You may have noticed a big jump in gas prices at some local filling stations Tuesday.

Officials from the oil industry say you can blame "Hurricane Gustav."

Some stations in Michiana raised the price for a gallon of regular unleaded to $3.95.

That, despite the fact crude oil prices hit a five-month low Tuesday, dropping more than $3 a barrel. Prices closed at $103 Tuesday after setting all-time highs near $150 dollars early this summer.

A spokesman for Marathon Oil says the Michiana jump in prices is all because of "Gustav."

Robert Calmus says 25 percent of the Midwest's gasoline comes from the Gulf Coast.

Calmus adds two refineries in the Gulf Coast are not operating at full capacity because of power outages and crude supply disruptions caused by Gustav.

He says once those refineries are fully supplied and operating, prices should come back down.

Gas prices nationwide stayed the same Tuesday, about $3.65.

AAA says Indiana's average price is higher, at $3.70. But that's still much lower than we're seeing in Michiana.

We'll take a closer look at the high prices of gas tonight at NewsCenter 16 at 5.

I am halfway tempted to vote any incumbent out in the election. It can't get any worse than it is now. Julie: Palin's husband does work for an oil company, but he is a blue collar worker and isn't getting the big bucks the executives are. He also has no say in what is going on - he's a working stiff like the rest of us.

I suggest everyone just fill up and do the drive off. Hey, the gas stations are stealing from us, so let's get even by stealing from them! (If I were president, we would have NUKED all those arab counties years ago and TOOK their oil, making it a resource of the U.S. government. get rid of the oil companies and just buy gas direct from the government...any profits could be used to fix our roads, bridges AND ELIMINATE OUR INCOME TAXES!!!)

Catch the bus, if you can. Car Pool, cut down on EATING OUT< quit smoking...quit shopping for things you will give away in a year....bring your lunch. Quit whining and do something different to save money. What gets me, is those who whyne and complain, but who eat out for lunch everyday or dinner..and come in with a latte'or hit the pop machine for that diet coke every afternoon.

I can't do this anymore. We're losing everything-- and slowly, it's torture. With the economy in the toilet the way it is, and these gas prices, I've gone from being ahead to falling far behind. What a sad, depressing time this is... unless you work for the oil or repossession businesses.

Posted by: Sporty Location: LaPorte on Sep 13, 2008 at 07:31 AM
Gas is up to $4.39 in LaPorte. 30 cents overnight. Heard on the news, the national news, that 'gas went up 5 cents overnight'. Oh yea? Sure is news to me! Here it goes up by half a dollar. When is someone gonna help us? When are we going to stop being gouged by our local 'gas price fixer' whomever that may be? Would love to know because I'd like to go have a 'chat' with him. It seriously wouldn't surprise me if we had another 'Boston Tea Party' over gas pricing. If it gets much worse,it could happen....it has before over something much less needed. If our politicians won't help us,then that leaves us no recourse.

So what else is new?The American public is sick and tired of your ploys in order to raise the price of gas.Come forward and admit your "reasons";GREED!Wouldn't it be neat to pick up the newspaper and read;"Oil companies admit to greediness. We have you by the b---- and, what are you going to do about it?Sooner or later, this country is going to react and it is not going to be pretty;CIVIL UP-RISING!

Hey Chaz I almost forgot, if you want some of that ocean front property in Michigan I can sell you some also. The same deal cash and I will let you know where to leave it. If you come back 24 hours later you will find the deed to the property.

I grew up in the gas station business, so I do know what I am talking about. You sure are good at reading and believing what the media wants you to believe. That is why you aren't smart enough to see the holes in Obama's supposed plan. I say supposed because you never know when he is going to back peddle and change his statements to make them more appealing to the crowd he is talking to. Do your homework again, Obama is jumping on Pelosi's idea of taxing the pensions of the working people and give it to the lazy who never earned a pension. Funny isn't it Obama couldn't even come up with this idea on his own. He will probably vote present. Let me correct you on your last statement, it IS Obama who has lied and changed his statements not Senator McCain. You are backing a loosing horse. The more you talk the more you show how uneducated you are. Quit will you are ahead.

