It will be Barack Obama's second visit to Elkhart, and it comes just weeks after his last visit to Indiana.

NewsCenter 16's political analyst Bob Schmuhl says that if Obama really thinks he can pull off a victory in Indiana, the visit is a good move.

But it is no small task, considering that a Democrat has not taken Indiana since 1964.

But it seems like Obama's camp thinks it can be done.

"I've worked a lot of campaigns over the years and I've never seen anything like this. There's just a groundswell of excitement for this candidate," said Andy Jones, an Obama supporter who attended a "Cookout for Change" event at an Elkhart home Sunday afternoon.

News of the visit has supporters encouraged that Obama wants to win Indiana.

"I think it's going to be a mistake for the McCain camp to discount Indiana as being in the victory column for them. I hope that they do stay away, because we're going to carry Indiana for Senator Obama," Jones said.

Schmuhl agrees that the campaign is making a move.

"I think they're making a push -- they need to find states that they can pick up, and I think Indiana is on their radar screen," said Schmuhl. "It puts the pressure on the opponent to take the state seriously, to visit the state and make his case, to invest some money in advertising throughout the state."

Schmuhl pointed out that at this point, McCain doesn't have any election offices in Indiana, while Obama has them in multiple cities.

Obama's interest in Indiana has lead to some speculation concerning one way he could pick up many Hoosier votes -- Indiana Senator Evan Bayh is reportedly on the short list of vice-presidential candidates.

"He has a good deal to offer the ticket. Let's face it, he won decisively in Indiana, and it looks as though each time he runs his margin improves," Schmuhl explained.

Meanwhile, Obama's campaign is trying to build on the votes they already have by continuing to nurture the grassroots.

"Identifying voters, getting them registered, getting them involved. We saw that throughout the primary season, and I think the only question that one has to ask is, 'will they sustain that momentum?'" Schmuhl said.

Some analysts have wondered if Obama's activity in Indiana is meant to distract John McCain's campaign, and make the Republican use up resources here.

Schmuhl points out that a lot of time and money are being spent here, and calls it a good indication that Obama is serious about Indiana.

The Democratic presidential candidate will hold a town hall meeting at Concord High School's McCuen Gym. The campaign has not yet released exactly when Obama will arrive, but says the doors will open at 7:15 a.m.

The event is free and open to the public, but you must have a ticket to get inside and see the Illinois senator. You can pick up tickets at Senator Obama's campaign office at 116 S. Main St. in Elkhart. His office will distribute tickets from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.

Senator Obama made multiple trips to Michiana during his hotly contested Democratic primary with Senator Hillary Clinton. He made stops in South Bend, North Liberty, Elkhart and LaPorte County in April and early May.

Republican rival John McCain has yet to make a presidential campaign stop in Michiana.

We will continue to update you on Barack Obama's visit and on the entire Decision 2008 process on NewsCenter 16 on the air and here on WNDU.com.

you all suck

Chris, trying to explain anything to you is like trying to nail a fart to a post. Of course you wouldn't feel differently. You have to have a heart to do that. By the way, the laws of this country was based on the laws of the Bible. May I ask if you took spelling or English in school? Never mind, I won't be back on here to read your reply. I have better things to do than argue with you. Good-bye.

For one the goverment doesnt shut down those companies u missed my whole point the goverment doesnt control the economy it is a FREE market economy and i never said the elderly couldnt have medicare or medicade no once did i say they couldnt and guess what they have those programs dont they if u work and save and contribute to society you will have money when your older if you dont save then thats your fault and dont bring religion into this it has nothing to do with it so leave that out. and no i wouldnt think differently after seeing cancer patients why would i? Doctors charge alot of money yes way to much but what does that have to do with the goverment if we want the doctors to charge less its going to take a citizen uprising not goverment intervention

Spend a couple of days in Riley's Hospital in Indianapolis, especially the cancer unit. Talk to the children and look at their faces. Talk to the parents about their finances. Then come back and talk to me about compassion. I think all of you would think differently if you did this.

Posted by: Rusty on Aug 9, 2008 at 06:33 AM
I am very compassionate, that's why I feel people should learn the hard lessons. I have been very near homeless and learned a lesson. By learning the right way, we are able to understand that it is no one's responsability to pick us up when we're down, but OUR OWN. Then we plan ahead and make better stewards of our resources when we have them for next time there is a down time. That's the difference. Not lack of compassion. It's insensitive to watch people you care about become dependant on government instead of themselves. When I reach retirement, if I am stuck on SS (classified as a welfare program) then that means I did not do a good enough job of planning for my own future and deserve to be poor. we reap what we sow. Keep reading the Scripture and you will see that God intended us to care for ourselves so that we, as a church, not government could care for the sick and poor who could not care for themselves.

How sad so many of you think you have all the answers. What about the less fortunate like the crippled people, the elderly, the sick, the people that just lost their jobs due to companies shutting down, etc? They are not stupid nor lazy. Some have paid taxes their whole lives and now they need help. But in your worlds you would just let them do without. Someday you may come upon hard times and then what? Will you ask for help? I bet I know the answer to that. Remember-"A rich man will enter the kingdom on heaven like a camel through the eye of a needle." By the way, I'm a senior citizen, I have a job, and I do not get assistance. I just have a heart.

