businesses much because local people patronize their places. The benefit would be getting the semi-trucks off cause there's traffic,” explains Miller.

Governor Daniels acknowledged there are some mixed feelings about the project, but he said change is necessary in order to make progress. “Years ahead are going to be so much brighter, now that northern Indiana is going to be directly connected on a free flowing interstate, a quality road connected to the center of the state and rest of the state and country,” says Governor Daniels.

Governor Daniels also thanked the people that started this effort to build a new road, years ago.

After Lakeville, Daniels headed to Kokomo to attend another groundbreaking to celebrate the new U.S. 31 down there.

The state is still in the process of choosing a contractor for the project. It’s unclear when construction will start.

The goal is to eventually return the old U.S. 31 to the local communities. They'll be able to make changes and improvements as they like.

How ironic that interest money from the lease of the tollroad is exactly what's paying for this arguably long-needed project, even as April apparently somehow finds offense with the lease.

Hey lakeville and lapaz, what will you do for money when your speedtrap is closed? GOOD!!!! No more speedtraps on 31. Roseland you are next!

Does anyone know how long it will take for MITCH to lease 31 after its done?

Another waste of tax money. We hear so much about the money we DON'T have and spend over $400 million on an "improvement" we don't need. I've heard even some INDOT employees don't know why this is being done.

K, while I believe you when you say you don't mind slowing down, I think you are in the minority, and I think you miss a greater point. I think it's more about the safety of the citizens of Lakeville, in not having to put up with speeding careless drivers flying through their town, than any time savings for those drivers. And you should know that there is a Kokomo bypass project in the works; you just might not have heard of it up here in the fishbowl that is Michiana. As for the hair comments, I thought they were amusing and not malicious in the least (despite the preponderance of Mitch-Haters in this area).

I still do not understand the need to spend so much on this project. I drive this route frequently and never have minded the brief slow down in Lakeville and Lapaz. You lose maybe a minute each town by slowing to speed limit. I do curse Kokomo on every trip to Indy and no one is fixing that any time soon. You can lose 20 minutes in Kokomo and makes trips to Indy much less pleasant. I would even pay a toll to bypass Kokomo. The route of the new US31 is so inconvenient for most folks in South Bend, Notre Dame and Mishawaka we will not be using it anyway. It is unlikely I will ever use it. I am not getting good value for the cost of increased tolls for the rest of my life on every trip east or west.

Well said Southside Local, Carla, and K Brewer, I could not agree more! It scares me that more people post comments about an irrelevant photo than the actual content of this article. What does this say about many residents of our community?

Good for you Carla, be loud, be proud. My opinion is - I vote so I have the right to complain. And it certainly wasn't for an ex-Bushney. No plans on moving, unless Elkhart Co dies the lingering, slow death the future seems to be. Hope it trickles down over here soon. The economy is solid my rear end. Hey, I can look over and see the airport. By McPain standards, that makes me a pilot. For me, I don't want average, I'd rather an extraordinary person be a heartbeat away from leading the free world.

You know, I never noticed the bad hair on Mitch. I was busy listening to what was said. Thats the problem with a lot of people, always looking for the bad in things.Maybe, if you could look at the positive things in life, you might not be so miserable. I would have loved to have gone to the groundbreaking, but had other obligations. How many governors even visit small towns like Lakeville? I'm proud to have voted for Mitch Daniels, as he has done a lot of good for our state, and while I"m on politics,McCain and Palin also have my support. His qualifications in the military , is enough for me, and his running mate Palin, is a go-getter and an average human being. Id consider moving to Alaska, if it wasnt so cold up there. By the way, if you don"t like Mitch Daniels, why dont all of you, move out of state, too.Vote for Mitch Daniels and McCain/Palin!!!

AJ, you'll be happy to know there is a concurrent project taking place to bypass Kokomo. And even Mitch's half-skullet looks better than Long-Johnson's 80's BoRics do...

I personally can't wait for the new 31 to be built. I've been waiting for years and and so glad to know something is finally being done to increase the safety of this stretch of road!

Mitch Daniels looks like he has a pony tail in this picture.

Posted by: aj Location: sb on Sep 18, 2008 at 12:05 AM
I don't really see the benefit of this in comparison to the cost. And unless it's going to help us31 bypass Kokomo I don't feel that it's does all that much to help us31 traffic... Probably just a waste much like our local (City rather than State) big Lincolnway West project with the stupid roundabouts that I absolutely hate. Hey isn't mitch the guy that "leased" our toll road out too ?

Posted by: Ron Location: Plymouth on Sep 18, 2008 at 12:00 AM
Man.... way to put up a bad photo, I wonder if the photographer is like that one who purposly took the bad McCain Photos.

Nice ponytail on the Governor - surely someone got a better photo than the one you used...

Mitch looks like he has a Mullet from that angle.

I guess since hes balding it would be the half-skullett.

Rather than whine about what is, locals need to ditch sour puss pontificating and start planning for the future! Look to Nashville, In. It turned itself into a major tourist attraction. Visitors include those going to IU for various reasons. With an exit for Potato Creek Pk, it's likely visitors may prefer to stay in the vicinity before journeying on to either the park or into SB for ND games! Developing north of LKVL on old 31 could be the answer to preventing the place from drying up and leaving only the blowhards behind! Lakeville could be a bright star in Northern IN if only people will try to think positively and not politically. In this election cycle, it may seem advantageous to whine about all things Mitch, but in reality, even Gov. Kernen was on board with this. When the elections are done, the area will die as a result of those who want Daniels to be shown wrong, or it will be awesome as many forget about cronyism and instead do something positive for all!
