SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Charges were filed today against Brian McNeill, 29, in the stabbing death of Matthew Mitchell.

South Bend Police were called out Friday, shortly after 3:00 a.m., in response to a deceased individual in a home on the 500-block of Rush Street in South Bend, near the Karl King Riverbend Tower.

St. Joseph County Metro Homicide took over the investigation because of the nature of the death.

Dispatchers initially reported it as a stabbing, but authorities did not immediately confirm the cause of death.

After talking to the family, CMHU positively identified the victim as 27-year-old Matthew Mitchell.

His autopsy was completed Friday morning, and the forensic pathologist found the cause of death to be "trauma and blood loss associated with a stabbing."

His death has been ruled a homicide.

Brian McNeill, 29, was charged Friday with voluntary manslaughter, a class A felony. Bond was set at $1,000,000.

McNeill is currently in the custody of the St. Joseph County Jail.

A man who witnessed the incident said that Mitchell and McNeill were involved in a physical confrontation and "struck each other repeatedly" before the stabbing took place.