Posted by: Rusty on Aug 8, 2008 at 03:49 PM
One thing you forgot willie, luckily there are enough people like us that are still willing to work for what we have, AND for what they get, handed out.

Posted by: Willie Location: Niles on Aug 8, 2008 at 08:46 AM
Some good stuff Mike, Chris, and Rusty. But you're forgetting the democrat mentality: they WANT someone to take care of them and they see government as that entity. Luckily there are enough people like us that are still willing to work for what we have.

Posted by: rusty on Aug 7, 2008 at 07:00 PM
The previous posting seemed a little incomplete, so here is the rest... When government is the answer, problems compound. Let the market dictate price, supply, demand etc. When true Free markets work, corrections will be made naturally. The mortgage "crisis" is prime example..The shady lenders making bad loans to people who cannot really afford the home and they default, it should not be "rescued" by govt. ie my earnings siezed in taxes. The people who CHOSE to buy homes that they couldn't afford with the slightest bump in the economy should lose their home if they do not pay. The lender should go belly up for lending money poorly. When the correction happens, there will be responsible borrowers and lenders left and people will buy what they can actually afford. Capitalism is GREAT when government quits meddling. This recent bailout will only delay the inevitable. Let capitalism rule, stop using the money I earn to pay for others' irresponsibility. God bless America I have 1 vote.

Posted by: Rusty on Aug 7, 2008 at 04:31 PM
Wow, here's a great example (local) of an economy run by the benevolent democrats. SOUTH BEND. Run and controlled by dems for what 60 yrs? My, how it has become a utopia. Everyone else in the country is trying to figure out how to get here. If you like the way South Bend has been run by dems for years, then continue voting that way for the whole country. BTW does anyone besides me remember Nazi Pelosi and the big dem majority congress promising lower gas prices in 04? Hmm they've doubled. thanks nance. The 2 biggest problems (economically) in America today are Energy costs and Healthcare, both of which are VASTLY regulated and controlled(taxed) by government oversight and regulatory agencies. Gee Mr. Obvious, I never made the connection...

Posted by: chris Location: indiana on Aug 7, 2008 at 03:52 PM
When are people going to realize that people control the economy not the president. If your poor its because ur stupid. GET A JOB if u cant get a job get an education and dont say u cant do it. everyone starts off poor its the ones that dont say why me all the time that make it. you cant expect the goverment to help u out just because ur down help yourslef

Posted by: Mike Location: Elkhart on Aug 7, 2008 at 03:39 PM
I keep reading about how bad it is for the "Poor" when a republican gets elected. Instead of complaining how tough you have it, get an education and get a job. The people I see that suffer the most is the people who can walk 5 miles to the welfare office to collect a check and food stamps but they are not capable of working a 40 hour a week job. I am tired of hearing how bad you have it. If you truly have an issue where you can not work and need assistance, this does not pertain to you. This is for the majority of people complaining and yet they are too lazy to get out and earn a living like the rest of us. I can't wait until someone passes a law requiring you to fail a physical and to pass a drug test before you get any of the tax dollars that I went out and earned. I have problems just like everyone else and I have kids that I send to daycare, but that does not stop me from earning a living for my family. Don't blame the Republicans, they want you to work and earn a living.

Charles Barkley said it best: "Poor people have been voting for democrats for the last 50 years, and they're still poor."

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Aug 7, 2008 at 09:41 AM
Fair enough: According to Congressional Quarterly (CQ) McCain voted with Bush 1005 of teh time in 2008, 95% in 2007 for an average of 88% in the past 7 years. The average for republican senators in 80% so he's above the average partisan. He's actually more of a Bush rubber stamp than most republican senators. http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:SK3EsXX1tcQJ:www.progressivemediausa.org/2008/05/27/john-mcsame/ mccain voting record bush&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=12&gl=us

Posted by: Shelby on Aug 7, 2008 at 08:29 AM
Chaz - pictures hugging = just like Bush....that’s the first thing you have said that is irresponsible. Must have posted this when you were tired. I'd like a site for that 'voting with Bush over 95% of the time" reference. Mindy - that fact that he is half black is irrelevant. He is also half white raised by Caucasians. Who cares? He's an empty suit and I am concerned about who has their paws on his puppet strings. Probably Pelosi.

Posted by: Mindy on Aug 6, 2008 at 10:45 PM
No where in my post did I ever call anyone an idiot. Learn to read before you respond please. I know for a fact that every time a republican was voted in president, all the poor people in this country has suffered even more financially. When we have a democrat for president, we are all better off financially. History proves it, and I've lived a long time kids. Long enough to see a lot of it with my own eyes. Has anyone ever wondered why Bush has been voted as the United States most hated president in history? Well, McCain plans on taking up where Bush is leaving off. Are you happy with the way things are now? If you are, then you are one of the very lucky ones, because many of us are suffering under the republicans. Many of you are just scared because the man is black. Get over it! He's a good man. And by the way, I do enjoy my freedom of speech and I always will. Thank you for asking.

Posted by: Concerned Voter on Aug 6, 2008 at 09:50 PM
Obama just says what you want to hear and McCain is another Bush. So who is the best? Neither one they will not do a darn thing to help the middle class. This country will really be in the toliet next year!

