No snap decisions will be made about the future leader of the South Bend Community School Corporation.

The school board's decision on who will replace Dr. Robert Zimmerman as superintendent won't come for about ten months, but some final decisions to get the official search underway were made Wednesday night.

Board member Marcia Hummel says, "You're tying the board's hands if you don't start the process."

There will be no waiting, yet no rush, as the corporation searches for a superintendent.

"We're starting over, and that is something this board is afraid to say," Hummel explains.

What they also fear is ever again having a situation where the board votes to oust its leader halfway through a contract.

Until November 4th, the same group is in charge of making decisions. After that, four new faces could be sitting at the table.

Vice President Ann Rosen says, "I definitely think the community wants the new board to be very involved."

The rest of this board agrees. Their job is laying the groundwork only, and it has already started.

Community Foundation of St. Joseph County has agreed to pick up the bill for the corporation to do a first-ever nationwide superintendent search.

Community Foundation's President Rose Meissner says, "It's hard to imagine any organization that's more important to the future of this community than the South Bend Community Schools, and we just wanted to make sure they were granted the best opportunity to find the best talent."

The board made it clear that interim Superintendent James Kapsa is a very qualified candidate and would be considered if he chooses to be.

Hummel says, "It's not about Mr. Kapsa or wanting him or not. The opportunity to look at what's out there, I think, is really important. Let's involve the community like we've never done before, so when the new board moves on they can even start participating after November 4th."

In the crowd, a potential new face on the board says he's not so sure this will happen.

Kyle Chamberlin, a school board candidate says, "The fact that they're just now setting that path worries me that the timeline won't be in place for the new board to make a decision expediently in the spring."

The school board decided Wednesday night on a time frame for its search.

By September 2nd, they hope to choose some firms they would like to work with to start the search.

In November, after elections, they would like the new board to get involved immediately, as well as the community.

They hope to start the interview process in January and officially name a superintendent by June or July.

Why on earth should it take almost a year to get a new superintendent? School administration has been turned upside down since Dr Raymond left and its not fair to the kids or the staff. $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The people of South Bend really need to take a good look at the existing school board. With the school system running on a deficit budget, where did they find the money to pay off Dr. Zimmerman? And, now, because of the financial issues brought about by the current school board, the St. Joseph County Community Foundation is footing the bill to look for a new superintendent. I believe there are better uses for the Foundation's money that would enhance the whole County, not just certain school board members who are clearly on a power trip. The South Bend School Board is almost as big a joke as the town board of "Snyderville" once was.

STOP wasting our money paying out contracts because you BRATS can't get along with anyone.... Don't you realize how BAD South Bend looks? We don't want someone in there to just say "YES" to you (the board)...we want a better school system .... a great education program, better test results, and a safe place for our children and grandchildren... Everybody wants their children and grandchildren in PHM or Mishawaka or even private schools over South Bend... This is getting RIDICULOUS

The minorities were pushing for a black candidate last time. That's the only qualification they're looking for.

Hey, maybe they can hire the old one who got forced out by popular demand?

All the board wants is someone who will cater to them Bergeron and Hummel need to get off the Joan Raymond horse. I would love to check how many phone calls they have made to her since she left Who wants to come and be the superintendent here if the board is going to control him or her

Good luck, you will never find a good Superintendent until you actually find good Board Members who will pick one!!! The board memers need replaced first.

I disagree with the Community Foundation using moneys to pay for the mistakes of this board. They will not utilize community input in the decision making process, so why should these funds be used.

Does anyone know what a Superintendent does and why such a vast enterprise is needed to do what you would be doing if you were raising your kids instead of the state doing it? Thanks.

Every one of the current board members need to go. If nothing else, NOTHING should be done regarding a new superintendant until the new board is seated.
