Staff Sergeant James Snyder's name was the 305th to be added to the Kosciusko County War Memorial on the same day America celebrates its independence.
"We wish we didn't have to add another name to this wall. But unfortunately, we do. And every time we come out here it grieves our hearts that we have to add another name," says Ken Locke, who organized the event.
"Liberty comes with a price. It started with the American revolution and it's gone on since then. Thousands of Americans have given their lives for us to have the freedoms that we have today and we need to be reminded of that on a daily basis," Locke adds.
James Snyder leaves behind a wife, his mother, three children, brothers and sisters. He grew up in Syracuse and had lived in Nappanee.
Snyder was hit by a roadside bomb in January. He died in May. This was his third tour of duty in Iraq. Snyder also served in the Gulf War.
Snyder's family joins together to honor their fallen soldier. Snyder is the 305th name to be etched on the wall of the memorial, the third to die in Iraq.
"Jim. He was a very special person. He loved people. He loved his country," James' mother, Donna Snyder, shares with us after the ceremony. "I am so proud of him. He gave his life for our country."
