New Buffalo Township will not be home to a new strip club.
Tuesday night the township's planning commission said no to the proposed "gentleman's club" on m-239, near the four winds casino.
The township recently passed an ordinance forcing any possible club to be built 1,000 feet from schools, churches, or residential lands. The club's developer, Chicago-based NOI, tried to get their proposal passed under the old ordinance, and said they would comply with restrictions laid out by the commission.
Even using guidelines from the old ordinance, the commission denied the plan.
After they took their vote, commission members said their decision was made partly because the community was so vocal in their opposition to the plan.
During the public hearing section of the meeting, everyone spoke in opposition to the plan.
”There are very few gentlemen appearing at gentleman’s clubs,” Jay Manley told the commission.
“This business has been shown in study after study to increase in sexually transmitted diseases and infections,” Valerie Maguire, a physician and area resident said.
The attorney for NOI says they don’t know what their next step will be. A lengthy motion was prepared and printed out exacting the commission’s reasons for saying no to the establishment.
He says they’ll look at what the commission put together, and determine where to go from here.
