Indiana is ranked in the top ten of states with the highest foreclosure rates.
But a foreclosure prevention network is working to help homeowners.
On Saturday, Lt. Governor Becky Skillman’s office -- along with Ivy Tech -- sponsored a foreclosure prevention workshop.
Homeowners could seek counseling on how to prevent debt, fraud, and mortgage scams.
One Walkerton family, Peggy and Harold Bolin, just received a foreclosure notice after working to prevent it the past year and half. They attended the seminar hoping someone could give them advice on what to do.
They say the county did not assess their property taxes correctly so now they can't afford the mortgage payments. They were under assessed for years and are now paying a year’s worth of back taxes.
“I was notified in Feb of 2007 that our payment was going from 647 to two thousand and I called them and said why is our payment increasing and that's when they said it was about the tax bill,” explains Peggy Boling.
The Bolins tried selling their home but couldn't after problems with the bank. They say the bank has yet to find the “certificate of origin” to the mobile home.
State Representative Jackie Walorski is now helping them and has contacted the State Attorney General's Office.
The Bolins are hopeful something will eventually work out so they can stay in their home.