Posted by: J on Sep 12, 2008 at 09:45 PM
The only reason Bush will have money is because he invested in oil. He loves to see the prices go up. Invading Iraq was just a ploy to make more cash from oil.

Posted by: Julie on Sep 12, 2008 at 09:29 PM
This is nothing but a political game. We were in Louisville, KY yesterday... gas was 50 cents a gallon cheaper there! 50 cents! How do you even explain that?? It was $3.95 here when we left Wednesday, $3.44 in Louisville, and $3.99 when we got back to Plymouth. By the way Palin's husband works for BP oil... see any change there?

Posted by: Sporty Location: LaPorte on Sep 12, 2008 at 11:36 AM
And will you guys knock off the political back and forth tripe? Seriously,if you think either candidate is gonna turn this around or be some hero in shining armor to 'save you from Oil and Gas Co's',then you are seriously delusional. They ALL have their hands linked to Big Oil,don't be ridiculous!! Obama ain't gonna change jack and neither will McCain! They'll BOTH be bought out by the Oil Co's and YOU will be the loser. So vote your conscious but don't be delusional thinking your vote is going to 'change the world'...these are all politicians,folks....they know the game and play it well.

Posted by: Sporty Location: LaPorte on Sep 12, 2008 at 11:32 AM
You think $3.99 or .95 was a crock? Imagine my surprise and utter disgust when it went up 42 cents overnight!! Gas was selling in LaPorte and Mich.City for $3.67/gal and then jumped to $4.09!! I frickin couldn't believe it,man I was hot!! Gouging is dang right! You can't blame some inept storm for this! Gustav was a weak hurricane. It's the Oil Co's gouging away, pure and simple and I'm sick of it!! Oil is coming down like gangbusters and now we're getting 'gang raped' by our OWN people, forget OPEC!! If this doesn't scream and I mean SCREAM for something to be done, nothing will. We need gas alternatives terribly. This is all too clear proof that a monopoly will result in people getting ripped blind every time....pathetic and disgusting...it's terrible. And why the heck does LaPorte/Michigan City always have the highest local prices for gas? Someone please explain this garbage to me! I can go North south east or west and find it cheaper...that's pure BS!!!

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Sep 11, 2008 at 03:44 PM
Anonymous, explain to me why oil companies and large companies want republicans to win. Simple as that. Now, if you knew anything about anything, which you don't obviously, you'd know that gas stations do make only pennies per gallon. How do we know this? Try numerous pieces of invesitgative jornalism fo rthe past 10 years. Try reading some of the articles about the small gas stations that can't compete and are forced to sell to the large oil companies. Surprisingly when you sell yourself the gas, you can make a profit. Shocking huh? As for Obama, he says that he will lower taxes for thos emaking less than $250K more than mccain will. Taxes on retirement investments won't be increased. I fyou want to think he's lieing, fine. Explain to me though ,why you won't believe that McCain, a man who has lied and changed his stances his whole life, is not lieing to you now.

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 11, 2008 at 01:26 PM
Mark if you believe they are only making 5 cents a gallon profit, I have some ocean front property in Michigan I will sell you real cheap! I'll let you know where to drop off the cash. I would say more like a $1.00 a gallon profit. Other wise they would be out of business in less than 6 months. They don't make enough on the pop and cigarettes they sell to pay their rent. Ask yourself this; why are there no gas stations going out of business like in the 70's? If gas stations were such a poor investment the "people" that are buying them up wouldn't buy them and send large amounts of money back to their own country. Now comes Chaz. What can I say other than start thinking for yourself if that's possible. Calling the people that see through Obama's BS and back peddling morons, isn't the the pot calling the kettle black? Obama is going to tax us more to give to the poor, tax our pensions and give to those who don't have one, put our security in serious danger and take away our guns.

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Sep 10, 2008 at 07:35 PM
You guys that think gas will be more expensive under Obama are morons. If that were the case, wouldn't the oil companies like to see him in office? Instead, they're supporting John Mccain. Around $2 million in contributions since he started spouting that drill here drill now idiocy. Follow the money. It really is that simple. Want someone that will fight for the corporations, the upper middle class (those only making $1 or $2 million a year) and the wealthy? Vote for Mccain. If you want someone that will fight for you and has a plan that will reduce taxes on those making less than $250,000, vote for Obama.

