Another day, another record high.

We're all tired of seeing it, hearing it, and paying for it.

Gas prices jumped to $4.19 a gallon in Michiana.

That's almost 20 cents higher than the national average.

If you were at the right place at the right time Thursday, you may have seen some relief -- relief that, just months ago, we would've called outrageous.

Drivers in Michiana tell Newscenter 16 they’re spending between 240 and 360 dollars a month on gas. Many double that number when factoring in their significant other.

Mike Kmitta saw the sign at Phillips 66 in Roseland and had to stop. It says $4.18 a gallon, but if you pay cash it's $4.14 a gallon.

Kmitta says, “I pay cash, so it’s good for me. A lot of people use credit cards.”

Ani Ikene does, but says, “Gas should be the same price whether you pay cash or debit.”

One driver said, “What can we do about it?”

If you drove about three miles up the road into Niles, Michigan, it was your lucky day at Walmart's pumps.

Marla Stephenson says, “I was excited when I saw $3.98.”

Next to her, Katherine Maddox says, “That's not cool at all. It really has affected my life. I don't get paid much . I'm a waitress, so I only make $2.13 an hour plus tips. That's not good. How am I supposed to pay for gas when I don't make enough tips?”

The word “tip” is what's getting all these drivers through a rough time -- tips on budgeting.

Kmitta says, “My wife has a car, so we'll use that. She gets a lot better gas mileage. We use that for driving around.”

Oil per barrel is currently at $91.00, however oil companies are currently gouging the consumers to again make record profits. We are close to 2007 prices for oil, yet gas remains over $4.00 per gallon at most stations. I have personally reported several stations/companies for price gouging at the federal website http://gaswatch.energy.gov/. If more consumers were to do this, there will hopefully more action from authorities.

Just yesterday, September 12th, gas was $3.99 a gallon at both of our local gas stations. Knoll Bros. is still at $3.99 a gallon but Citgo's price jump to $4.39 a gallon overnight. Who's taking advantage of Hurricane Ike?

SUV drivers are idiots - they are getting what they deserve

Posted by: TT Location: Mishawaka on Jun 20, 2008 at 03:01 PM
I have said this before and I will say it again. It was all a set up. Look at how merchandising, and the media PUSHED Suv'S, Trucks, and larger vehicles, on people who will never haul hay, chickens, horses, never live on a mountain, or even a hill for that matter, but its stylish and looks good. Gas was a little more affordable than, so spending 30 bucks to fill up a tank wasn't that bad. BUT ooooh lookie here now with the tanks taking up 200 bucks plus a month or more..and those wyners with the boats, SELL THEM, to fill up the Pick up hauling it. Or take up fishing to pay for the gas. I have seen more SUV's, trucks, and larger vehicles for sale now more than ever. Shows, sometimes you have to look ahead instead of right now.

Folks - Keep in mind that the DOLLAR is worth a lot less than it was 5-10 years ago! Why?!? Well, a lot of Ameicans didn't you any common sense when spending and signing on the dotted line. Bush is not responsible nor is the government to make sure people make sound deicisons. Thus, not we're all paying for the poor decisions with high gas prices and a slumping economy. We need less government, less social programs, and more tax breaks for business and breaks for stores selling American goods to drive Wal-Mart out of town! AND, we need to stop the bleeding at our borders immediately; period! Funny, border security isn't even an issue right now in the election - everyone is too worried about building themselves up. Common sense people - please encourage everyone to just use common sense!

Posted by: Matt Location: Nappanee on Jun 20, 2008 at 02:21 PM
To Julie- Keep in mind Bush pushed for tax breaks for buisness - Democrats want to eliminate them. Look in the the 10 years how much is being outsourced - Americans are driving that - not the President - we want it cheap and we want it now. Meaning, we put it on credit and can't pay our bills now - that is not any president's fault - remember - Clinton pushed NAFTA through - Please have a clue what you're talking about before you make rediculous statements about your husband's glass factory.

bottom line is. this is BS. When you spend more a month on fuel than you do for your house payment, something has to be terribly wrong.

Wonder when the riots will start over rising fuel costs which affects the cost of the rapidly growing price of food.

How about Congressional Dems poo-pooing Bush's recent request to lift the offshore drilling ban??? Good thing we voted for "change" in 2006; we certainly got it. I was paying low $2's for gas back then......

