Another day, another record high.

We're all tired of seeing it, hearing it, and paying for it.

Gas prices jumped to $4.19 a gallon in Michiana.

That's almost 20 cents higher than the national average.

If you were at the right place at the right time Thursday, you may have seen some relief -- relief that, just months ago, we would've called outrageous.

Drivers in Michiana tell Newscenter 16 they’re spending between 240 and 360 dollars a month on gas. Many double that number when factoring in their significant other.

Mike Kmitta saw the sign at Phillips 66 in Roseland and had to stop. It says $4.18 a gallon, but if you pay cash it's $4.14 a gallon.

Kmitta says, “I pay cash, so it’s good for me. A lot of people use credit cards.”

Ani Ikene does, but says, “Gas should be the same price whether you pay cash or debit.”

One driver said, “What can we do about it?”

If you drove about three miles up the road into Niles, Michigan, it was your lucky day at Walmart's pumps.

Marla Stephenson says, “I was excited when I saw $3.98.”

Next to her, Katherine Maddox says, “That's not cool at all. It really has affected my life. I don't get paid much . I'm a waitress, so I only make $2.13 an hour plus tips. That's not good. How am I supposed to pay for gas when I don't make enough tips?”

The word “tip” is what's getting all these drivers through a rough time -- tips on budgeting.

Kmitta says, “My wife has a car, so we'll use that. She gets a lot better gas mileage. We use that for driving around.”

SUV drivers are idiots - they are getting what they deserve

Posted by: TT Location: Mishawaka on Jun 20, 2008 at 02:01 PM
I have said this before and I will say it again. It was all a set up. Look at how merchandising, and the media PUSHED Suv'S, Trucks, and larger vehicles, on people who will never haul hay, chickens, horses, never live on a mountain, or even a hill for that matter, but its stylish and looks good. Gas was a little more affordable than, so spending 30 bucks to fill up a tank wasn't that bad. BUT ooooh lookie here now with the tanks taking up 200 bucks plus a month or more..and those wyners with the boats, SELL THEM, to fill up the Pick up hauling it. Or take up fishing to pay for the gas. I have seen more SUV's, trucks, and larger vehicles for sale now more than ever. Shows, sometimes you have to look ahead instead of right now.

Folks - Keep in mind that the DOLLAR is worth a lot less than it was 5-10 years ago! Why?!? Well, a lot of Ameicans didn't you any common sense when spending and signing on the dotted line. Bush is not responsible nor is the government to make sure people make sound deicisons. Thus, not we're all paying for the poor decisions with high gas prices and a slumping economy. We need less government, less social programs, and more tax breaks for business and breaks for stores selling American goods to drive Wal-Mart out of town! AND, we need to stop the bleeding at our borders immediately; period! Funny, border security isn't even an issue right now in the election - everyone is too worried about building themselves up. Common sense people - please encourage everyone to just use common sense!

Posted by: Matt Location: Nappanee on Jun 20, 2008 at 01:21 PM
To Julie- Keep in mind Bush pushed for tax breaks for buisness - Democrats want to eliminate them. Look in the the 10 years how much is being outsourced - Americans are driving that - not the President - we want it cheap and we want it now. Meaning, we put it on credit and can't pay our bills now - that is not any president's fault - remember - Clinton pushed NAFTA through - Please have a clue what you're talking about before you make rediculous statements about your husband's glass factory.

bottom line is. this is BS. When you spend more a month on fuel than you do for your house payment, something has to be terribly wrong.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 19, 2008 at 10:06 PM
Wonder when the riots will start over rising fuel costs which affects the cost of the rapidly growing price of food.

Posted by: Willie Location: Niles on Jun 19, 2008 at 11:50 AM
How about Congressional Dems poo-pooing Bush's recent request to lift the offshore drilling ban??? Good thing we voted for "change" in 2006; we certainly got it. I was paying low $2's for gas back then......

If only it was that simple, Drill.

