BEND, Ore. (AP) -- Barack Obama is barely mentioning Hillary Clinton as he campaigns today in Oregon, focusing instead on John McCain.
The Illinois senator said a contest between himself and the Arizona Republican is going to be about the "very clear choice on policy" -- not who's theoretically more liberal or more conservative.
But Obama also warned that controversial issues, such as McCain's ties to the Keating Five savings and loan scandal are fair game. And he called McCain's proposal for a temporary halt in the federal gasoline tax a pander and a gimmick.
He did not mention that Clinton supports a similar gas tax holiday.
Obama also says he'll soon campaign in Michigan and Florida, two battleground states whose Democratic primaries were essentially nullified by party disputes, angering many voters.
Obama today passed Clinton in the race for superdelegates, making it all the more likely he'll be on the ballot against McCain in November.

JC, yes, I have been to West Virginia. My family lived in what is now West Virginia in the early 1700's. I have ancesters that fought in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Civil War (for the North), the Spanish American War, WWI and WWII. Meanwhile, I see you're just as Elitist as Pilsner and Obama. Are the people of West Virginia not good enough for you?

Posted by: Fred on May 16, 2008 at 03:05 PM
Does everyone see the elite attitude of Pilsner. If you don't agree with him, you're "dumb folks". This is just like Obama. He's superior to everyone else.

Hillary for President of West Virginia!!! YEEEEEHHHAAAAAAWWWWW!!!!

Joe, you get a clue. This stupid flag lapel thing is just a conspiracy by the right wing to keep Obama down. I recently heard that he did wear a flag pin and I was put off that he had to do this to satisfy dump folks like yourself.

Posted by: joe Location: south bend on May 15, 2008 at 05:01 AM
so jc in other words you would rather have a president that shuns our country by not respecting it i.e. wearing the flag pin; facing the flag during the national anthem and basically no true respect for our country by what we have heard him say time after time. Personally I would rather have someone that shows that they respect our country and would fight and die for our country, not one that criticizes it time and time again. Think people; get a brain in your head. And for all you who think mccain is too rich to know what it's like to spend $4/gallon on gasoline last time I checked a majority of politicians have not a clue about that and hollywood celebrities/sports players who we pay 100s of dollars to go see have not a clue either; however, we seem to have no problem with that

I'm not concerned about his choice of jewelry, but his wife's snotty anti-American comment and his pastors racist anti-American doctrine managed to turn me (and most people I know) off of him completely-and that was before I got to hear all his socialistic, anti-American ideas.

My husband is a Vietnam Vet and they did not pull him out just because we got a new President. He came home and was treated like crap from all the so called Americans. Do you really believe they can pull them out of Iraq just like that? Well you are all in for a rude awakening. Just ask a Vietnam Vet!

JC I know a lot of people in this state without a elementary education too. And they all voted for Obama. What does that tell us?

Posted by: Anon on May 14, 2008 at 10:24 PM
I'll Tell you What thank you for that comment. I feel the same wasy as well as a lot of people I know. When I heard his wife's comment that was it for me. So much more will be coming out about him in the future. I can't wait to see all these people on here saying good things about this Anti-American racist man eat their words. This man will not get my vote the Hillary followers will turn to McCain first.

Wow she blew him away in West Virginia now I can't wait for her to blow him away in Kentucky. I love it!!!!!!!!!

Fred, Have you ever been to West Virginia? Most of the places down there are so backwards and rural. Half the people there barely have a elementary education!

Posted by: jc Location: elk county on May 13, 2008 at 02:40 PM
I am so tired of hearing about the stupid flag pin. How many of you that are crticizing Obama as being unpatriotic stand during the national anthem, put your hand over your heart, take your hat off, face the flag and sing along with the national anthem. Half the people in America can not even sing the national anthem, nor can they say the pledge of allegiance. I am tired of the same old rut we have in the white house. Just becuase people are "experienced" does not make them better for that position. We need someone with fresh ideas who will unite our country and not get drug down by the lobbyists and special interests and work for us. People need to wake up and see the situation for what it is do we really want more jobs loss becuase of Nafta or 100 years more of war????

Posted by: Anon Location: Here on May 13, 2008 at 02:20 PM
Fred, wow, what a prediction. Oh wait, EVERYONE KNOWS THAT, Creskin! It STILL doesn't matter. She will LOSE overall. So enjoy your little victory now, you will lose this war, pal. Obama is our next president. McCain is past the mandatory retirement age in most corporations, they should have that in government as well.

Posted by: Fred on May 12, 2008 at 08:38 PM
Pilsner, Obama is going to get humiliated in West Virginia, followed by Kentucky. It's going to be great.

Its time for the American people to demand from their government to arrest and put in jail the people in charge of the oil companies and not worry as much about who is going to be the worst candidate. The oil companies love to see us bicker over candidates and oversee the 384 billion dollars in gouging profit they made last year.Write your reps and tell them that ufo,s scare in the 70s, didn,t work than and election scare is not going to work now.Re enact the windfall profit tax before the oil companies have time to build a golden cow for Mr. Bush.