If only it was that simple, Drill.

Posted by: Drill In America Location: Mishawaka on Jun 18, 2008 at 04:00 PM
The way I see it, we need to do several different things and we need to do them all at once. First, open drilling back up in the U.S. At the same time, we take 10% of the profits from the oil companies to invest in alternative fuel research. In addition, we put our refineries to the max output and do away with some strigent EPA standards. (This means all you Sierra Nutjobs back off BP in Whiting.) We pressure the spectulators to "research" what they're speculating about and spank them with taxes if they get too greedy. We force China and India to curb their usuage. We need to do all this at the same time. No matter what we do---be it drilling or alternative fuel research, it'll take time to implement to have an effect. At the same time, we a society need to think long and hard about our consumption. And the last thing: DRILL, DRILL, DRILL, DRILL. We need to get off the foreign dependency. If we get alt fuel and our own oil, problem is solved. Who's with me?

RIGHT ON FARMER FRANK...WE ARE A SPOILED NATION AND WE WANT EVERYTHING FOR FREE! A LOT OF US ARE JEALOUS OF THE OTHERS BUT ARE NOT WILLING TO PUT ANY EFFORT TO MAKE CHANGES! MAYBE INSTEAD OF COMPLAINING WE NEED TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS...LIKE DRILLING IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!

to ing!!!! You are a complete idiot. You expect anyone to believe you when you say you make under 10k a year and all the bills you claim you have. I'll bet you live in section 8 and everyone commenting here pays your rent. Lets hope no one ever finds out who you are with comments like that. If they do lets hope they spit in your food. What do you do for 10k a year. Loser sounds like your the one that needs to go back to school and get a better job. How many kids do you have? How much welfare is that. You're an idiot and will always be. Also duh you should put your name on here. I thought you spoke your mind!!!! Behind a computer!!!!! We overspent and charged our lives away in the irrationally exhuberant '90's and now we're paying for it. And it's not the only Clinton-era mistake we're paying for these days. Farmer Frank has some good points about specialization and being spoiled...

I drive the Company truck to Griffin, In -Mon-Thurs and the prices in that area ran $4.03 cent per gallon for almost two weeks while ours was running $3.93. As of last night theirs are running $4.01 and ours is still at $4.15. Word of advise...if the SB Tribune runs an article about gas prices going up, get you car filled ASAP as early as you can. The last five times the Trib ran an article the gas prices went up 10-20 cents per gallon. Sometimes I wish they just keep it to themselves. It does seem to me that the gas companies feel they can stick it to the So Bend public because they have been warned by the press. Its also amazing that all the stations have the same price , maybe 1 cent different. I fill up the Company truck everyday I work and I keep close eye on who has the cheapest gas prices and they all stay the same in most areas of South Bend. Exception: the corner of 23 and Ironwood is always higher than any other parts of the city that I have found.

Dee: I caught your sarcasm; AZ from Goshen needed to learn that NASCAR developes safety, environmental, and gas saving features that we use today. They work with the automotive companies to make our cars better. It is more than just running around in circles.

Higher gas prices from one region to the next are driven by demand. When demand is high and supply is "low" as some might think, the prices are elevated to stymie the demand. Hence why diesel, a lower grade combustible fuel vs petro, is even higher; because of the demand for it. The gay marriage/illegal immigrants comment belong in other topics falling under the Political Correctness category which has been causing the masses to shake their heads in disbelief for quite some time now.

Posted by: Dee Location: Plymouth on Jun 17, 2008 at 07:35 AM
I was trying to be sarcastic with the NASCAR remark. Actually, I am a rabid NASCAR fan. I just thought it was kind of silly to ban it. All that fuel is paid for by the sponsors and fans that attend the races and purchase the tee shirts and the rest of the stuff. It has nothing to do with what you and I pay...trying to be funny and failed, evidently.

Posted by: Farmer Frank Location: Rural Marshall County on Jun 17, 2008 at 05:12 AM
the gay marriage comment relates to the continued breakdown of any base of morals in our society. If that comment hit home with you , so be it. the road to the west leads to california, happy travels.