Posted by: Drill In America Location: Mishawaka on Jun 18, 2008 at 03:00 PM
The way I see it, we need to do several different things and we need to do them all at once. First, open drilling back up in the U.S. At the same time, we take 10% of the profits from the oil companies to invest in alternative fuel research. In addition, we put our refineries to the max output and do away with some strigent EPA standards. (This means all you Sierra Nutjobs back off BP in Whiting.) We pressure the spectulators to "research" what they're speculating about and spank them with taxes if they get too greedy. We force China and India to curb their usuage. We need to do all this at the same time. No matter what we do---be it drilling or alternative fuel research, it'll take time to implement to have an effect. At the same time, we a society need to think long and hard about our consumption. And the last thing: DRILL, DRILL, DRILL, DRILL. We need to get off the foreign dependency. If we get alt fuel and our own oil, problem is solved. Who's with me?

RIGHT ON FARMER FRANK...WE ARE A SPOILED NATION AND WE WANT EVERYTHING FOR FREE! A LOT OF US ARE JEALOUS OF THE OTHERS BUT ARE NOT WILLING TO PUT ANY EFFORT TO MAKE CHANGES! MAYBE INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING WE NEED TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS...LIKE DRILLING IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!

mike on june 17 2008 @12:00pm, you need to read ING's comment a little closer. he/she is saying the same thing you are.

Hey WNDU why not make a site to blog about others blogs ? but until then oh well ?? I only hope the gas prices are not indicative of our # of DEAD soldiers 4000 DEAD 4.00 per gallon .... 5000 DEAD 5.00 per gallon .... 6000 DEAD 6.00 per gallon ... God help us Please !

Posted by: Tracy Location: Granger on Jun 17, 2008 at 03:46 PM
To Daniel from Granger: We actually thought about buying oil stock but don't have the heart to make money off of something that is ruining other's lives. Obviously you don't have a heart!

to ing!!!! You are a complete idiot. You expect anyone to believe you when you say you make under 10k a year and all the bills you claim you have. I'll bet you live in section 8 and everyone commenting here pays your rent. Lets hope no one ever finds out who you are with comments like that. If they do lets hope they spit in your food. What do you do for 10k a year. Loser sounds like your the one that needs to go back to school and get a better job. How many kids do you have? How much welfare is that. You're an idiot and will always be. Also duh you should put your name on here. I thought you spoke your mind!!!! Behind a computer!!!!! Your just one of those internet people that love to live a different life on the computer. get a life idiot!!!!

We overspent and charged our lives away in the irrationally exhuberant '90's and now we're paying for it. And it's not the only Clinton-era mistake we're paying for these days. Farmer Frank has some good points about specialization and being spoiled...

I drive the Company truck to Griffin, In -Mon-Thurs and the prices in that area ran $4.03 cent per gallon for almost two weeks while ours was running $3.93. As of last night theirs are running $4.01 and ours is still at $4.15. Word of advise...if the SB Tribune runs an article about gas prices going up, get you car filled ASAP as early as you can. The last five times the Trib ran an article the gas prices went up 10-20 cents per gallon. Sometimes I wish they just keep it to themselves. It does seem to me that the gas companies feel they can stick it to the So Bend public because they have been warned by the press. Its also amazing that all the stations have the same price , maybe 1 cent different. I fill up the Company truck everyday I work and I keep close eye on who has the cheapest gas prices and they all stay the same in most areas of South Bend. Exception: the corner of 23 and Ironwood is always higher than any other parts of the city that I have found.

Posted by: Myrt on Jun 17, 2008 at 09:40 AM
Dee: I caught your sarcasm; AZ from Goshen needed to learn that NASCAR developes safety, environmental, and gas saving features that we use today. They work with the automotive companies to make our cars better. It is more than just running around in circles.

So homosexuality is immorral? Go back to your bible thumping church and keep learning and believing in myths and fairytales while the rest of the world lives in the now and for each other. What's next, Frankie boy? You gonna tell us that the world is only 6000 years old?

Posted by: Rich Location: Granger on Jun 17, 2008 at 07:07 AM
Higher gas prices from one region to the next are driven by demand. When demand is high and supply is "low" as some might think, the prices are elevated to stymie the demand. Hence why diesel, a lower grade combustible fuel vs petro, is even higher; because of the demand for it. The gay marriage/illegal immigrants comment belong in other topics falling under the Political Correctness category which has been causing the masses to shake their heads in disbelief for quite some time now.

