Illness scare squelched at Eau Claire school

The sad and unexpected death of a Berrien County 6-year-old creates worries of an illness at the elementary school.

A number of parents called Newscenter 16 and the School District’s Office with concerns that a serious illness could be spreading around the school.

Recently a first grader at Lybrook Elementary in Eau Claire died unexpectedly.

According to the Berrien County Health Department when a young child dies, many assume it’s meningitis.

Autopsy results show he did not die of meningitis though.

School officials say many students are out sick with the flu or cold, not anything serious.

“Very frightening that he passed away period… let alone cause an uproar in the school,” says parent Amy Cox.

The health department says at least six students were confirmed to have meningitis like symptoms that turned out to be the flu.