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Aug 6, 2008 at 07:46 PM
So McCain voting with Bush over 95% of the time makes him a maverick and centrist as does the Bush bashing that never really happened. (See many of the pictures of them hugging) And of course he could be lieing about his positions too right?

Posted by: Joe on Aug 6, 2008 at 06:43 PM
Obama has a good ideas just through money at all the problems and it will all go away. Good idea but its my money! Take some of his money that he has wasted on his campain and put it in the pot! Now lets talk !!

Posted by: Shelby on Aug 6, 2008 at 05:32 PM
Chaz - Obama's website is merely propaganda and is skewed. Politicians will do ANYTHING to get elected. Even lie (gasp). Furious: McCain is not Bush. He has been a vocal critic of Bush since losing the republican nomination to him.

Posted by: mike Location: elkhart on Aug 6, 2008 at 04:26 PM
To Furious: What type of drugs are you on? Or are you just drunk? People like you are such idiots. Here's the way it is: Regardless of whether you're a republican or a democrat, what really matters is your view on how the country should be run. And even at that, unless you have a congress that is on your side, nothing will ever get done because they will vote against you if you're a rep and they're a dem, or vice versa. It's just the way it is. Stupid huh? But as long as he prez has ideas that are for he good of the country, at least we're heading in the right direction. Obama is all about change. Who could not agree with the FACT that we need change? McCain is all about continuing what is going on now, which is nothing good for the US citizens. I'm Not a democrat or a republican, but I think at least Obama is wanting to try something different. Bush has sure not done us any favors and McCain will follow suit. I think whoever gets in needs to think about this country only, no one else.

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Aug 6, 2008 at 03:12 PM
Actually if you look at Obama's website Anonymous he wanst to increase the size of the army by 65,000 troops and the size of the Marine Corps by 27,000. Also, the last 7 years have seen more stifling of free speech and a shredding of contstitutional rights than any other time in our history. "Free speech" zones that are the only place you can protest, suspension of habeas corpus, subversion of the 4th ammendment, etc. I could go on but I hope you get the idea. The idea that the democrats want to take away your rights is ludicrous. Even mroe so when you see that the republicans have been doing that for the past 7 years.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 6, 2008 at 02:23 PM
Mindy - you have a right to free speech. Doesn't it feel good to be able to call people idiots? With Obama you won't be able to do that anymore. Your beloved Democrats are trying to silence what they call hate talk or anything religious. You keep voting Democrat and find out where your free speech ends up! I'll take freedom of speech, the right to bare arms against the government if necessary, the right to choose my own health care provider, and the right to have as many children as I want, and the right to grow old without feeling like an unnecessary weight on society. And by the way; Obama wants to downsize the military because he knows that they are a threat to his running this country the way he and his liberal friends are dreaming of. To Shelby - He wants to fund a campaign against HIV in Africa. That must be a joke! Obama could care less about people dying!

Posted by: Hoch Location: Elkhart on Aug 6, 2008 at 01:02 PM
One thing for sure, if Obama does not get elected he could always become a Town Council member for Roseland. He would fit in.

Posted by: Shelby on Aug 6, 2008 at 10:55 AM
Mindy - Have you not been reading? Obama wants to nationalize the police and fund it higher than our current military. He states he will send more troops (10,000 ) to the middle east and he wants to fund a world campaign against the HIV epidemic in Africa. Where do you think this money is going to come from? YOU! Get informed.

Posted by: Les on Aug 6, 2008 at 09:49 AM
Well Chaz you do understand. This country was founded by people that wanted to take care of their selves. That IS what makes the US different in this world. They did not want the government to take care of them and I do not ether. If you want the government to take care of you then the democrats are definitely your party. Here are a couple of countries that the government take care of you, Cuba, Russia, and China; the list goes on. There is one thing you may not be aware of; you can NOT help anyone that is not willing to help themselves. Which brings me back to the democratic (Sen. Obama) seems to think that we can help the helpless. YOU CAN'T! No matter how deep they go in my pocket it will never work. And to MANDY HOW many people do YOU know that make over 70.000? So how many people does that leave to pay for all these programs he wants to start? I will be honest there is not one person in my family or friends that makes half that much. Wake up and hear the tax man coming

Posted by: Bb on Aug 6, 2008 at 09:46 AM
O.K. people, if you really want to know who has done what, look it up online. There is a wealth of information about the candidates and what each party stands for. It might help some of you with these far out ideas and opinions.

Posted by: Myrt on Aug 6, 2008 at 08:49 AM
To Voter: Amen!!!!! Oops, I probably shouldn't write that because somebody will be offended and the ACLU will step in. Vote for the person that YOU feel is representing you and your needs. I could NEVER understand how a person could vote a straight party line unless ALL the candidates in that party have the same views as you do - the chances of that happening are slim. Vote your for your beliefs, not what a certain party believes!!!!

Posted by: Leo Location: Granger on Aug 6, 2008 at 07:58 AM
Free Health Care ... are you kidding, did Obama actually say that! You must realize that nothing is free. Is the government going to print more money for EVERYONE to have free health care? Nothing can be free with out taxes being raised considerably. The welfare program is already out of control.... the working people are getting tired of paying for everyone's health care plus their own. We need to help those in need, but after years and years of getting free health care while I pay for my families has got to stop. So called "free healthcare" will be payed by a few in higher taxes. Lots of good ideas, but more and more government programs are not the answer.

