Monaco Coach is not only Elkhart County’s fifth largest employer; it is the ninth largest financial contributor to the Elkhart County chapter of the United Way.

“Between their corporate and employee gift, it was somewhere around $50-thousand that they gave last year,” said Jerome Quatman, United Way President.

The United Way annual report actually lists the figure at $58,500.

Dealing with the loss promises to be tough for a couple of reasons.

Not only does the charitable organization lose a major donor, it stands to gain clients as jobless Monaco workers potentially place extra demand on the types of community services that United Way helps provide.

Today at the Boys and Girls Club in Goshen, there were hundreds of children who had a positive place to go.

They were shooting pool, honing their artistic skills, and just hanging out with friends.

For them, the negative news at Monaco arguably couldn’t have come at a worse time.

“You know, Boys and Girls Club are in major throws of making an expansion into Elkhart where they have never been before,” said Quatman: “They’re going to do it in times that have been very very economically soft.”

The soft economy caused some genuine hard times last week, when Monaco Coach announced plans to close plants in Elkhart, Wakarusa, and Nappanee.

“Yeah we’re very concerned,” said Quatman. “Yeah we’re worried; yeah we’re not going to cancel the campaign.
We’re going to go out and do what we need to.”

After all, the Elkhart County United Way is still helping to fund some Salvation Army programs, despite losing a number one financial contributor in the not-so-distant past.

“Bayer, which was then Miles, actually was the largest employer in the county and they were great supporters for United Way. The single largest contributor that we had and over the years, to the point where this January, they ceased to have employees in Elkhart County,” said Quatman.

On the bright side, Keystone R.V. wasn’t even part of the United Way campaign six years ago.

Today, Keystone is the number one donor having contributed more than $300-thousand last year.

“We’re going to keep going we're going to do the best we can, we're going to have impact where we can have impact,” said Quatman.

Not all R.V. firms have been as generous as Monaco Coach.

While R.V. makers account for eight of Elkhart County’s top ten employers: of those eight, only two are on the top ten list of United Way donors.

I have to agree with Steve-o. When my company in South Bend was laying people off, United Way was still there asking for donations, but never a mention of any help to those of us that had already gotten our Warn Letters. It was mentioned that we could still contribute and they would take it out of our severance pay. Classless.

People, quit blaming it allon government. Monaco was losing money in good times,it is just a poorly managed company. Fuel prices definitely has had an effect on rv sales, the fact remains those poor workers that are losing their jobs don't need to write their congressmen they need to write to as many Monaco owners as possible to let them know that the company has displaced the people that made Monaco what it was. The product will suffer, the support will suffer, but as long as they can make a profit that is all Mr. Toolson cares about. Don't get me wrong the company needs to make money, but how many executives lost their job? The answer is none.So the people that put this company in the shape it is in today are still the ones making the decisions. BUYERS BEWARE!!!

Daniels brags about finding 2 jobs for every 1 lost. He best better get started because he needs to find at least 2000 jobs in Elk. Cty. alone.

Funny how they try to guilt trip and criticize all the other RV companies that aren't top contributors to United Way. There are plenty of other charities out there that these companies do donate to but I guess if you decide to help out anyone besides United Way then it doesn't count.

Anon @605, how long until you MAKE our leaders do something? How long before you demand it, how long before we all demand it and shut off american idol, and dancing with the blah blah blah? We are as much to blame as our 'leaders' we havent held them accountable, and that needs to change. We surely dont have a choice this presidential election, Obama will win, and he will apply the death blow to our wonderful country. It still seems funny to me that Mccain won the republican nomination, something just seems amiss there. Whatever, it is too late now, time to batten down the hatches and ride out the storm. Take care of eachother, that is where things get done, at grass roots levels, not this show that is our federal government. Know your neighbors, help your neighbors, be good human beings, and never ever trust your government. Think for yourselves, turn off your TV's, and for the love of god keep your powder dry.

Its kind of funny how United Way said they wont have enough money to help the people from Monaco that had donated money when they were working. What a rip-off

If you could afford to give to United Way, I can assure you that when you are down and out they won't help you. Been down and out and kicked to the curb. Do not support United Way.

Seriously, how many different stories can you have on the effect of M.C. leaving town. Has an employer ever closed their doors before. Enough already.

Just an FYI here - I was in Elkhart on Monday (7/21) and went to grab a quick workout at the local YMCA and I was told they do not offer day passes to Paying Customers. Now, as someone who use to be a member there - I found this to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of! Keep in mind, the YMCA will ask you for donations, etc. but they don't want paying customers. Keep this in mind the next time they have a fundraiser, if my money isn't any good - then nor should anyone else's be either! Note: I have never been to a gym/heath club that doesn't sell day passes. This includes gyms/health clubs from Europe to basically every city in the USA.

Some more ripple effect of the gas gauging! This is sad! How much more before our leaders do something?
