Person of interest identified in Elkhart shooting

One man remains in critical condition and another is dead as the search continues for suspects in an Elkhart shooting.

It happened early Tuesday morning in an apartment building in the 200-block of Jackson, near the downtown area.

An officer found 31-year-old Craig Smith shot to death on the third floor.

A second victim was found shot in the parking lot. On Wednesday that victim was identified as 32-year-old Varnell Dixon.

Dixon is still in critical condition at the hospital.

Tenants say neither of the victims lived in the building, and that Smith was visiting family for a funeral.

Police are currently searching for 27-year-old Phillip Powe in connection to the shooting.

He’s 5-feet, 5-inches tall and weighs approximately 150 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes, as well as a tattoo on his left arm that has “Lil” and one on his right arm that says “Phill.”

Officials say they believe Powe was present during the shooting and may have even been injured.

If you have any information on Powe, you are asked to call the Elkhart Police at 574-295-7076.