I livein Los Angeles and I paid $4.67 for a gallon of gas. I know the National average is lower than what you pay, but I will trade you any way

Posted by: So confused Location: South Bend on Jun 16, 2008 at 11:00 PM
Wait a second Farmer Frank..what exactly does gay marriage have to do with higher gas prices? Give me a break!

Posted by: Gary Location: Granger on Jun 16, 2008 at 09:47 PM
This is ridiculous. I went to Burlington, Iowa this past weekend. Flood torn areas, and the gas there was $3.81. It was $3.96 over in "the region" in the Hammond area right off the toll road next to I80. Why are we paying some of the highest prices in the country?

Posted by: Tony Location: SB on Jun 16, 2008 at 08:36 PM
What the hell does gay marriage have to do with gas prices, you inbred fool.

Posted by: Paul Location: Indiana on Jun 16, 2008 at 06:17 PM
I too want to know why Indiana gas is priced so much higher than the national average. I know that a suspension in the gas tax does not produce that much per person but when you are filling up a diesel tank at nearly $5.00 per gallon that extra cash most certainly will help.

Posted by: Student Location: Indiana on Jun 16, 2008 at 05:31 PM
I feel like I leaned over and touched my toes and there's a gas hose out of my rear!

The big question is why are we 20 cents higher than in Wisconsin, when they have a 14 cent higher gas tax??? can you say we are getting taken!!!!!!

Posted by: Myrt on Jun 16, 2008 at 02:26 PM
To Slade: Just watch Dale, Jr., he knows how to conserve gas! For those against NASCAR, where do you think all of our safety features on vehicles came from? Most of our vehicles have improvements made which were developed by NASCAR. Also, the U.K. pays more for gas because the taxes on the gas also pays for their health insurance. That is part of the reason why gas is much more expensive over there. Also, driving over there is a privilege - if you are getting your license for the 1st time, you get "learner" plates -screw up with learner plates and you walk!!

All this BS makes me relish in the fact that we've become a nation of specialists. Noone grows a garden/ makes maple syrup/ butchers/ cans food/ does anything to provide for themselves outside of trying to earn a paycheck. We all want to go faster/ have the best roads, fanciest vehicles and do no manual labor. A good lesson is probably what we really need. We've become a nation of spoiled people. Like most things, you only get out of it what you put in to it.....so, keep supporting gay marriage/ illegal immigration/ and big oil, and you'll get what you so richly deserve.....one heck of a good lesson. Come on Michiana, lets come up w some ideas on how to save fuel/ economize/ prioritize our lives in the right areas. This country was built on ingenuity and hard work, whenever we get back to that , things will improve......I can hardly wait....

Posted by: mike Location: elkhart on Jun 16, 2008 at 09:32 AM
I think you folks need to give credit where it is due. The biggest reason that oil prices are up, is due to the lovely criminal federal reserve driving the value of the dollar down by cutting interest rates. We are being destroyed by design, you have all waited too long and now we are screwed. American Idol will still be on next year though, so just go back to sleep until that comes back on. Sheep.

Posted by: Rabid Irish Fan Location: Vaselineville, USA on Jun 16, 2008 at 08:24 AM
Daniel Greed = Higher pump prices for the majority. I hope you sleep good at night, knowing you are part of the problem. Thanks, I commute to work and this is killing my pocketbook, thanks again. Duh! You live on less than 150.00 a week after taxes, right. Live with your mom and pop? If you fill your pollution machines every week that has got to be over 150.00 a week. You travel for a living, so you write a fair share of your fuel and travel off at tax time. We need to pay our dues, no, we need to quit getting bent over the gas pumps by other greedy AMERICANS who are only out to make a profit. Furthermore, who are you to tell anyone to get a real job. The waitress is trying to make a living, cheap people like you probably would not leave a tip. The job market sucks right now, I need a part time job to make ends meet and I can't find one. I spend 100 a week just to get to work, if I could bike, I would. 45 miles each way, can't do it. Ease up and be happy you have money, good for you.

Posted by: Dee Location: Plymouth on Jun 16, 2008 at 07:56 AM
Ban NASCAR...that is simply the most inane statement I have ever heard. Yes, let's ban NASCAR, ARCA, Indy racing, the dragsters, the motorcycles, dune buggys and golf carts...Sure! That will solve everything! Why didn't we think of this before?!

