Senator Evan Bayh will appear with Barack Obama in Elkhart County Wednesday, but will the two appear on the same ballot come November?

If Barack Obama wants to choose a running mate before the start of the Olympics, he would have to do it before Friday.

"There is a school of thought that says Barack Obama should make the decision before the Olympics and before he goes off on vacation," said Notre Dame professor and WNDU Political Analyst Bob Schmuhl, "which would allow the candidate that he selects to go out there and get some publicity of his own or her own."

Schmuhl cites several reasons why Bayh might make a good choice for vice president. "He would bring executive experience -- eight years as Governor of Indiana; he would bring national experience -- two terms in the U.S. Senate; he was an ally of Hillary Clinton in the primary, so that he would be the bridge to the Clinton voters."

On the downside, Bayh wouldn't bring much in the way of geographic balance to the ticket.

U.S. Rep. Joseph Donnelly, (D) Indiana's 2nd District will be at the Elkhart town hall meeting on Wednesday. So does he expect an announcement on a choice for V.P.?

"You know, those are decisions made way above my pay grade," Donnelly joked.

Donnelly did add that if Bayh were to be chosen, the junior senator from Indiana would not be in over his head.

"The man I know, Senator Bayh, has the wisdom, the leadership, and the judgment to serve in any capacity or do anything he chooses," Donnelly said.

Perhaps even odds makers are beginning to believe. A quick check of several websites that specialize in odds making revealed several that showed Bayh as the frontrunner for the job.

The listed odds were as low as 2 to 1. One site showed that just two months ago, in June, Bayh's chances of landing the number two spot were nearly 50-to 1.

Darryl - we will not have a quick fix solving our high cost for energy. And I agree that we need to implement alternative sources to reduce our reliance on oil. But we do need to drill and start now so we have a reliable oil source for the future. Not one controlled by a hostile OPEC. So many of our products such as fertilizers, plastics cosmetics, crayons, credit cards, shaving cream, etc use oil not just cars and trucks. I would love to have a windmill and solar panels but it is cost prohibitive for me at this point. I need a heavy duty pickup truck and although I know the technology for a powerful hybrid diesel is available, it is not on the market. And I will not be able to afford it anyhow. Obama’s energy plan is not new or novel. All of what he proposes is already in production. What he does need to do is to make these en energy efficient products affordable for the average American. From his website, all I see is that he plans to just throw more of our money at the situation and hope for the best.

Sorry I would rather have neither one as President (Obama or McCain). We are in trouble no matter what. Oh well this is how this great country of ours works. They are both a joke.

Many responses here make me feel like it's time for y'all to get out your sheets and pointy hats again, has anyone else burnt a cross in Elkhart again lately ?

...golfclap... Well played Evan. That was good. As for those in his back pocket, I'm a little more concerned about those in McCain's front pocket. The fact that since McCain started talking about expanded offshore drilling about 3 weeks ago, he's gotten $1 million in contributions from oil companies. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Rob - finally someone using his brain! Obama is a scary man, but you are right. Who is backing this man? Why is the media keeping so much a secret? What is really going on is much more dangerous than Obama. Obama doesn't scare me, it's those I can't see in his back pocket that scare me.

You do have plenty of hot air Chaz :)

First off let me say that as an african american male in this country I have seen and felt racism more than most people would like to admit. With that said, Barack Obama scares me. He scares me because he is being protected by the media and has never been really given a hard line of questioning. Who is behind this man and WHY is he considered this great tool of change? His message is hope and change, but what is this change he speaks of. I have read his books and been to his websites, but still I am left with more questions than answers. I will not vote Mr. Obama just because he has my skin color just as I would not refrain from voting for Mr. McCain because he is different from me. Why do Obama supporters feel so strongly that he is this revolution of change? When I ask them I often get called a race trader or a very anti- republicican rant. Obama does not want this to be about race, but his campaign is quick to bring it up as a defense.

Darryl, since when do you believe anything Bush says?

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Aug 6, 2008 at 01:10 PM
Anonymous, where are you paying thousands of dollars to inflate your car tires? I'll do it for 1/2 price.

Posted by: Darryl Location: South Bend on Aug 6, 2008 at 12:46 PM
How ignorant are you, Anon? EVERY expert agrees that we could save millions by conserving FIRST and FORMOST. I suppose you'd rather drill for more oil offshore (even tho the prez himself said that it wouldn't make a DENT until 2017, and then be only 1% of our needs). Jesus, smarten up. Carpool, make your homes AND cars more efficient, get tune-ups and use low watt bulbs, we could make a HUGE DENT NOW. McBush just wants to play catch-up, saying he's for change now. I don't want more oil, I want to see us develop alternatives, become free of oil! My vote is democratic all the way, baby. I'm sick of war-mongering, power-hungry, individual rights-slashing republicans and thier big oil buddies!

Barack Hussien Obama stands for change huh? Only thing is I haven't heard anything come out of his mouth that made any sense yet. Will he be sworn in on the Koran or the Bible? Oops, now that's not very PC is it? He's nothing more than a rock and roll star with a gift of gab.

again...I am so blessed to be in a state that is still racist, uneducated and small minded "thanks, Terry"

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 6, 2008 at 10:59 AM
If Bayh is a junior Senator, isn't Obama a junior Senator?

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 6, 2008 at 10:44 AM
"Ano" where do you think McCain's money for the war to continue is going to come from??? Your pocket and somebody else's from another country because we keep borrowing and borrowing and borrowing and borrowing. We need a new energy plan. Yes it will cost billions....but atleast it will save our children somewhat from global warming effects. War is nothing but a sad sad business for guys who like to put big bucks in their own pockets. Put money towards something good like new and different ways for energy. Oil isn't the answer anymore.....and we need to act soon because eventually we WILL be out of oil. Wind we will not....the Sun...we will not....

I've always voted for a Republican president, but this year I'm pretty certain when it comes time to vote that Obama will be getting my vote this year. I think Bayh would make a GREAT running mate as well.

You know, I would love to see any of you so-called anti any presidential candidates go out, start up a campaign and run for president. If you do not have the balls to do so I really think you need to shut up. Period. None of you can do what these candidates are doing so who are you to talk about anyone? It did not take a President to ruin the economy, It was the people that live in this country that are just as accountable. THINK ABOUT IT.

Obama's energy policy includes millions of americans spending thousands of dollars to keep their cars tuned up and tires inflated so we can save three cents on gas. Coupled with his "release oil" from the strategic oil reserves and taxes on oil companies, we're heading toward another energy crisis not seen since the 70s. Vote for someone OTHER than Obama. If you vote simply for change and not know what is policies are (he's changed so much in the past few weeks), you're going to get what you vote for... a guy who moves with the polling of the country and with no "political background" to back him up on his word... we're all going to get it in the end.

If Barack needs a Vice President, I know a Mayor who'd be interested... Instead of "City of the 21st Century", we can make it, "Country of the 21st Century!"

Posted by: Marissa Location: Elkhart on Aug 5, 2008 at 07:06 PM
I'm sure that the majority of the people in line for Barack Obama's campaign tickets in Elkhart were unemployed. As a resident of this county for a decade I would have to say that it is time that the Republican stronghold on this county be broken down. Maybe it's time to expose and break up the "Old Boy's Club" in Elkhart County. It is damaging to the economy in the area and more importantly to the residents of Elkhart County. May God Bless, protect & wrap his arms around the Children and residents of Elkhart County.

I hope he picks Bayh because I think it will doom the Oblahma bid.