Posted by: Dee Location: Plymouth on Jun 17, 2008 at 06:35 AM
I was trying to be sarcastic with the NASCAR remark. Actually, I am a rabid NASCAR fan. I just thought it was kind of silly to ban it. All that fuel is paid for by the sponsors and fans that attend the races and purchase the tee shirts and the rest of the stuff. It has nothing to do with what you and I pay...trying to be funny and failed, evidently.

Posted by: Farmer Frank Location: Rural Marshall County on Jun 17, 2008 at 04:12 AM
the gay marriage comment relates to the continued breakdown of any base of morals in our society. If that comment hit home with you , so be it. the road to the west leads to california, happy travels.

Posted by: mit Location: City of Lost Angels on Jun 17, 2008 at 02:36 AM
I livein Los Angeles and I paid $4.67 for a gallon of gas. I know the National average is lower than what you pay, but I will trade you any way

Posted by: So confused Location: South Bend on Jun 16, 2008 at 10:00 PM
Wait a second Farmer Frank..what exactly does gay marriage have to do with higher gas prices? Give me a break!

Posted by: Gary Location: Granger on Jun 16, 2008 at 08:47 PM
This is ridiculous. I went to Burlington, Iowa this past weekend. Flood torn areas, and the gas there was $3.81. It was $3.96 over in "the region" in the Hammond area right off the toll road next to I80. Why are we paying some of the highest prices in the country?

Posted by: Tony Location: SB on Jun 16, 2008 at 07:36 PM
What the hell does gay marriage have to do with gas prices, you inbred fool.

Posted by: Paul Location: Indiana on Jun 16, 2008 at 05:17 PM
I too want to know why Indiana gas is priced so much higher than the national average. I know that a suspension in the gas tax does not produce that much per person but when you are filling up a diesel tank at nearly $5.00 per gallon that extra cash most certainly will help.

Posted by: Student Location: Indiana on Jun 16, 2008 at 04:31 PM
I feel like I leaned over and touched my toes and there's a gas hose out of my rear!

Posted by: steve Location: goshen on Jun 16, 2008 at 03:39 PM
The big question is why are we 20 cents higher than in Wisconsin, when they have a 14 cent higher gas tax??? can you say we are getting taken!!!!!!

Posted by: Myrt on Jun 16, 2008 at 01:26 PM
To Slade: Just watch Dale, Jr., he knows how to conserve gas! For those against NASCAR, where do you think all of our safety features on vehicles came from? Most of our vehicles have improvements made which were developed by NASCAR. Also, the U.K. pays more for gas because the taxes on the gas also pays for their health insurance. That is part of the reason why gas is much more expensive over there. Also, driving over there is a privilege - if you are getting your license for the 1st time, you get "learner" plates -screw up with learner plates and you walk!!

Please America keep buying SUVs and using more gasoline, I need the money...I now want 2 diamond studded Mercedes Benz instead of just one.

All this BS makes me relish in the fact that we've become a nation of specialists. Noone grows a garden/ makes maple syrup/ butchers/ cans food/ does anything to provide for themselves outside of trying to earn a paycheck. We all want to go faster/ have the best roads, fanciest vehicles and do no manual labor. A good lesson is probably what we really need. We've become a nation of spoiled people. Like most things, you only get out of it what you put in to it.....so, keep supporting gay marriage/ illegal immigration/ and big oil, and you'll get what you so richly deserve.....one heck of a good lesson. Come on Michiana, lets come up w some ideas on how to save fuel/ economize/ prioritize our lives in the right areas. This country was built on ingenuity and hard work, whenever we get back to that , things will improve......I can hardly wait....

Posted by: mike Location: elkhart on Jun 16, 2008 at 08:32 AM
I think you folks need to give credit where it is due. The biggest reason that oil prices are up, is due to the lovely criminal federal reserve driving the value of the dollar down by cutting interest rates. We are being destroyed by design, you have all waited too long and now we are screwed. American Idol will still be on next year though, so just go back to sleep until that comes back on. Sheep.