Posted by: Connie Location: Warsaw on Jun 16, 2008 at 12:36 AM
Some of these comments are good for a real belly laugh! In others, the lack of thought and logic is rather frightening. For instance, the idiot who thinks we all bought SUV's because we like buying gas...since our car died,(as in- not moving), and since we aren't one of those "wealthy" folks and had no money after dealing with job losses/illness, we had to buy whatever car was available for the money we had. And,since the "rich" folks have been glutting on SUV's for decades, that's what is available in our price range. It will be ten years before the used car market will satisfy your nosiness. So, although it hurts to fill the tank, I drive an SUV. Turns out, it actually gets better mileage than the import compact that died. And, if the gas prices are too high, someone forgot to tell my neighbors. They burn gas constantly just riding in circles around the yard on their bikes/toys. Prices will rise to whatever we willingly pay, and playing with it implies it hasn't hit the top yet.

Posted by: Travis Location: Chicago on Jun 15, 2008 at 10:59 PM
‘Duh!’, please do not tell others to get an education when you do not understand the difference between an and a, yourself. Besides, if you are making less than 10K maybe you need the real job and more importantly, education.

I'm curious as to Why ours is that much higher than the national average. Too bad the article doesn't give a little perspective on that.

Posted by: ING Location: mi on Jun 15, 2008 at 04:54 PM
to duh again: you must me a lot more stupid than i thought. 7-9 dollars a gallon? what the ?!@# is wrong with you? if you can afford to fill up 2 suv's a week on less than 10k a year, either you have someone helping you that you haven't mentioned, or you have income that the government does not tax. americans pay mor tax on EVERYTHING that we do on a daily basis than england or europe or any other nation. we also pay for our own healtcare. i can only imagine what you do for a living you moron!

Posted by: Ronny Location: SB on Jun 15, 2008 at 01:47 PM
Todd, you are obfuscating the truth. Our government has the ability and has had the ability to subsidize and fund alternative sources of energy and has not. Don't blame poor people for somthing rich people do. England pays more because they do not use as much as we do; buy more sell for less. As the information age takes hold more and more Americans are becoming informed to our goverment's neglegence. Like JC said corruption and incompetence.

How do you think that part of the cow got to your plate?

Posted by: Slade Location: Mishawaka on Jun 15, 2008 at 01:23 PM
I'd like to make a comment on this subject, but its time to watch NASCAR. Now those are the guys that really know how to conserve fuel.

Posted by: Shelby Location: Plymouth on Jun 15, 2008 at 01:19 PM
Has anyone heard the recent news that the Saudi's are going to start pumping from a newly drilled well that will produce nearly 500,000 barrels a day? USA uses about 11.1 million barrels per day. This will most certainly bring the supply closer to the demand thus lowering the price at the pump. Now those of you who are quick to point fingers...who visited the Arab Oil minister just last month? And the press said he failed...it was our President. Do you really think this increase in oil production and our Presidents visit is coincidental? He is more competent than the press gives him credit for and most of you believe what the press throws at us. Try making your own opinions based on facts from non-USA news and not believe all of what NBC feeds you.

Posted by: Todd Location: South Bend on Jun 14, 2008 at 09:01 PM
Why are you guys so irogant to believe it is all the Presidents fault? Answer this..why does England pay more then we do? We are the ones to blame. President Bush didn't make your family buy an SUV or a car for every member of your family. We did it to ourselves and it is finally catching up to us. Other countries have been paying these kind of prices for years. It has absolutely nothing to do with our President or really Republicans or Democrats at all! Any politician campaigning on the promise that they will fine gas companies is an idiot. The cost will just get passed back to us and prices will go up even more. There are two main problems I see...1. We use gas like it is water in the US. 2. The commodity buyers have found a way to make good money at our expense while the gas companies take the blame...brilliant. They do it all the time in the beef and ag market. That is who needs to be stopped.

