Police have arrested a suspect in a shooting Saturday morning in Elkhart that left one man dead. On Monday, investigators determined they have enough evidence to charge a suspect in the case.

It happened in the 2800 block of Toledo Road at the Deer Creeke Apartments around 1:30 a.m.

Police say Matthew Bark, 24, and Terry L. Sheets, Jr., 26, both of Elkhart, were arguing when shots were fired inside an apartment.

"There were two male individuals that had gotten into some type of argument. They had been drinking," said Captain Jim Bradberry of the Elkhart County Sheriff's Department.

"With all investigations we want to find out from all parties who might have been there, so we need to find out who is all there, and get statements and look at evidence and come to some kind of determination of what really happened here," said Capt. Bradberry, "It's too early at this point to speculate as to why shots were fired. Again, we're going to look into that."

Bark was taken to Memorial Hospital and later died from his injuries.

Sheets, Jr. was arrested for murder and is currently being held at the Elkhart County Corrections Center.

While Bark was the only victim in Saturday's shooting, the family that lives next door had a close call.

A bullet made it through the apartment walls and into a 14-year-old's bedroom. A large hole in the teen's mattress shows where the bullet ended up as she was sleeping.

That family, along with other residents, said they plan on moving out.

Chelsea Henderson lives just two doors down from the shooting scene.

" We are moving out," Henderson said. "We were already in the process of moving but we are trying to get things sped up as quickly as possible."

Mark Searcy said this kind of incident is rare at the apartment complex.

"I'm hoping this was an isolated incident," he said. "For the most part, I just worry about the safety of my kids, which before was never an issue."

The administration at the Deer Creeke apartments sent residents a notice explaining what happened on the property and ensuring them that it was an isolated incident.

An initial hearing for Sheets has been scheduled for Thursday at 8:30 a.m.
