For about a week now, people have been making their way to the second largest county fair in the country.

All of the excitement is going on in Goshen.

For about 150 years, the Elkhart County Fair has caught peoples' attention for many reasons.

Kelsey,8, and Kara Anderson,10, do not know whether to look up, down, left or right while at the fair.

They aren't sure what to eat, what to see, or what to do.

Kelsey says, “I like it for the rides and the food.”

Kelsey and Kara say you need a couple of days to cover all the grounds.

Kara says, "We've eaten dinner and played a couple of the squirty games and stuff. We've done almost everything but rides so far."

The sisters still made sure their camera shy dad had some fun too.

Kara says, “We've seen our dad's friends, Jenn's sister, and her husband.”

They say the fair is a great place to socialize and even stand back and admire all the work done by local people in the 4-H program.

Kara says, “They put a lot of work into it and it kind of shows.”

Laurie Sula, Youth Development Extension Educator, says this year there are a record number of exhibits, over 5,300.

Sula says, “All different types of pictures, sewing, scrapbooks, almost anything we can think of we've got it here.”

Kelsey says, “I like the cakes and the dresses.”

Kara says, “If I made one of these things, I would want people to check it out because it must have taken a really long time.”

As they said, you can never spend too much time at a fair when there is just too much to check out.

The excitement also includes live music. On Wednesday night, Hootie and the Blowfish took the stage. Concerts, a rodeo, and demolition derby will take place over the weekend.

I would never go to a fair with my children. The people that work there are freaks. Take a good luck at them. Where have they been? Under a rock, in jail catching the "clap" in their trailer from the trash they pick up? Why would I want to put my safety in the hands of people like this? Why would I want to eat the food at these dirty nasty places? They can keep their elephant ears. Sooo Gross.

Well i can tell you the Orange County Fair does not have Elephant Ears - people there have never heard of them! But, they do have beer tents! I enjoyed some good Nelson's food last weekend - def. some good stuff!

Who can afford to go to the fair, they way over charge crap they have there and besides at the Elkart fair it is like going to little mexico who wants to take there family to a place full of non English non Americans who are riding this country for free anyways, we have enough of that by just taking a drive through Elkhart not alone going to the fair.

In this economy, we have to look for free things to do..the extra money will be spent on food, gas, and utilities..No room for luxuries at this point.

I'd like to know where the information thats its "the second largest county fair in the nation" comes from? Thats ABSOLUTLEY not true. Several county fairs in California number in the millions!

Don't go. The traffic is terrible. It took us over an hour just to park. Way over rated.

with the economy like it is a trip to the fair may serve as vacation for alot of people.true if the money isnt there it isnt there but 50-60 bux for a fair trip or several hundred for a 1 day trip somewhere -one seems a bit more realistic than the other even in a crumbing economy.after all an 8 dollar gate fee isnt so far off from what many of the local things such as the zoo costs.even dirt poor people deserve a little break

Hey "saver" - some of us cannot take our kids on vacation, so we'll give them 1 day of fun at the fair - are all these people making these kinds of comments jealous dinks who couldn't get into a factory or what - i sense a lot of hostility towards families who made their living this way from these comments. maybe you should save for a rainy day for when the "Butt Hole" industry finally goes under and you loose your job! i love these forums!!!

Who has money to go to a fair????

Posted by: Saver on Jul 24, 2008 at 09:44 AM
Well, how many people went to the fair and spent money they should be saving for a rainy day? All those RV people who have lost or will lose job should not be at the fair wasting money. Where are your priorities?

I would love to take time to go the fair. I could afford to spend between $10.00-$20.00, however, with an $8.00 admission charge (same with St. Joseph County)I might as well not go because that almost depletes what I can afford to spend. I have heard several people fairly recently make the same or similar comments.