I think it is amazing how totally unfeeling, opinionated and downright snobbish some of the commenters are. But these snobs are NOT the super-rich and they are just as vulnerable as the rest of us. Sorry, Knollwood is NOTHING compared to Beverly Hills or Bel-Aire in California. Daniel, you are big fat fish in a little pond, that's all. So you own a SUV-big deal. You don't have a limo or your own jet-you are nothing and you could fall like the rest of us. The only difference is we've learn to survive and help each other. don't buy anything at the gas station but gas. Let's all stay home on sunday. That will give us family time and put a dent in the economy with one day off. Greed has changed so many things. Way back in the day nothing was open on Sunday. Now most business owners wouldn't want to miss out on one day worth of profits. We all need to stick together and do some price gouging ourselves.

I am glad that these oil prices are going up! Last year the profits from my oil stocks paid off my SUV, this year they paid off my boat, my slip rental at St. Joe, my dues to the Summit Club and also my dues to Knollwood. If my oil stock profits keep increasing at the rate they are now, Next year I'll be able to trade in my 2005 SUV and buy a new 2009 SUV with cash!

i have an suv and a car, at the time of purchase, my husband had a really good job in real estate, but thanks to market, he has had to get another job and our income has severly taken a turn. for 24 gallons (which only last 1 week) i am paying over $100.00. i was thinking about being like the beverly hillbillies and drilling in my own backyard.., one thing that i find interesting tho is that when gas got up and around 3.25-3.50 there was a news story on every other day about people stealing gas, now that it is at 4 dollars, i havent heard 1 story!!!

Posted by: Mrs Smith on Jun 13, 2008 at 05:03 PM
To all you morons who blame the SUV/truck drivers... 1. They could afford them when the purchased them, that's what the American dream is all about. 2. They can't sell them for what they're worth right now - most likely they can't sell them at all... so what choice do they have but to drive them? 3. If they're paid for (like my daughters is)... are they supposed to give them away so they can have a loan payment on a new vehicle PLUS the cost of gas? 4. Not every family can fit into a 4-5 seat car...some people NEED the room of a 6 or 8 passenger van or SUV. 5. Some people NEED a truck for their business - it's hard to haul stuff or pull a trailer with a Neon. So... to all of you who are bellyaching about those of us who at this point have no choice but to put $100 a week into our SUV's and trucks... I say Mind Your Own Business! I ain't asking you to fill it up!

Toopie . . .please enlighten us. What exactly is going on? Please explain, instead of throwing out the usual liberal namecalling when faced with reality.

To Duh. You know nothing of that persons situation, so how dare you talk to her in such an elitist and demeaning way. Not everyone has the brains or means to get and education or improve their situation overnight. Seriously, some of these folks can't even get a job that pays over 10K. For these low earners, a slight change in gas price is a noticable chunk out of their budget. Show some concern and understanding instead of blowing your own trumpet.

Do you see one less car on the road? No. Do you see more bikes: only when the weather is nice. So really, why is this even news.

I was just criticized by someone named "Toopie"! And apparently I have blinders on for some reason, yet ol' Toop fails to explain why. The thing is, speculators are gambling that a Dem in the White House means a pullout from Iraq (Liberatus Interruptus), which in turn means a less stable Middle-East, which in turn means a more chaotic oil market. But I guess I need to forget all that so I can "see what is going on!"

Not much to say except this is crap. Yall are wondering why the economy is slowing down. No cost of living raises so no one is able to spend any extra money. Hell i can't even afford bread this week let alone gas.

It is amazing reading these posts how ignorant most are as to why and how. Starts along time ago folks, no new refineries since the seventies. We now import about 13% of our gas. Production down 40% due to environmental regulation and the left, democrats to you on the West side, contiually stand in the way of drilling of any kind. Thank you Jimmy Carter for Iran and putting the roadblocks in front of nuclear power again under your watch in the seventies when most of these problems began. And to you small minded that think making profit is wrong, the basic America haters, I groan in disbelief of what this entitlement based society is turning into.

Posted by: Dave Location: Elkhart on Jun 13, 2008 at 03:09 PM
To Jim: You call Bill and Chuck fools when it is you Democrats who are the tools. Who has been blocking for how many years drilling in ANWAR. the outer shelf? You left wing whacko's. But if you think Bumbling Barak is the answer...the lights are flashing, the rails are down...but the train just aint a coming! So long as he has someone to write his speeches for him, all will be well. Maybe we can go back to being the whores of the world like when Bill "I didnt inhale" Clinton was in office.