Willie, I agree. Senators are just looking for a job promotion to the next step. We need to do what large companies who are in trouble do and bring in an outside person to clean up the mess and not promote from within.

Posted by: Pilsner on May 12, 2008 at 03:54 PM
If you are a Latino/Hispanic voter please hear me out!! Obama is the best candidate for you. If you is selected for the Democratic nomination, he will probably select Bill Richardson as his running mate. Both Obama and Bill Richardson will do a lot to improve the quality of life for Hispanics in this country. Bill Richardson lives in a mostly Hispanic state and knows what issues to tackle. Yes, VIVA Mexico and Obama!!!

Well said, Vote Smart. People seem to be willing to swallow anything a politician promises, even though time and time again they fail to deliver. "Hillary will fix healthcare!" "McCain will lower gas prices!" "Obama will restore America's position in the world!" --- An election is like a job interview; a long, boring, drawn-out job interview. And in a job interview, the best indicator of future performance is past performance. Based on that notion, I don't like ANY of my choices; there's a reason Senators don't normally win the Presidency.

To Bill, I am white. A white female. But I don't think the attitude you have towards blacks is correct at all or fair. I have known some black people who have the "oh, poor me" attitude you talk about, but in general black people are just like me and everyone else -- just people. A few whiny black people should not influence the obvious RACISM left in some white people, such as yourself. You should be ashamed. Perhaps people like you are why some black people complain about past and current treatment? Get some help, man.

Lets see...some of you guys want to put a person in office who cannot win, knows she cannot win except by a huge mistake in the Obama camp, has a ton of thing in her past that Obama could bring up at any time to knock her out but won't. This same person is having her top donors asking her to step out now and her campaign is 2.5 million dollars in debt as of today with no hope of gaining new major donors. And you want her in office why? She can't even keep her own campaign finances in the black.

He's aiming to screw up the Democrats chance to get into the white house...Obviously he believes the working people in this country are going to switch from Hillary to himself...Wake up you non-flag wearing, no experience, possible racist politician. You may be on the ballot in November but the only way you'll see the white house will be if the secret service allows you in for a visit...Oh yeah, tell your wife nobody appreciated her comment about being "proud to be an American for the first time". There are too many true Americans that are still fuming about that one. UNREAL!!! Hillary first, John McCain second and no vote for you third.

"True Dem"? I'm proud of being smart enough to vote independantly-the way our forefathers intended. Party voting takes all of the THOUGHT out of a momentous decision. It is a form of "bigotry" (as if WHAT they are is more important than WHO they are) to vote for someone because of their party affiliation instead of because of their experience, position on issues, previous records, etc. I am not "Republican" or wealthy-barely cleared the poverty line last year. When the time comes, I will simply make my choice based on the candidate's abilities, stance on issues important to me, and past performances. But not on their promises. You gotta' watch out for all those pretty promises. Campaign promises are like soap bubbles. Everyone makes theirs as big as possible, but in the end-poof! Nothing but a wet spot and stinging in the eyes.

Posted by: It is time for a change on May 11, 2008 at 09:22 PM
Hillary is just like Bill, McCain is just like Bush. Obabma is a normal person who has worked just like you and I and knows the importance of a dollar and knows how hard it is for the working class to make it. It is time for a change and Obama is the change. And by the way, no matter who you vote for, you are still going to be paying $4.00/gallon for gas, nobody is going to be able to change that.

Its good to see the struggle between Obama and Hillary! Coming to a close! Now we can get to the real source of the problem! McCain! and his same old backward politics. It is also good to see that America did not fall for Hillary and her negative campaign and who is out just to make history for herself! Hillary is not who she say she is and we will not be fooled again! McCain has made so many mistakes in the past;he is going to spend much of his time apologizing and regreting his past judgement. Obama will restore America to its rightful place in the world!as true leaders! No more GOOFY politics of GW Bush and his Cronies!Theres finally hope for this nation and it comes with Barack Obama!!

Hillary could win all of the remaining contests 70-30% but without the superdelegates it is over for her. Obama is, barring a disaster, the Democratic nominee. ANYONE who calls themselves any kind of Democrat will rally behind Obama because a vote for McCain is a vote for four more years of Bush. Clinton supporters may not care for Obama, but they hate Bush and they will not vote for four more years like the last four we have lived through. McCain is worse than Bush on the economy, worse on foreign policy, worse on the environment and worse when it comes to children's issues.

Posted by: Bill Location: South Bend on May 11, 2008 at 05:35 PM
Derald, I agree. On top of that, this country does not need a black president. I can hear it now: Welfare is going up, more free black campaigns for schooling, more black tv, and not to mention let as many mexicano's across the border to strengthen himself. Blacks already feel everybody owes them a handout, and "owe poor me" attitude. Please, this would be the blind leading the blind.

