You may have noticed a big jump in gas prices at some local filling stations Tuesday.

Officials from the oil industry say you can blame "Hurricane Gustav."

Some stations in Michiana raised the price for a gallon of regular unleaded to $3.95.

That, despite the fact crude oil prices hit a five-month low Tuesday, dropping more than $3 a barrel. Prices closed at $103 Tuesday after setting all-time highs near $150 dollars early this summer.

A spokesman for Marathon Oil says the Michiana jump in prices is all because of "Gustav."

Robert Calmus says 25 percent of the Midwest's gasoline comes from the Gulf Coast.

Calmus adds two refineries in the Gulf Coast are not operating at full capacity because of power outages and crude supply disruptions caused by Gustav.

He says once those refineries are fully supplied and operating, prices should come back down.

Gas prices nationwide stayed the same Tuesday, about $3.65.

AAA says Indiana's average price is higher, at $3.70. But that's still much lower than we're seeing in Michiana.

We'll take a closer look at the high prices of gas tonight at NewsCenter 16 at 5.