BUDGET!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 13, 2008 at 03:03 PM
Jim, the last time I checked---the demos have been in charge in congress and all they want to do is tax the profits of the oil companies (who *do not set the price of oil*) It is simpleminded people like that prohibit the drilling on U.S. soil. A classic of example of who sets the prices: the mere thought of the saudi's increasing output lowers the price of oil. Just imagine what would happen if we announce that we're going to start to drilling for oil in Alaska, the pacific northwest, the rocky mountains and the gulf---just imagine what that would do the price of oil. there's your answer sherlock. And they guy who gets the elected is the guy that puts for the most solid plan: one that doesn't include windfall tax (we've tried that before, it didn't work) and a plan that doesn't include a tax holiday.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Elkhart on Jun 13, 2008 at 02:50 PM
We need to start drilling in our own country...do you realize China drills for oil off the coast of Florida! We need to stop relying on others for our resources and produce our own!

Posted by: Carol Location: Elkhart on Jun 13, 2008 at 02:49 PM
I was wondering why the Kroger gas station near my home was so busy last evening. How did they know the price was going to jump to $4.19?

Willie, Chuck, and Bill---what morons you 3 are. It is scary to know that there are people who really think like you out there..........get real, you need to pull the blinders off and see what is going on!

Thank you, Gerald. Finally someone realizes that it does not matter who we have in office. When are the American people going to wake-up and demand action? The gas prices clearly do not reflect the amount we are purchasing. What happened to all the excuses about supply and demand? This is all about GREED!!!!

Posted by: Willie Location: Niles on Jun 13, 2008 at 01:48 PM
There is a lower minimum wage for service jobs because of all the unreported tip income. What's really disturbing is Ms. Maddox's statement "How am I supposed to pay for gas when I don't make enough tips?" as if someone should step in and save the damsel in distress. Perhaps she should have thought of the ups and downs of the commodity prices before she took the waitressing job. We here in the most prosperous nation in the world have had it way too good for way too long; so much so that seemingly very few have managed their budget to allow for NORMAL MARKET-DRIVEN PRICE FLUCTUATIONS on everyday items such as gasoline. You conspiracy minded folks chew on this for a while: if the government steps in with price controls on gasoline, do you really think they'll be hesitant to branch out and start controlling every other aspect of our lives? We've made our bed these past 25 years with virtually no new domestic oil exploration; let's get smart and get that changed first.

Someone has to be price gouging somewhere - there were three gas stations in St. Joe last week having gas wars - down as low as $3.63 for a few days - new station trying to drum up business - if they can sell if for that cheap why cant others!

Posted by: lucy Location: south bend on Jun 13, 2008 at 01:02 PM
Yeah it would be nice to ride a bike to work, but then where am I going to shower off the smelly sweat. I don't think the customers would like that. On hot days like this I'd look a hot mess coming into work.--not pretty!

we should have our governor write another letter to Bush so gas can go up higher, WHAT A JOKE THAT GUY IS.

Posted by: Flo Location: Sou ben on Jun 13, 2008 at 12:36 PM
All these people talking about it being a state problem and why the price isnt coming back down need to get a CLUE! Price is goin up cos someone else in the world is buyin more oil than they used to. We're in a bidding war with some other country. They're BUYING our freedom out from under our noses and people do is whine and keep on payin up. Now, I aint sure which country it is, but I bet someone in DC does and pretty soon, they're gonna get put in their place!

Posted by: Marla Location: Mishawaka on Jun 13, 2008 at 12:28 PM
We're all barking up the wrong tree if we expect the government to come up with a solution. Everytime gas goes up, so does the tax money they take in. Last I knew the Federal govt takes 18% of every gallon and Indiana takes 18% of every gallon as well. I for one would like to know what they are using all of that extra tax money for.

About riding bikes to work. Not everyone can do that. I live 10 miles from my job and you have to go thru some pretty bad neighborhoods. There would be no way I'd be riding a bike when it's still dark out with a purse thru there. Also my husband works 3rd shift and works close to 20 miles away. Then there are people with the kids/babys. If we could we would ride our bikes! Also about the typo about waitressing jobs, that is the correct amount. They figure in the tips and that's why they get paid so low. I have a friend doing that, but will be eventually quitting because all that, plus is going just in gas. That's probalby why more people are on welfare now. If you have a waitressing job or minimum wage job, your whole check goes to gas. Why not if you have kids, just stay home and let the government pay you. I make $15 an hour and my husbands on disablility and we are barely making it. Some weeks we have to decide if we should eat or get gas.