Posted by: Rabid Irish Fan Location: Vaselineville, USA on Jun 16, 2008 at 07:24 AM
Daniel Greed = Higher pump prices for the majority. I hope you sleep good at night, knowing you are part of the problem. Thanks, I commute to work and this is killing my pocketbook, thanks again. Duh! You live on less than 150.00 a week after taxes, right. Live with your mom and pop? If you fill your pollution machines every week that has got to be over 150.00 a week. You travel for a living, so you write a fair share of your fuel and travel off at tax time. We need to pay our dues, no, we need to quit getting bent over the gas pumps by other greedy AMERICANS who are only out to make a profit. Furthermore, who are you to tell anyone to get a real job. The waitress is trying to make a living, cheap people like you probably would not leave a tip. The job market sucks right now, I need a part time job to make ends meet and I can't find one. I spend 100 a week just to get to work, if I could bike, I would. 45 miles each way, can't do it. Ease up and be happy you have money, good for you.

Posted by: Dee Location: Plymouth on Jun 16, 2008 at 06:56 AM
Ban NASCAR...that is simply the most inane statement I have ever heard. Yes, let's ban NASCAR, ARCA, Indy racing, the dragsters, the motorcycles, dune buggys and golf carts...Sure! That will solve everything! Why didn't we think of this before?!

Posted by: Connie Location: Warsaw on Jun 15, 2008 at 11:36 PM
Some of these comments are good for a real belly laugh! In others, the lack of thought and logic is rather frightening. For instance, the idiot who thinks we all bought SUV's because we like buying gas...since our car died,(as in- not moving), and since we aren't one of those "wealthy" folks and had no money after dealing with job losses/illness, we had to buy whatever car was available for the money we had. And,since the "rich" folks have been glutting on SUV's for decades, that's what is available in our price range. It will be ten years before the used car market will satisfy your nosiness. So, although it hurts to fill the tank, I drive an SUV. Turns out, it actually gets better mileage than the import compact that died. And, if the gas prices are too high, someone forgot to tell my neighbors. They burn gas constantly just riding in circles around the yard on their bikes/toys. Prices will rise to whatever we willingly pay, and playing with it implies it hasn't hit the top yet.

Posted by: Travis Location: Chicago on Jun 15, 2008 at 09:59 PM
‘Duh!’, please do not tell others to get an education when you do not understand the difference between an and a, yourself. Besides, if you are making less than 10K maybe you need the real job and more importantly, education.

Posted by: bw Location: Mishawaka on Jun 15, 2008 at 05:02 PM
I'm curious as to Why ours is that much higher than the national average. Too bad the article doesn't give a little perspective on that.

Posted by: ING Location: mi on Jun 15, 2008 at 03:54 PM
to duh again: you must me a lot more stupid than i thought. 7-9 dollars a gallon? what the ?!@# is wrong with you? if you can afford to fill up 2 suv's a week on less than 10k a year, either you have someone helping you that you haven't mentioned, or you have income that the government does not tax. americans pay mor tax on EVERYTHING that we do on a daily basis than england or europe or any other nation. we also pay for our own healtcare. i can only imagine what you do for a living you moron!

Posted by: Ronny Location: SB on Jun 15, 2008 at 12:47 PM
Todd, you are obfuscating the truth. Our government has the ability and has had the ability to subsidize and fund alternative sources of energy and has not. Don't blame poor people for somthing rich people do. England pays more because they do not use as much as we do; buy more sell for less. As the information age takes hold more and more Americans are becoming informed to our goverment's neglegence. Like JC said corruption and incompetence.

Posted by: Pat Location: Plymouth on Jun 15, 2008 at 12:34 PM
I drive a diesel truck and have been paying between $4.69 to as much as $4.99 a gallon. I have livestock and those of you who are criticizing us who drive trucks and SUV's....are you enjoying that hamburger or steak that you grilled for dinner? How do you think that part of the cow got to your plate?

Posted by: Slade Location: Mishawaka on Jun 15, 2008 at 12:23 PM
I'd like to make a comment on this subject, but its time to watch NASCAR. Now those are the guys that really know how to conserve fuel.