If Obama picks Hillary for a running mate he'd better watch out. Otherwise, he might "commit suicide" and throw the gun uphill--like Vince Foster did.

Well I hate to see a race that is Racial and that is what this is turning out to be. Granted I would never vote for pure evil and in my opinion that is what Hillary is. Too many people died the last time the Clinton's were in office; We have had 20 years of Clinton Bush it is time for a change our government can't take much more of the bull put out by either. I just wish people could see that if Obama is truly a racist then America is doomed. We need a united America not racially divided America. I personally do not like any of the remaining candidates but what can we do We need to find the lesser of the evils no more embarrassing Presidents. Find a Good strong fair and just leader with strong Christian values (Not a fanatic) just a strong sense of right and wrong. Keep America strong and cast your votes for someone that will do the peoples will and not more pocket lining.

I can't believe some of you actually think that Billary is better suited for office! Her "plans" and all that hot air that she's blowing is worthless-at least Barack's ideas are for long term and not basically like slapping a Band-Aid to temporarily "cover" the problem like Billary and McCain want to do! I used to be straight Republican-this year, it will be different. We don't need Billary in office-her husband was worthless enough-why add to it and let her in there? To screw it up even further?

Obama and his baggage? Are you kidding me? The White House would have to build more closets for Hillary's life baggage and the skeletons. She has been involved in some sort of controversy or investigation the majority of her political career. It does not matter how much Obama is down in West Virginia..Hillary cannot catch up and she lost several super delegates to boot this week. The race is now between McCain and Obama. Every major news source has called it and the party will soon. Get ready..its going to be a fun election. My vote will be for McCain at this point.

Do not hold your breath waiting for the current administration to do anything for the average american. You will suffocate while waiting! How about the current stimulus package? My w-2 for 2007 was 138,000.00 dollars this amount as I understand is some 3 to 5 times the average ... yet I receive a 1800.00 dollars yesterday to help stimulate the economy ??? Whomever came up with the plan to give me an additional 1800.00 when I w2 138k is surely out of touch with the reality of daily life. This is how the republicans govern!?? go figure. Give this money to the single mom, or the dad who is not a deadbeat and pays his surrort. Give it a GI trying to live on 15k per year.... what a F@#%$ked up plan that was.. but thanks George.. I will just squirrel this money away.. like most affluent republicans and let the rest of the country starve!

If the main concept for having super delegates is to allow a block of votes to be cast for someone other than the popular candidate.. this seems to open the door for fraud ... a way for someone to buy the vote of a delegate ... as always in the USA the almighty dollar will prevail .. not right or wrong ... not the human spirit ... not the force of truth or goodness.... $$$$$$$$$$. this is the bottom line. It is all about the money! The candidate that spends the most, or receives the most special interest money. I hope the spineless bigot want to be Democrats do vote for Mc Cain because you will be on the LOSING team! You are all spineless losers! Stand for something or fall for anything! DO THE MATH everything has gone up exponentially !! with the exception of the average americans wages and standard of living.Lets stay in Irac for 100 years{NOT} lets give tax shelter to companies that leave {NOT} suspend the .18cent gas tax not! Im saying lets try to change for the better! SOLIDARITY

My only fear with these super delegates is that somehow,Barack wins a majority of delegates but loses the nomination on the super delegates. Whether she buys them or the "PaRTY" coerces the supers to vote for her? And if a person could switch to Mc Cain simply on the dem.nomination going to Obama ... well they were never a true Dem. to begin with ... in fact they would be merely a bigot or a closet HATER if you will! As I have said before I would be compelled to vote for Mickey Mouse or even Donald Duck if they were running opposed to the current administration! Middle class America can not afford 4 more years of this! Everything seems to be rising except our wages, and standard of living! I would say if the gas prices dont cramp your style and all is well in your world today ... you are most likely a good republican earning enough to live comfortably .. otherwise the other 90% of America should take a long hard look @ Obama. He is offering a new deal...

McCains wife refuses to release her tax records because she's an heiress to a billion dollar fortune. McCain & his wife file separate and he himself released his records, he make like $400,000 without his wifes income. Translated; McCain is another Bush who has never lived in a real working American's shoes. He has no idea how paying $4 a gallon for gas affects a budget. He's a RICH career politician just like Bush.

In my opinion if it is Obama versus McCain. Obama has a greater chance at winning because the african american/african/non-caucasian race will all come out and vote for him because of how great it will be to have a president of color. We have already seen record numbers of people voting at the primaries...why because they want a black president. NO, I am not racist. I am just stating facts. However personally I would rather have a man that would fight and die for our country as president and one that has political experience. Not one that would back the Muslim nation if it came down to it; not one that does not wear the U.S. flag pin on his suit anymore because he believes its biased. Obama may just be the one that will turn this country into a third world country. He also believes in national health care which means all those individuals who do not have jobs get free health care; but if you have a job you will have to pay for good health care. Its not a tough decision to me.
