Governor Mitch Daniels was in Elkhart County Wednesday and announced his plan to help laid-off RV industry workers.
The governor says three million dollars will be available immediately to help the displaced retrain for other jobs. The state will give displaced workers $6,000 each to earn an associate's degree or industry certification.
Some people in Elkhart are hopeful the governor's latest plan will work. "If people are getting laid off from their RV factory jobs, they're going to need skills in something else to be able to get another job," Jeanne Eubanks of Elkhart County says.
Others aren't sure the plan will work to get everyone back to work. "It's a good plan for the younger people, you know, the ones who haven't been in the industry that long to get the retraining; but then you have your older ones. People are looking for people with out experience who they don't have to pay," Keisa Mc Duffy says.
Displaced workers can apply for financial assistance at any WorkOne center. The amount of funding an individual can receive will depend on the program, but will not exceed $6,000 dollars.