Posted by: Ross Location: Granger on Jun 13, 2008 at 12:19 PM
People. here is a news flash, has anyone seen the price of ANYTHING go down after it has gone up, IF there is a cut in the price of gas it will just be an appeasement for all to say OOOOOH they are giving us a break, We will never see 1.00 gas again PERIOD.

Posted by: Steve Location: Lakeville on Jun 13, 2008 at 12:05 PM
...and yet to come is the fall natural gas prices....guaranteed to be at least 50% higher than last year. Lets all enjoy an endless summer in our back yards, waiving the flag and remembering what a great country we had before big oil and politicians screwed it up.

Posted by: SUV Driver Location: South BEnd on Jun 13, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Bobbie can I just say you are an idiot! I drive an SUV because I have 4 boys and they are in sports and I run game to game. I own my vehicle and still can't afford the gas! Just becuase we drive an SUV or a ford pick up does not mean we make more money! That has to be the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Why go by a new car I can't afford that either. I have no car payment and want to keep it that way. To us SUV owners we don't have a choice either and we don't like it just as much as you people who drive small cars. We have family's and kids you think I want to drive that type of vehicle to be cool, STUPID!

Posted by: T Location: South Bend on Jun 13, 2008 at 11:48 AM
To Rich no the $2.13 is not a typo, the waitresses wish it was. I worked in that buisness for 10 years and that is what they make $2.13 an hour and the funny thing is you get people who don't tip and that leaves you making less many then the gas prices. This is so rediculous what do they expect us to do! Nothing but pay the price because we don't have a choice we need to pay for gas to get to work and make our gas money, that is why it doesn't matter to them and they can just keep raising it there is nothing we can do it is something that we need to servive. Thanks Bush as you set back making millions off of us hard working Americans

Posted by: Anonymous Location: south bend on Jun 13, 2008 at 11:47 AM
I am so tired of people saying that if you have a truck or suv you can afford the gas. We have a kia van and we can't afford to go buy a smaller car to save many on gas. People had what type of car they had probably way before all these gas prices started going on. What are Joe and "our man Mitch" doing...absolutely nothing and they won't be getting my vote.

Posted by: Chuck Location: Walkerton on Jun 13, 2008 at 11:47 AM

Hopefully when McCain becomes President we can see better days ahead such as a victory in Iraq with a stable environment for our troops to serve for many decades to come as well as a thriving US market.

Posted by: Paul Location: Mishawaka on Jun 13, 2008 at 11:10 AM
Dumb question. Why is there reports on the gas getting higher and higher, but no reports on anything being done to lower it? If this is effecting nationwide and everyone is driving less, wouldn't that make demand less? If we are lessening demand, how are prices still rising?

Posted by: irritated on Jun 13, 2008 at 11:02 AM
Bobbie...I drive a large SUV, and I can barely afford the gas these days. Why would I buy a new smaller car..when my SUV is paid off. why would i want a new car paymt and also pay outragous gas prices?? Just because people drive SUV's doesn't mean they can afford the gas!!! Think about it! We are ALL hurting from this.

Posted by: Homer Location: Plymouth on Jun 13, 2008 at 10:59 AM
Why drill in ANWR if that oil will just go to China anyway. I say leave it there until the Govt nationalizes the oil companys and we know that any oil coming out og ANWR stays here in the USA and not to some oil company who'll sell it to the highest bidder.

Posted by: SUV Owner Location: sb on Jun 13, 2008 at 10:43 AM
To all those complaining about suv and large vehicles - there may be a reason for that. I purchased mine quite a while ago, hauled kids to school, sports, etc. It is now paid for, insurance is low and I just can't afford a newer small car. Debt ratio thanks to economy won't allow it. So quite being to quick to judge us - many of us plan our trips to use the least amount as possible. Maybe you'd be happy if I quit my job - got on welfare - and still kept my suv. Many of the small car owners now were owners of big cars but all of a sudden are better than the rest. Also, waitresses have never had the same wages as minimum - they've always depended on tips.