Posted by: voter Location: USA on Aug 6, 2008 at 07:14 AM
I will vote for Qbama because he's black, no wait I'm a Replican, but to be corrct we need to elect a blck man. People stop being so stupid. Vote for whats right for America, not just a party or color. Get your heads out of your you know what and think for once. Really think about what your doing. Don't just vote for someone because that is your normal party, HELP America.

Reader: You hit it right on the head of the nail. The Democrats do plan to take our guns, tax us out of our houses and make us see Government Doctors so they can decide whether we deserve the treatment or not. Look at how well liberalism has gotten countries that follow these policies. Why can't you learn from other countries mistakes? Try being over the age of 80 in Canada and get any health care. Obama is not welcomed in Indiana and most certainly not in my hometown and definitely not in my township. I am a white girl clinging to God and my guns. I am also glad I was punished with a baby. Make that three babies! Obama is a sick, sick man! Don't let them fool you. If the Democrats could kill off all the babies and old people they would. If they could make us all slaves like in China they would.

Posted by: Mindy Location: Marshall County on Aug 5, 2008 at 07:12 PM
Go ahead and bash Obama if you want to, but yesterday on The View, he said he would lower taxes for anyone who makes under $70,000. Today on The View McCain said he would lower the rich people's taxes and enlarge our armed forces. Who's going to pay for the the enlargement of our Armed Forces if he's lowering the rich person's taxes??? US POOR PEOPLE, THAT'S WHO! Obama said he would make sure that everyone has health care in this country. McCain is just like Bush, he could care less. I for one cannot afford to vote for McCain. We need someone in the White House that cares about the poor, the sick, and who isn't in there to make the rich even richer. I VOTE FOR OBAMA!!!

Posted by: Willie Location: Niles on Aug 5, 2008 at 05:03 PM
On the subject of "taxing the rich", and why anything but a straight percentage isn't fair: Jane makes 250k per year and Joe makes 25k, and they both pay 10% tax (dream on, I know). That means Jane pays $25,000 in taxes per year and Joe pays $2500. Is Jane getting more government services even though she pays ten times as much? No, in fact, it is more likely that Joe is getting government help. And (back to reality), if Joe has any kids he's probably not paying any taxes at all. So is it fair to try and tax Jane even more, as some want to do? FLAT TAX is the only equitable solution. I'd like to hear some opinions on this (yes, Chaz; you too).

Why hasn't more tv stations, other than fox news, commented on the book "Obama Nation by Dr. Joseph Corsi. Are they trying to keep this quiet?

Posted by: Mike Location: Elkhart on Aug 5, 2008 at 03:16 PM
Well Chaz, I guess there is more than one thing that we agree on!

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Aug 5, 2008 at 12:59 PM
Mike, we just have fundamental disagreements on this stuff. I will clarify something though and this may change your view of me slightly. I wish churches and people would support many of the programs that government currently provides. I view them as social concerns that the church should address and has failed to do so. I think people that are down on their luck and need help should be able to get some support from the church and their fellow man as Christ calls us to do. Kind of like the Amish. Unfortunately, we don't do that. It's every man for himself. Until we can correct that, I'm fine with the government providing the help. Except for healthcare. I view that as a right and it's just plain a good investment versus reactionary emergency care which cost so much more. As for the dems, they've been holding hearing on stupid stuff so it looks like they're doing something because the republicans are being so obstructionist. As for my spelling, frankly I just don't care that much.

Posted by: Mike Location: Elkhart on Aug 5, 2008 at 08:20 AM
But Chaz, when the rich invest their money, isn't that going back to companies to invest in jobs? And if you are going to invest, you're going to do it to make money. You're not going to invest in something or a company that doesn't give you a good return on your money. So when they sell their stock, it's worth more than when you bought it. The one thing that you and I do seem to agree with is small business. They do employ most of the people in this country. They also do need protection if this country is to prosper. Since the Dem's have been in power, we've had all kinds of hearings about why we have steroid use in baseball. Is that something government should be involved in? I'll also remind you that Nancy Pelosi chose to go on summer break without voting for drilling off shore. Barack also flipped yesterday and said it was a good idea. Now what he does if he's elected is a different thing. You know Chaz, the price of oil is down just because we've been talking about it.

Posted by: Mike Location: Elkhart on Aug 5, 2008 at 07:56 AM
Reader,I never said you lived in Michigan, maybe you assumed I did. But when you started calling all kinds of names like that, I did assume that you were out in left field somewhere! Chaz and I don't always agree with each other, but I do respect the fact that he uses his own name. At least I know who I'm talking to. Instead of calling names why don't you tell me what Barack is going to do for this country? I haven't really heard yet. I have some pretty good ideas of what he's going to do , but that's my opinion. So from now on, why don't man up and use your own name? Oh wait, maybe I was wrong to assume that you're a man......

Posted by: Les on Aug 5, 2008 at 07:55 AM
The Constitution was written with the idea that YOU wanted to take care of yourself, and not have the government take care of you. Thomas Jefferson's words should be ringing in our ears. The trickle down economics doesn't work anymore because the last democratic president dammed up the river and sent the jobs overseas. We need more foresightful leadership like that.