In this blog, numerous people have talked about Republicans and Dems. What people haven't realized is that that with all of these profits the politicians are having the palms greased to do nothing. We blame Bush but the Congress is controlled by the Dems. What have they done? See what I mean? They put on a puppet show (taking the leaders of big oil in front of Congress). The price comes down a little and then WHAM, a .20 cent a gallon increase for a different excuse everytime. Please write your Congressmen and Senators and tell them enough. We will not re-elect any of these people unless they get up high on their soap boxes and start screaming. Starting with Mr. Lugar. I don't care how long he has represented us!

Posted by: Another Deb Location: Indiana on Sep 10, 2008 at 06:18 PM
Gotta love those oil companies...first prices go up because the cost of foreign oil is up, and now it's because the oil we have in our own territory is higher? And if only 25% of our gas comes from the Gulf, that means 75% is coming from elsewhere. To the other Deb...Bush's administration has little to do with the huge gas price hikes. Ever since the DEMS took over in Congress in 2006, our gas prices have doubled. So WHO'S to blame in government? GO ahead, keep listening to the drivel they are successfully feeding you. Then they'll rape you from behind as soon as you get them into office. I don't know if McCain is any better than Obama, but I CAN tell you that Congress has much more direct effect on the gas prices than the President does.

Posted by: Bob Location: St. Joseph, MI on Sep 10, 2008 at 06:16 PM
I don't know why everyone makes such a big deal out of changes in fuel prices.!!! We have an option to quit our jobs and let the government take care of us.!!! Obama wants to do that anyway...... You can't fight city hall or the petroleum companies....

There is more petroleum product above the ground waiting to be sold than at any time in the nation's history. When hurricane Gustav is blamed for retail price gouging it makes me sick. Look around the midwest and show us just one locale where gasoline at the pump is in such short supply and they're turning customers away. NO ONE has been denied or rationed gasoline for their needs anywhere, the price spike is a lot of bunk.

Posted by: Total BS on Sep 10, 2008 at 06:03 PM
How can the price jump 30 cents over night but take MONTHS for it to come down the same? Pure profit for the oil people. Suck it, suck it long and hard.

Posted by: Bob Location: Germantown, TN. on Sep 10, 2008 at 05:45 PM
We live near Memphis where they just housed over 3500 people from New Orleans to get them out of harms way and the price has been consistently in the $3.40's.

Posted by: resident Location: South Bend on Sep 10, 2008 at 05:40 PM
Yes it is a crock - Gustav had nothing to do with rising oil prices - in fact oil prices have dropped yet again today (Wednesday, 09/10). ANY excuse to up the prices has been the norm for over a year - from terrorists along the African pipeline to a tropical storm. The national average for a gallon of gasoline is $3.668. But not in Michiana.

Posted by: Dianne Location: Purvis Ms on Sep 10, 2008 at 05:20 PM

5. The gas station owners are making a real healthy profit on the gas they sell. first hand knowledge tell me the stations owners dont make crap. they hope for inside sales. the price is set before they get it. maybe proft of 5 cents per gallon? nothing compared to exxon and the others controlling our livs

Posted by: jim Location: elkhart on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:49 PM
now we know they are scamming us.iol is 102 per barrell it should be going down.gustav didnt tear up nothing to do with the drilling except send the guys home for a few days crooks thats all they are.just another way they can scam us.

Posted by: Facts on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:27 PM
1. The politicians have nothing to do with the cost of gas. Its called free enterprise and in this case a license to steal. 2. It takes 1 year from the time crude arrives in the US before it is gas. 3. We need to reduce our dependence on oil from countries that hate us. 4. Gas will be more expensive under Obama due to higher taxes, driving the economy further down, and putting the security of our country in jeopardy. 5. The gas station owners are making a real healthy profit on the gas they sell.

Posted by: Dan Location: Indianapolis on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:24 PM
Gas prices are $3.95 here in Indianapolis too. The gas station across the street from my apartment went from $3.59 to $3.95. Things will change but not for the better. We'll be paying close to $4.50 a gallon during Thanksgiving and probably $5 a gallon by Christmas. Oil will be $100 a barrel but gas will still be outrageous.