Yes, Rich, it is actually 2.13 an hour waitress wage. I was talking to a waitress one time at a restaurant and she told me that is what she is making. (This is about 2 weeks ago.) Sad, but true.

This really sucks! You know an average person that makes say $8.00 an hour has to work one eight hour day just to pay for one tank of gas. Then you have 4 other work days of the week to pay bills with. Everything's going up but our wages. What are we supppose to do?

I've run out of blood to sell to buy gas.

Posted by: Rich Location: Granger on Jun 13, 2008 at 08:26 AM
$2.13 an hour plus tips has to be a typo. Even minimum wage hasn't been that low in decades! I was making $2.85 an hour on minimum wage back in 1988. As for the gas prices...one day we will look back and remember the good ole days when it was ONLY $4 a gallon. Regardless of who wins the presidential election this year, each candidate has already spoken of the need to target high gas prices. But alas, they could have done something about it all along. Another reason why politicians are so dang rich is that wealthy companies seeking to stay rich will line political pockets with money to keep things the way they are and the oil industry is no exception.

Posted by: Jill Location: South Bend on Jun 13, 2008 at 08:11 AM
How stupid we all are. $4.19 a gallon, rising property taxes, higher groceries, it will never end. We need to do more than complain. There is strength in numbers. Start by voting OUT all political office holders who have held more than one term. Time for new leadership. We always get stuck paying for their mistakes and lack of A conscience. Take for example P. Bauer: He receives $90K from Ivy Tech not counting what he makes as a representative. And to top it off he never wants to talk to his constitients. Gee, I'd like to sit on a couch all day in an office with the door closed and the lights off too and get paid for it. It's time to boycott GAS!

How do they think we can support our family with gas and that of grocerys going up, yea you can bugget, but that still don't solve the problem!!! I just talked to my brother the other day and he said that when he went to this one gas sation, he went in to pre-pay, this was when gas was $3.98, they told him he had to wait for 5mins because the gas prices were about to go up ($4.20). What kind of crap is this?!!!!! If the sign says $3.98 that is what you are suppose to get gas for, not you have to wait, bull bananie!!!

Posted by: Don Location: South Bend on Jun 13, 2008 at 08:01 AM
I have corrisponded 3 times with our worthlesss govenor about why gas prices are higher here than the rest of the U.S.. He says it's a national problem and has nothing to do with the state. Well, if it has nothing to do with the state then why the national gas difference? Why down the road is gas higher than up the road? It's very clear he's getting some kickback for this. A year ago I corrisponded with the same idiot and asked him to investigate price gouging at the pumps. His reply, I won't get involved because it's "free enterprise." I responded, "So is bank robbery," so you won't stop that either? We are really hurting and it's not going to get any better until someone cares.

Analysts go on tv or the radio and report that gas will peak at 4.15 a gallon , and a half hour later all the gas stations in michiana jack their prices up to 4.19, coincidence? I don,t think so,just another way to hose you at the pumps. also how come when crude oil go up 2.00 the price at the pumps go uo .25 cents a gallon, but when oil prices go down 7.00 a barrel the price at the pumps go down a whopping 4 cents a gallon?

Posted by: Anonymous on Jun 13, 2008 at 05:23 AM
This gas price thing is really serious. I don't think people understand how high it could get. Something really needs to be done about it. It is affecting people's lives. I am on vacation next week and usually I am excited about having a week off of work, but this is the first time ever that I can saw that we are going absolutely no where. Can't afford it. It truly is depressing when you work so hard and can't have any fun because all of the fun money goes in the tank. This country is headed, if not already into, a recession.

Posted by: mike Location: elkhart on Jun 13, 2008 at 03:10 AM
They are playing the same old game. Oil goes up, gas goes up 20 cents a gallon. Oil goes down, gas drops 2 cents a gallon. Oil goes back up to where it was and gas goes up another 20 cents a gallon. As long as they are allowed to do this they will keep doing it.

Posted by: John Trojan Location: South Bend on Jun 13, 2008 at 02:51 AM
Funny thing is oil went down. WOW it goes down and nothing happens at the pump. It goes up and the price at the pump jumps up. BIG BROTHER doesn't care about the little person. How much has Bush's stocks made during his time in office? Here retires and goes away with a BIG FAT PROFIT!!!!