Posted by: Troy..? on Aug 5, 2008 at 06:13 AM
Taxing only the people who make $250k and up? LOL! That is what he says now! Just wait if he gets elected. Everybody who works wil be paying 50% of their income to pay for his crazy socialist programs. He wants to supplant European socialism right here in America. A politician will say anything to GET elected. That is why he is a politician. This guy is DANGEROUS!

Posted by: hay Chaz on Aug 5, 2008 at 05:59 AM
It's obscene, not obsene. If I want to keep $20.00 and save it, what business is it of yours? Other than the fact that you and Obama want 50% of it for doing nothing. Also it's having, not havign. It is also filibustered, not filibusterd. (Does your 1st grade teacher know that you are at home on the internet today?)

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Aug 4, 2008 at 07:16 PM
Actually the American tax burden is about 45% but I just was using 40% as a hypothetical. And as for creating jobs, the trickle down theory of economics doesn't work anymore. The problem is the obsenely wealthy simply don't do much with their money other than invest it and sit on it. Small businesses are what needs the greatest protection and support. Who start small businesses? Almost 70% are started by first time owners that are in the lower or middle class. Not the wealthy. Not the upper middle class. The rich don't create jobs with their wealth like they used to. As for congress havign such alow approval rating, I'll remind you that the republicans have fillibusterd and obstructed more legislation than any congress in history. They even ha dthe votes to pass more offshore drilling on Friday. 11 of them switched their votes so they could engage in theatrics later in the day. Typical.

I'm looking forward to Sen. Obama's visit. Michiana needs to hear his message that uniting across differences is the best way to move America forward from the past eight years of war, economic instability, immigration debates, corporate welfare, and a real lack of integrity in executive leadership. Hoosiers and Michiganders, let's stand together for change!

Posted by: Troy Location: Columbus on Aug 4, 2008 at 06:40 PM
It's funny how everyone is claiming that Obama is going to tax us into oblivion...but unless everyone here makes over $250,000 a year, you will actually be getting a BIGGER tax break under Obama! McCain's tax break will be mostly for the top 1%. http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/11/news/economy/candidates_taxproposals_tpc/?postversion=2008061113 Also...it's MCCAIN's tax proposal that will increase the deficit the most. Interesting. He'll tax the poorest among us more than his Democratic rival, increase the deficit more as well, yet we call him the tax and spend candidate?

Posted by: Reason on Aug 4, 2008 at 06:28 PM
What I hear from all the below comments is a bunch of frightened conservatives that think just by considering democratic nominee the government will show up on thier front door step, claim thier house and their guns, and tell them what doctor to see and what religion to practice. Folks, you've have bought into the fear mongering of the past 8 years. I can't say that Senator Obama may not look to pass some government funded programs; but wouldn't it be nice to know the federal programs are appropriately funded so that by the next time a Katrina hits that Fema won't be so underfunded due to a ultra conservative agenda that they can't even set foot outta Washington?! The war must end and we need to reestablish America's place in international affairs - anyone see the amazing support Obama got in Europe?! We need to stop government surveilance thru "executive privilege", and torture practices by private contractors. And most importantly, we must vastly reduce our dependence on ALL oil!

Hey Shelby: you just make up quotes, or what? The statement you quote actually originates with Gerald R. Ford (no even close to T. Jefferson), who said, "A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have," in an address to a joint session of Congress on August 12, 1974. But don't let the facts get in the way of your tirade. You're so cute when you're hearing voices.

Dear Reader, Michigan is just the epitome of fiscal responsibility! At least we have money to spend!

Reading these comments here give me a clear understanding why the GOP has had its way with Indiana like we were a drunk prom date. Mean spirited, cynical, loud-mouthed, ignorant Hoosiers.

All I want to say atm is to offer this quote to Chaz who seems to want the big 'we'll take of everything' government that Barack will provide: 'A government big enough to give you everything you want, is big enough to take away everything you have.' ....... Thomas Jefferson'

Obama = Nothing more than a "media darling".

Posted by: Mike Location: Elkhart on Aug 4, 2008 at 03:28 PM
What do you mean 40%? You better redo your math. By the time you pay income tax, state, county, city tax, FICA, Medicare, sales tax, tax on everything, I think we are WAY over 40. I don't mind helping someone when they're down, but not for the rest of their life. You and I have already talked about heath insurance and you know how I feel about that. You say that the money goes to big corporations, but they are the one who take the risk to keep you in a job. The government doesn't create jobs. If they do what do they produce? If you tax the rich more, they will not spend as much(you know the people who have the money to actually create jobs). I don't know why you think that someone who has worked very hard to get to where they are, has to give it to someone who refuses to work? That just baffles me to no end! You also forget who is in control of Congress right now. You might also know that their approval rating is at 14%, the lowest EVER.

Posted by: Dave Location: Bourbon on Aug 4, 2008 at 02:56 PM
Chaz - read the Constitution! It's not the federal government's resposnibility to give our tax dollars to the poor or to the wealthy or to corporations. It was never intended that the government pay for healthcare. It was written with the idea of a very limited federal government.

Posted by: Fred on Aug 4, 2008 at 02:29 PM
That's brilliant, Chaz. Are you worried about unemployment? Who is more likely to create new jobs, the average guy like us making an average wage, or a multimillionaire? Why someone already rich take a chance on starting a business, when he's going to get nailed by higher taxes? If anyone wants to destroy the economy, raise taxes on the rich.

