A gift card will no longer buy you a meal at Steak & Ale, but it appears there's at least one place you can go to redeem your meal.

Last week, we told you that about 50 Steak & Ale restaurants closed down across the country.

The list included the South Bend restaurant at US 933 and Darden.

Now, Texas Roadhouse says you can turn in Steak & Ale gift cards at their South Bend and Elkhart locations, and they will give you a free entree card for their restaurant.

The offer is good until the end of August.

The same bankrupt company that owns Steak & Ale also owns some Bennigans restaurants. Fortunately, the Bennigans in Elkhart and Angola will stay open.

I have a $50.00 gift card from Steak and ALe. Hurray for Texas Roadhouse--They want to give me a $6.00 meal for my card. I'd lose $44.00 on the deal. I'd rather wipe my rear end on it and throw it in the dumpster. This filthy rich SOB that did this should be hung up by his calf fries and BBQed. This was the last of my Social Security check and now I'm going hungry for a month. The bottom line on this "Do not trust any company's Gift Card." I have told all of my friends and family "Do not buy gift cards from any food place or business from Nov 20, 2008 till Nov 20, 2012. As a rule one out of five Gift Cards purchased at this time will go bad.

It's not fair to be angry at the other restaurants list on the back of the card for not honoring the steak and ale cards. The local Ponderosa Steakhouses in the area are franchise restauarants and are not company stores such as the local steak and ale restaurant. Metro Group should be held accountable for reimbursing their customers. It's not about standing up and taking care of their guests, franchise restaurants cannot be held accountable for Metro Groups bankruptcy. Franchise restaurants are trying to survive just like every other restaurant.

First of all why would Texas Roadhouse need another liquor license? They already have one...lol..Texas Roadhouse is just trying to help the peopleso u are not just out that money..They give you a free entree yes, and that is better then anything..Thank you Texas Roadhouse for stepping up and taking care of your community, and showing that you care...

Umm...the liquor license will be seized in the bankruptcy proceedings. Care to make a more intelligent comment?

Texas road house will probably use all of those 100$ gift cards they collect to purchase another liquor license from the bankrupt steak and ale

I haven't been to these particular Texas Roadhouse locations, but the ones I've eaten in have had far better steaks than S&A anyway. Great chili, too. Kudos, Texas Roadhouse.

just received a $100 giftcard about 1 mo ago. Too bad I didn't know it expired in less than 30 days. I didn't even get the option to loose the balance due to non-use fees. thanks, Texas Roadhouse, for taking responsibility for the poor actions of others. maybe cash is the better gift option going forward in today's economy.

To Todd - I don't know what Steak & Ale you ate at, but the local one in South Bend always had excellent steaks and prime rib. And all steak is hand-cut...somebody has to kill the cow!

What happened to giving out "CASH" instead of gift cards. Oh i forgot, people like to charge gift cards with credit cards cause they dont have cash.

I understand andit is great that they are doing it. It's to bad the other business listed on the card won't stand up an take care of there guess. Something is better then nothing.

Or you can just sit on your gift card and be ungrateful, John T. At least you're getting SOMETHING for it... Texas Roadhouse is doing people a favor. Quit directing your anger at the wrong people.

texas roadhouse is a great company to do such a thing wow!!! they are giving free entrees for another restaurant going out of business sounds like texas roadhouse is really helping out the community on this one thanks texas roadhouse

Or John T, You could just take it to TEXAS Roadhouse like the story was written. They dont have to accept them, but they are doing so, to help out local people.

Posted by: John T. Location: South Bend on Aug 3, 2008 at 07:50 PM
All of the restrants listed on the back WIL NOT ACCEPT their gift cards. If it's the paper one's sold at the store than they will. So we the customer are given the shaft!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: John T Location: South Bend on Aug 3, 2008 at 07:42 PM
Back of the gift card shows web site www.metrogroup.com and the site doesn't work? Also says good for at "" participating Bennigan's, Bonanza, Ponderosa" but there site doesn't work so here is the big question what to do? So I guess Bennigan's will when this one!!!

Posted by: John T Location: South Bend on Aug 3, 2008 at 07:29 PM
Wow three is $100.00 that they stole. So I give Texas Roadhouse a card that was worth $100.00 and I get a free entree card? WOW!! Better than a poke in the eye I guess?

Posted by: Todd Location: South Bend on Aug 3, 2008 at 06:40 PM
Pretty fair deal that they did not have to do. You get a good hand cut steak instead of the cheap gristle filled one at Steak and Ale.