Posted by: mark on Sep 10, 2008 at 03:05 PM
6 hour to go up 35 cents, 6 onths to come back down, if it ever does. somethng else will happen, somone will sneze and it will keep going up. time to fix this bunh o crap

Posted by: rd on Sep 10, 2008 at 02:49 PM
Oil and gasoline on the open market both dropped yesterday (oil by over $3.00 per barrel). When oil goes up, the companies want to raise gasoline prices imediately based on the rise. When oil prices go down, they want to trickle down gasoline prices over a very long period of time. Now they raise gasoline prices because a storm that didn't even affect the market pricing goes through the gulf. This is wrong! Oil is down about 30% from its peak in July, or about $45 per barrel. Gasoline on the market is down about 25% from its peak in July, or aout $1.03. Gasoline and Oil are pretty similar in change on the open market over the same period of time, so we should be around $3.15 per gallon if the change was passed on to the consumer. These companies enjoy big profits when the oil price soars, and then they get to enjoy big profit margins on gasoline when oil makes a quick drop as it has done recently. This system needs to change.

Bulllcrap! Gustav has past, and it has already been reported that damage was very minimal. And Hurricane Ike is missing most of the oil wells also. So, with oil at below $104 a barrell, that is the same relative price as when gas was around $2.65 a gallon. We are being RIPPED OFF even more now than before. Our government is full of people with self ambition, and NO BACKBONE to stand up to big $ business. WHERE HAS OUR COURAGEOUS LEADERS GONE?

Posted by: Anonymous on Sep 10, 2008 at 02:43 PM
Wait a minute, Gustav, did no damage to the oil rigs, he was just a wimp storm. Sounds like price fixing to me. By the way, they have only come down to 3.89 from 3.95.A Michigan team is playing ND, the prices will go back up, since these are games fans can drive to.

Posted by: Deb Location: Elk on Sep 10, 2008 at 02:41 PM
so what'll be the next excuse. Oh yeah, changing over to the cold weather mix. What happened? Did the oil co's just realize they were only going to make $30 bazillion this quarter? Elkhart Co's got one of the highest rates of unemployment and at the pump? Give us a break. The Bushneys and their oil buddies only got a few months of control left ....bend over, it's a-comin'.

Posted by: Ryan Grashorn Location: IUSB on Sep 10, 2008 at 02:29 PM
Have you ever head of price gouging? It is true that capacities out of the gulf fell to 78.3% (which is higher than anticipated) but do you remember paying $3.89 for gas on april 1st of this year when the price of crude was similar to what it is today? I remember prices in the low $3.20s. Why excuses?

We know Bush and Cheney will be going leaving the White House with fatter wallets since they have invested in the oil industry. That is why Bin Laden was not found, his family has a big hand in it as well. Let's just keep losing our soldiers while our gas prices go out of control.

It amazes me that gas in Indy is 3.53 - 3.59 a gallon. We continue to pay some of the highest prices in the Midwest. And we continually hear that the stations are not making any money. Something is rotten in Denmark...

WNDU, you should look into why since the price per barrel is down to arond $100 again, why isn't are gas down to around $3 like it should be? Barrel prices keep going down, but gas prices keep going up. Something doesn't sound right.

this is bs only about 12%per barrel of the oil that comes out of the ground is used for gas anyway the rest is used for other products as it is refined it becomes several things not just gasoline. why is it that only the gas prices increase?

Posted by: Chris Location: South Bend on Sep 10, 2008 at 11:13 AM
I did some investigating on the internet, and when the oil prices first hit $100/barrel the gas prices were average of $3.032 and when oil was $96.32/barrel gas was an average of $2.456. So now that we are back down to almost $100/barrel shouldn't it be back down to a national average of $3.03 or so not $3.65. I think its time for a big big change here in the United States and we need somone to fight for us before we are putting out our whole paychecks into heating our homes and gas in our vehicle. (In south bend by the airport the gas is ranging between $3.85 and $3.90)

Posted by: Jen Location: Elkhart on Sep 10, 2008 at 09:55 AM
Sooooo.....can anyone investigate why we're paying $3.95 here in Elkhart? Can WNDU investigate? Isn't that why you are the "news station"? Or is it that high right now because we have Notre Dame home games going on? Hmmmm..... And all of this blaming Gustav.....there's plenty of reserves.....they're just making the bucks again! Still getting away with it! Too bad the United States isn't "about the people" anymore! What a shame!

