2 local soldiers return home, surprised by family

Two soldiers returned home from Kuwait Thursday, at the South Bend Regional Airport. The men were surprised to find dozens of family members and friends waiting to welcome them home.

Sergeant David Monsivais and Chief Warrant Officer Shawn Waldron, were welcomed back after a 10-month deployment.

Sergeant Monsivais was greeted by his 14-month-old son, David, his wife, Kim, and several other family members. Chief Warrant Officer, Shawn Waldron was welcomed by his wife, Melissa, his sisters, nieces and nephews, and many colleagues from the Mishawaka Fire Department. And it was those co-workers who helped organize the surprise gathering.

"Lots of guys participated in this, to spearhead this little organization. Getting guys here on and off duty, getting fire trucks, getting police cars, working with Shawn's wife to make sure we could come here and celebrate and show how proud we are of him," said Captain Brian Linson of the Mishawaka Fire Department.

All who gathered to celebrate the soldiers' homecoming were overjoyed to see their loved ones. Both men will return to work and expressed obvious joy to be home.

"The people getting off the plane were taking a little too long, I was about ready to push people around to get out of here," Sergeant Monsivais said laughing. "I really miss my son, that's the first thing I saw, and I was really happy to see him again."
