The nationwide beef recall is hitting food pantries around Michiana.

The Food Bank of Northern Indiana is forced to throw out five thousand pounds of donated meat.

Workers picked up the recalled frozen ground beef from the 50-plus food agencies they serve.

Friday afternoon they loaded five thousand pounds of bad beef to dump at a local landfill.

Eight thousand pounds had already been used before the recall.

Sadly, many food pantries are now left without any meat until another meat donation is made.

“This breaks our heart. We received close to 13 thousand pounds of hamburger meat and it was all frozen, well wrapped, and looked like good stuff,” says Dennis Brown with the Food Bank of Northern Indiana.

Typically the food bank only gets meat donations from the government three or four times a year, and they're not expecting another shipment anytime soon.

If you would like to help the Food Bank, donations can be made at their office in South Bend.

They are open 8am to 4pm. Frozen foods and meats may be brought in. The Food Bank says a donation of $1.00 will enable them to purchase $8.00 worth of food.