Posted by: Shelby Location: Plymouth on Jun 15, 2008 at 12:19 PM
Has anyone heard the recent news that the Saudi's are going to start pumping from a newly drilled well that will produce nearly 500,000 barrels a day? USA uses about 11.1 million barrels per day. This will most certainly bring the supply closer to the demand thus lowering the price at the pump. Now those of you who are quick to point fingers...who visited the Arab Oil minister just last month? And the press said he failed...it was our President. Do you really think this increase in oil production and our Presidents visit is coincidental? He is more competent than the press gives him credit for and most of you believe what the press throws at us. Try making your own opinions based on facts from non-USA news and not believe all of what NBC feeds you.

Posted by: FORMER REPUBLICAN Location: NAPPPANEE on Jun 15, 2008 at 04:24 AM
come on people get behind your president who insists that rising oil prices is a product of a free enterprize.Would mr. Bush lie to you.He has spent a half a trillion dollars in one year on a country that had peace.Soon you idle will retire to his multi million dollar ranch with his millions and free medical for life something we cant afford to buy.Nine and a half trillion dollars in the red I dont think even stilling the social security and ending all the welfare for the children of this country is going to help finance our night's in shining armor war. Those darn DEMOCRATS>

Posted by: KR Location: Elkhart on Jun 14, 2008 at 10:48 PM
AHHHH! I don't care who is to blame! I just want to be able to buy food and pay my house payment. It won't change.

Posted by: JC Location: SB on Jun 14, 2008 at 08:47 PM
Our government saw this coming and did nothing to subsidize solar panels for homes and electric vehicles to drive. Our government is CORRUPT AND INCOMPETENT and has been for a long time DEMS AND REPUBS!!!

Posted by: Todd Location: South Bend on Jun 14, 2008 at 08:01 PM
Why are you guys so irogant to believe it is all the Presidents fault? Answer this..why does England pay more then we do? We are the ones to blame. President Bush didn't make your family buy an SUV or a car for every member of your family. We did it to ourselves and it is finally catching up to us. Other countries have been paying these kind of prices for years. It has absolutely nothing to do with our President or really Republicans or Democrats at all! Any politician campaigning on the promise that they will fine gas companies is an idiot. The cost will just get passed back to us and prices will go up even more. There are two main problems I see...1. We use gas like it is water in the US. 2. The commodity buyers have found a way to make good money at our expense while the gas companies take the blame...brilliant. They do it all the time in the beef and ag market. That is who needs to be stopped.

Posted by: Denise Location: South Bend on Jun 14, 2008 at 05:35 PM
Justin...Oilman Bush and his greedy oilman cronies are to blame not Pelosi. I give up, there has to be something in the water out here.

hay j out of mishawaka the congress and the house of reps is ran by democrats and they have more power over the country then bush believe it our not. before we voted in nancy polosi our economy was good. we vote her and bunch of other democrats in now look where that got us.

I think it is amazing how totally unfeeling, opinionated and downright snobbish some of the commenters are. But these snobs are NOT the super-rich and they are just as vulnerable as the rest of us. Sorry, Knollwood is NOTHING compared to Beverly Hills or Bel-Aire in California. Daniel, you are big fat fish in a little pond, that's all. So you own a SUV-big deal. You don't have a limo or your own jet-you are nothing and you could fall like the rest of us. The only difference is we've learn to survive and help each other. With your attitude, you might just have to go it alone.

Tom, what do you mean I misunderestimate my customers?

Posted by: brenda Location: bremen on Jun 14, 2008 at 02:51 AM
don't buy anything at the gas station but gas. Let's all stay home on sunday. That will give us family time and put a dent in the economy with one day off. Greed has changed so many things. Way back in the day nothing was open on Sunday. Now most business owners wouldn't want to miss out on one day worth of profits. We all need to stick together and do some price gouging ourselves.

Posted by: Daniel Location: Granger on Jun 13, 2008 at 09:23 PM
I am glad that these oil prices are going up! Last year the profits from my oil stocks paid off my SUV, this year they paid off my boat, my slip rental at St. Joe, my dues to the Summit Club and also my dues to Knollwood. If my oil stock profits keep increasing at the rate they are now, Next year I'll be able to trade in my 2005 SUV and buy a new 2009 SUV with cash!