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Aug 4, 2008 at 01:34 PM
Shelby, Debt, not deficit. The defeicit is at an all time high when you factor in the costs of the war which they do not include in the federal budget numbers for some reason. $600 billion next year when you incluse that. But the debt will be up to about $8-9 trillion by the time Bush leaves office. We will have to spend 20 to 25 cents of every tax dollar simply paying the interest. Mike, I know where the money comes from and I'd love to pay as little of it as possible. What bothers me is that you're not concerned with where it goes. Here's a neat thought experiment. Assume the government will take 40% of your money. It's just gone. Would you rather have that go to the poor and pay for stuff like healthcare for the average citizen or rather have it go to the wealthy and corporations? I don't feel the republican party accurately represents the ideals of that party any more. They are not fiscally repsonsible, not for small government. They are for outsourcing it all to corporations.

It's not about race, and he isn't a muslim, as some of the wack-jobs claim. He's probably even a nice guy in person. The problem is that BHO is simply an inexperienced, egomaniacal, liberal socialist with the fawning news media promoting him. Unfortunately, with all the lazy people in this country who want the government to take care of them, socialism is where we're headed. And just one other, small point while we're at it: If you start punitively taxing the "rich", what then is the motivation to do any better for yourself? To me all this talk of "rebuilding the middle class" smacks of communism...

Obama's Engergy Plan: Tapping into the Strategic Reserve and a Windfall Tax - Can any of his supportors explain how this will help? Again, this just proves his ignorance and inexperience in the real world as the Reserve was not meant to be used just because of High Prices and Creating "Wind-Fall Taxes" will not do anyting to bring down the price of gas - this guy is a FOOL! I can only pray the common sensed Americans realize it and do not vote for this smooth talking billary jr. A second thought: Why are we paying both of these canidates' salaries for being senators while they're running for President "FULL-TIME"?

Who really cares if Obama is visiting Elkhart? I wouldn't walk across the street to see either one of them. I believe that all of us in this country would be better off if we had no president for about 4 years! One candidate is as bad as the other.

I live less that one mile from Concord High School and will not be attending the event. Thankfully, I will be out of town on Wednesday so I should miss the who thing! I am sure that Obama has a charismatic personality and is a captivating speaker... but what does he speak of? Aside from the color of his skin, how is he different than any other Dem who would run for president? I am a Republican (who will not be voting for McCain) and was thrilled to see that a woman and a black man were running head to head Cem nominees. I think that shows we are heading in the right direction. I would love to see Colin Powell or a man of his stature run for president, but Obama is too cartoonish... unbelievable.

Shelby, you might as well give it up. Trying to talk to Chaz is like talking to the wall. He thinks the government is here to provide his every need. He wants free everything but doesn't understand where the money comes from. He also doesn't understand that the people of this country make it great, not the Government. He has no solutions to offer, just wants to bash the current administration, kinda sounds familiar doesn't it? Believe me I have tried. And then we have John who reads the paper, and knows all there is to know. Just ask him, he'll tell ya. Hate to inform you John, but readership of the newspaper in this country is in sharp decline. Maybe you can keep them in business. I really don't know where race comes into this picture, but I do know that if Barack is elected, all of our needs will be met, and none of us will never have to lift a finger for anything ever again!

Obama does not have America's BEST INTEREST at heart - he has no clue! As he said, he will stand with the Muslims if the world turns against them. Also, this guy is the same guy claiming he's a Christian, but he's pro-choice and for gay rights; nice.

First off let me say that as an african american male in this country I have seen and felt racism more than most people would like to admit. With that said, Barack Obama scares me. He scares me because he is being protected by the media and has never been really given a hard line of questioning. Who is behind this man and WHY is he considered this great tool of change? His message is hope and change, but what is this change he speaks of. I have read his books and been to his websites, but still I am left with more questions than answers. I will not vote Mr. Obama just because he has my skin color just as I would not refrain from voting for Mr. McCain because he is different from me. Why do Obama supporters feel so strongly that he is this revolution of change? When I ask them I often get called a race trader or a very anti- republicican rant. Obama does not want this to be about race, but his campaign is quick to bring it up as a defense.

For all of you, looking forward to seeing this wolf in sheeps clothing, I don't even want to hear you complain a couple of years from now! This man is a joke! You think he is going to change things? Yea, to better himself and get richer! You really think he cares about us, look how he treated the military in Germany, think he would treat you any better? He has no experience what so ever, how he even got on the ticket, I'll never know. And of course, then there's his wife, and his "former Pastor" Wow! There will be changes alright, more then any of you can even imagine! Please do us all a favor and keep him there, we sure don't want him to the west of you! He is so liberal, it is pathetic, plus his muslim background, that alone should scare the pants right off of you! Savoir? Please, more like the Anti Christ! He even took the American flag off his plane, and put his own logo on it, how American can that get? In a couple of years, you'll all be wearing turbans! And riding camels.

It's time to wake up and be an adult and except what is happening and isn't because of our gov't, and it's not about race, age, gender. Obama is a marxist and Macain is a wanna be liberal. Neither one will do our Country any good, so again we have to vote for who will screw it up the least. Without question it is Macain. We DON'T want or need the "change" that Obama is going to do. I have no respect for him at all. With him expect depression in the economy. He will tax us to death and gas will be $8.00 a gallon plus.