People have been conditioned to think and act according to affiliations not what is right or wrong. If people paid attention to the facts, they would quicky realize that the excuses we are given contradict and do not support the claim. Crude oil being down 30% is not reflected at the pump, why not? You want me to beleive that gas prices were dramatically affected by a 3 day storm? Exxon/Mobil has a new commercial touting batteries for electric vehicles yet they have record profits. The lies and contradictions go on and on.

Posted by: Vito Location: Goshen on Sep 10, 2008 at 09:45 AM
If oil drops to a 5 month low, why does fuel go up 30 cents? - What was the gas price the lst time oil was $103 a barrell.

Posted by: Crystal Location: Michigan City on Sep 10, 2008 at 09:41 AM
This is BS, a Speedway station by me raised there price to $4.09 yesterday so Family Express followed. Next thing I know Speedway is down to $3.95 but Family Express still has not lowered there's. Another station in town is at $3.81. If what is going on is not price gouging then I don't know what it is.

Posted by: Not Fair Location: USA on Sep 10, 2008 at 09:40 AM
I really wish they were forced to only allow prices to go up or down when they got a new load - like it used to be. Now these fr**n gas stations have gone digital so they can change prices at a whim. OH OH look out - I feel a breeze - prices will be going up again. Pluse we need to quit using all the other items that use petroleum in them - recycle - do whatever we can to get these giants to lower themselves a few notches.

Posted by: j Location: south bend on Sep 10, 2008 at 09:34 AM
just another lame excuse to raise the gas prices. there was no damage to the oil rigs........do the oil officials think that we're stupid? come on........

Those that have been elected to protect us from this CRIME should take notice and do their job. Rediculous, there is no reason for it. $.20 a gallon are you kidding me. This is absolute price gouging and the owners of these stations should be hit right in thgeir big fat wallets.

Any excuse will do for these butt wipe oil companies won't it. The gas we are buying now was in storage way before the hurricane ever happened, but once again they stick it to us for no reason and get away with it. Coarse if Congress would get off there dead ass and do something like support off shore drilling we would not be in this mess in the first place. Look how oil prices have dropped since Bush lifted the ban; but the democrats in congress want to make the ban permanent. I guess since they own oil stock their pocket is far more important then anything else. THIS FALL FIRE THEM ALL.

That's not what the oil companies were saying last week when it touched ground ... of course there's no republican convention going on this week. I believe that the convention had more to do with the drop last week, I mean who would listen to the "Grand Oil Party" if gas prices were over $4.00 a gallon. Huge unchecked profits over the last 4 years...little investment. This is the same party that has made Halaburton and KBR household names to every solider that has served in Iraq....... Rich get richer and pay less taxes... Middle America is taxed to death and looses their jobs to tax subsidized companies moving to jobs overseas. ALL OF IT ON McCains Watch as a 26 year congressman

Yes, and they want you to think that drilling is the answer, do you really think they are ever going to come off of these high prices? No, it won't matter, it just means more profits for big oil.

Posted by: Mike Location: Elkhart on Sep 10, 2008 at 06:37 AM
Just more price gouging. The price of oil drops and gas goes up. The price of oil has dropped over 30% and at $3.95 the price of gas has dropped about 6% The oil compaines have more excuses than my 3 year old grand daughter.

Posted by: JIM Location: S.B on Sep 10, 2008 at 06:10 AM
Cude oil prices are down 30 percent from the record high prices in july , so gas prices should be around $2.95 a gallon, yet yesterday prices jump up another .33cents. Tomorrow it might rain so they,ll probably raise it some more. good thing their not hosing us.

WE are not idiots. boycot speedway and Marathon, all owned by ashland and see how fast the price goes down!
