Elkhart Police investigate homicide at apartment building

Elkhart Police are investigating an early morning homicide that happened at an apartment building downtown.

Police were called out around 4 a.m.

An officer found 31-year-old Craig Smith shot to death on the third floor and another man seriously injured in the parking lot.

Police have yet to determine how many were involved in the shooting and who is responsible.

Tenants say the victim didn't live in the building but was visiting family for a funeral.

“One of the family members I was talking to I was consoling... he said I just lost my mom two days ago now I just lost my brother,” says one tenant James Ammons.

“As far as the gunshots themselves.. I didn't see the guy shooting but I heard the gunshots themselves which was enough for me to call 911,” says another tenant Michael Casey.

The victim is in critical condition at Elkhart General Hospital.

His name has yet to be released until his family is notified.

Police say in the past year there have 185 calls for service from that apartment building.

There at 16 units in the building.