Posted by: Shelby on Aug 4, 2008 at 09:54 AM
Chaz - Newsflash - If you adjust the total dollar amount to align with the economy in the past, it is not the largest deficit in US history. You have to measure this deficit against the gross domestic product which is our economic output. The biggest deficits by far were after WWII which amounted to more than 30% of our economy. The Reagan administration and George Sr's GDP exceeded our current projected deficit. Still our current deficit makes me nervous since our next Pres will have to raise taxes to pay for it all. Just like Carter did. So exactly how is Obama going to save this country from itself? What is his "Plan?" His voting record and political history cannot be used as a source of info. We can use McCains. And don't use the info on his website. That is just propaganda.

To I will not vote for McCain or Obama: I don't see real differences between the two, either, but let's face reality - most people aren't that thoughtful and, let's be real, Obama is going to be President simply because it will feel good voting for the black guy. You see, white folks are extremely nice to minorities. Much much nicer than a minority would be to white folks if white folks were the minority. For you see, white folks, just like the minorities, feel that the minorities got the short end of the genetic stick, so in the spirit of being magnanimous, white folks are extra nice to them, and minorities pretend to be friends, but secretly resent white folks and, at the end of the day, will only be happy when white folks are either half or are less than half of the population; maybe not even then.

Hopefully people will wake up (probably not) and see that Obama is a wolf in sheep's clothing. I'll take a former POW any day (no matter what his age) over someone with absolutely no experience who thumbed his nose at our injured soldiers in Germany, is pro-abortion (including partial birth), wants to repeal the Marriage Act that makes marriage a sacred union between a man and woman, and who doesn't know the first thing about the economy or what it would take to improve it but will say anything people's "itching ears" want to hear just to get elected.

I'm sorry I can't afford to be a Republican. I don't need a guy that thinks he's entitled to the Presidency by being a POW. McCain has nothing to offer America. He's barely a step above Bush. And come to think of it, I think his stage presence is worse than Bush. I mean, thats not all I'm thinking of when voting, but our image abroad is definitely hurting us. Down with the Republicans!

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Aug 3, 2008 at 10:10 PM
Shelby, newsflash. The past 4 republican presidents have increased the size of teh federal government and run up almost 80% of the federal debt. GW created the largest expansion of the federal government in 50 years. The idea that the republican party is for small government and fiscal responsibility is flat out no longer true. Wake up! As for Clinton, I guess you forget the numerous attempts on Bin Laden's life that he authorized, once missing him by less than an hour. Or do they not mention the extremely high priority that he placed on terrorism on Fox? Or the fact that Bush said that they didn't view AlQuada as a real threat immediately after Bush took office despite tons of evidence and briefings to the contrary? Regardless, McCain has no new ideas, lives in a fantasy land where the US is still feared and respected by all and thus we have no need for diplomacy. I know I can't afford 4 more years of republicans taking my money and giving it to the corporations and the rich, let alone 8! As for the economy, we have the slowest growing economy among industrialized nations and our unemployment is growing faster than anyone elses. But keep the faith Larry! Also, please note, Bush isn't running again. Sort of...

Posted by: Chaz Location: South Bend on Aug 3, 2008 at 07:35 PM
Sam, Obama has said that the only taxes he'll raise are on those earning $250K or more. The average family will see a larger tax cut under Obama's plan than McCain's. As for socialist programs, why is it that they're all awful until you need them? Unemployment, Social Securiy, Medicaid, Medicare. etc. All socialist programs. Don't think you guys will be turning any of that money down. That military that keeps you safe? Socialist. Federal highways that you drive on? Socialist. But I urge all of you that hate them to not use them. Awful stuff I tell you. Send your checks back. And I'm sure Obama only schedules these meetings at times when you people can't attend. The rest of the time he's terrorizing your white women and kicking puppies. The people that go to see him can take time off of work. We're not stucj in a dead end job with no freedom. Lets slow down here folks...McCain has done this week. Who in their right mind would insult two celebs who have a fan base of several million, not all teens? I am a life Republican and McCain will not be getting my vote. You are really voting for his vice president because there is a good chance that he will not make it through a term with his health. He does not have the Foreign policy experience he says...he was a military officer who was not in a command position. I respect his service and great sacrifice to our country, but he is playing that card awful heavy that isn't there...then has the nerve to say Obama is playing the race card. There is no way Obama is going to say one thing about McCains policy experience. I am tired of the McCain slams. He slammed Obama for not visiting overseas, then wined the whole time he was over there drawing big crowds..he needs to make up his gourd. Dont started on the war..you can't win someting that isnt there to "win". It's time to go.

My choice is Bob Bare, that's choice C. But the 3rd choice never wins, so doesn't matter that much. Both Obama and McCain's economic plans would either put our nation in further debt, or just make us a poorer nation by taking all the money we do have with higher taxes. The U.S. can't create enough jobs that pay enough to support our cost of living. How can jobs be created if there is NO credit to create them? Within a year or so you'll see the Euro as the new world reserve currency. China will start to spread out to accomodate the lack of Females to Males, which will include bloodshed. Iran or Syria will be attacked. GREATER natural disasters will occur. Don't put your trust in the government, it will fail. Neither president can solve what is going to happen to our economy.

