Chris Deguch, 43-years-old from South Bend, is behind bars on conspiring to commit murder charges.

In court documents, Deguch tells police he bought a 1995 Corvette a few days before going to jail on an unrelated matter. He put the car in the care of someone only referred to as 'the co-conspirator.'

The co-conspirator visited Deguch in jail and told him two women took the car and, "messed it up."

Deguch then admits to police in the documents he told the visitor to, "get my car back and take care of the ."

Deguch says he paid the co-conspirator $10,000 for "taking care of that ."

The document goes on to say the co-conspirator acted out the orders, left the jail and killed Melissa Shields.

Shield's body was found back in September at Ravina Park on South Bend's southeast side.

"We hunted Mr. Deguch for several days. With the pressure from the South Bend Police Department, Mishawaka, the State, it was enough to make Mr. Deguch turn himself in," says Tim Corbett, St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Commander.

"I'm confident that the investigators will be able to go forward and secure the evidence we need to identify the perpetrator of the actual of killing this woman," says Michael Dvorak, St. Joseph County Prosecutor.

"If you want to take someone's life, take your own. Leave everybody else alone," explains Elmarie Coleman, who lives near Ravina Park.

Police haven't made clear the connection between Shields and Deguch, but court documents show them having extensive criminal records, including both having drug charges.

The name Deguch is familiar in Michiana. Chris is an adopted brother to Paul Deguch. Paul was a police officer for the South Bend Police Department. He was killed in the line of duty in 1997.
