16 Pack-A-Backpack 2014

A simple notebook, scissors, a backpack; what are these worth? To a small child starting school, they could mean the difference between learning and helplessness. That’s why NewsCenter 16 is teaming up with McDonald’s, Notre Dame Federal Credit Union, Meijer, U-93, the Kelly Cares Foundation, the Saint Vincent De Paul Society, and area agencies for the 16 Pack-A-Backpack school supply drive. Over the past thirteen years, NewsCenter 16 and our volunteer organizations have distributed more than 41 thousand back to school kits to deserving children in grades K through 6 throughout the community.

To help answer your questions, we’ve pulled together some information about this year’s 16 Pack-A-Backpack.

As a business leader, what can I do to help 16 Pack-A-Backpack?
You play a key role supporting Pack-A-Backpack. Here are some ways you can help:

1. Encourage your employees and customers to support 16 Pack-A-Backpack. Perhaps you can organize your own company-wide drive and bring the donation to one of our collection locations on Saturday, August 2nd.

2. Consider making a monetary donation. The money collected will be used to buy additional school supplies as needed to meet the demand. Donations can be made to the Saint Vincent De Paul Society, 520 Crescent Ave, South Bend, Indiana 46617. If you write a check, please be sure to write 16 Pack-A-Backpack in the memo portion of the check.

3. Provide a team of volunteers to support the warehousing and packing efforts. From August 4 to August 15, Pack-A-Backpack will need teams of volunteers to sort donations and prepare supplies for delivery to area agencies. Sorting will take place at a facility in South Bend during regular business hours. If you’d like to provide a team, please contact Janelle Fricke at WNDU at (574) 284-3162.

4. Consider donating your unused company office products. If your business has gone through changes and you have an abundance of outdated company office supplies, Pack-A-Backpack can put them to use. If they’re acceptable for grades K through 6, we’ll gladly take your unused but outdated pens, pads, pencils, etc.

If I need school supplies, who do I contact?
WNDU will provide a list of agencies to the United Way by late-July. To find a participating organization, please contact the United Way helpline at 211.