Posted by: Shelby on Aug 3, 2008 at 01:25 PM
Most certainly he will raise taxes. I read his "plan" on his website and he proposes health care for everyone, nearly free college education for all, funding for after school programs, veterans programs, infrastructure upgrades, a world anti poverty program and develop a nationalized police fully funded to exceed the funding of our military. Where is all this money coming from? There isn't enough money in the USA to pay for that. You think our debt is too large now. Just wait if Obama wins the election coupled with Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid in Congress....we all will be poor. Remember a big government can give you all sorts of things but can just as easily take it all away. Thomas Jefferson stated: "I place economy among the first and most important republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared. To preserve our independence, we must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt." A nd Obama will do just that.

All he did was ride into town, tell us "It's morning in America" and he won two landslides. Americans WANT an inspirational leader, someone who can lift us up and make Americans proud. Every year you have Republicans and others who try to tell you that Democrats will raise your taxes. It does not matter who the Democrat is, all you hear is he/she will "tax and spend". After eight years, don't you wish we had a President who "taxed" the corporations and "spent" money on America?

John McCain hasn't made a stop here but he does have relatives that live in the area. I am sure he probably doesn't want it advertised though. For all of the nay sayer democrats that bellyached about a sitting President visiting the area let's start the question back to them, who is going to pay for all of the security.

Have any of you actually read his book? I've read both his and Sen. McCain's. Check them out of your local library and decide for yourself.

Mb, Its not hate, I have no problem at all with the guy. He's probably a heck of a guy to be friends with. Its his politics arent in line with reality. actually READ the constitution one time and you will be a republican. It tells us that govt is not the answer to all of life's problems, we are the answer. Gov't is mainly the cause. BTW, whatever your opinion of George Bush, he is FAR more correct than obama or clinton ever would be. I am extremely disappointed in his lack of leadership when it comes to most issues, but our next option is mccain or obama, and I agree that neither one is great, but obama is sooo far off course that 40 yrs ago he could have run as a communist and won. Im not pushing mccain at all, but he's definitely the lesser of two evils once you've read the constitution.

Yeah he's doing this when most people are at work because he doesn't want to have to answer questions from the working class. We might want real answers with plausible solutions. And we're not as likely to get all caught up in his Obamamania. The only people he wants there are the easily manipulated zombies that get all excited because he "talks good". The ONLY thing he has to offer is his incredible speaking ability. Unfortunately that does nothing to solve our problems. It just gets a bunch of overexcited easily controlled liberals all fired up.

I believe McCain would have had a crowd 5 times as big as Obama did in Germany. In McCain case they would all be protesting and burning American flags. Funny when McCain entered the presidential race he was the one no one gave credit for he was the liberal republican conservative seems you guys forgot he was one of the main architects of the immigration reform bill now everybody forgot about that yes he did a complete flip flop on that. we would not have needed a surge in Iraq if we had not invaded that sovereign country in the first place there was no WMDS and no terrorist Obamas judgment on not invading was correct. All we need now is another 8 years of bush policies. And i love how McCain is using the troops for political gain saying Obama did not visit them meantime his commercial show him playing basketball with American soldiers what and idiot he also blames Obama for gas prices instead of blaming his republican buddies who where in charge for the 8 years.

mb... barack obama ain't our salvation. he's another peanut farmer. look at carter... not great on domestic and very weak on foreign policy. obama is going turn this country into the worst economic situation since the depression. read up on your history. we're going down the socialist road. the government shouldn't be all things to all people. obama is weak on nat'l defense, so was clinton and look what happened to our military. WE'RE PAYIN FOR IT NOW cuz a democratic who decided that socialist form of gov't was a better answer than our nat'l defense. mark my words... if obama is elected, he'll be out on four years cuz he's an inexperienced oaf who's going to get a lot of americans killed because he'd rather "talk" than send a rocket up some sheik's tail pipe.

it amazes me the amount of hate this man generates by some members of this country. everyone wants to bash him when we are 8 years into the worst presidential regime in history. people please take a look at your lives and ask yourself if you or anyone you know is in a better place than before bush was elected. time to wake up people: not everyone may like obama (i do, though), but he could hardly do worse than what we have now.

Obama-nation is coming to town--he knows if you've been naught or nice. Actually he is taking 1400 Monaco Employees on the road with him. They will fill positions as International Affairs Advisors. All unemployed people from other companies must submit applications and a picture to be considered for the three ring circus media event. No Experience Necessary!

Messiah! We are not worthy! Yes it will cost us. But that's Obama's entire platform, waste taxpayer money. Apparently he will solve the energy crisis by the tremendous speed of his flip-flops combined with his magnetic aura. At least, that's what the liberal media says.

This joke of a politician should just go back to Kenya and live with his relatives. He is phony from head to toe and hasn't a clue how to run a country.

This is going to cost us???? Blah blah blah more waste of OUR money..

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 2, 2008 at 01:35 PM

Wonder what Senator Barack "Flip Flop" Obama is going to flip on this time around. I know, he's going to promise those 1400 Monaco Coach people jobs by imposing a windfall tax on oil companies so it'll make gas cheaper and people can get their jobs back. It's a bunch of pig slop. Vote for a candidate who actually has a plan... oh wait, that means no one. Guess it's going to come down who's gulliable enough to buy into the candidates schtick.
