Kyle Hannon from Elkhart's Chamber of Commerce describes a section of Main Street as, "the lost tooth in Elkhart's smile."
There's a lot happening on either side of it, but nothing in between.
"So the question is, what goes right there?" Hannon asks.
The area we are talking about is known as Civic Plaza. Elkhart's redevelopment commission was working with a developer from Columbus to build a hotel, as well as shops and condos, there.
Marriott recently rejected the idea. This comes after a thumbs down from Hilton and Holiday Inn.
"It means that a plan isn't going to go through. It doesn't mean another plan won't come up," Hannon says. "I have no reason to believe there won't be some kind of proposal for this area."
One proposal circulating town suggests building up a nearby green area into a park.
"A park would be a wonderful thing for downtown and is a site that can always be maintained for future development," says Diana Lawson from Elkhart County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
"It's in the center of downtown so it's a critically important site for future development. So I say let's take it easy. Let's just let things happen, and let's work towards what our goal is."
