He grew up a die-hard Notre Dame fan.

Heck, he was named after an Irish football player.

So not even falling victim to the flu was stopping Penn's Braxston Cave from officially signing his letter of Intent on Wednesday to play football for the Fighting Irish.

"It's just a big relief," the 6'4," 295 pound Cave said Wednesday morning. "I've waited for it for a long time. And now its a sealed deal. I'm just really excited."

Rivals.com lists Cave as the 4th best center in the country.

The Kingsmen senior has developed a strong bond with his entire recruiting class -- a class that is ranked second in the country by Rivals. He says that's because of the school they will soon be playing for.

"Notre Dame's a special place," Cave explained. "You get on that campus together and you don't want to turn away. It's just Notre Dame."

Irish head coach Charlie Weis credited Cave along with QB recruit Dayne Crist for bringing this class together.

"Every time you turn around -- the only problem with Braxston is I see him too much," Weis said. "He's here all the time. He's done a great job, and not only is he a great player but he's been one of our best recruiters"

Weis even joked that Braxston's mom is the mom of the entire recruiting class.

"I don't know how many pasta dinners she's made, but it seems like every time everyone comes in town, they're all hanging at Braxston's house," Weis explained.

"His parents have been great. They've opened their doors."

To prepare for Notre Dame, Cave is currently working with a personal trainer in order to keep his conditioning at a top level.

"They said 'focus on center,'" Cave said. "I've got some plays from Coach Latina to work on."

"So, I'm just focusing on center. If I have to change positions, that's fine with me. I've got to do whatever I've got to do to help the team."

Ha, right, a hater in disguise. You are funny. Everyone knows you are just an anonomyi acting dumb. If your not, sorry. If you are a fan, settle down. What am I saying, your not a fan, just a obsessive hater. Maybe ritalin is a bad choice for you and an antipsychotic would be more in line. Good luck, headcase.

Notre Dame won't even look at anyone who can't make the grades, no matter who they are. If they don't have the SAT scores to be accepted, they don't get in. Kind of shallow to think just because he has talent on the field he wouldn't have good grades don't you think? Notre Dame is known for putting players on academic probation when their grades slip in the classroom. I can't remember who it was that either last year or the previous year was suspended from the team for poor grades in the class? I just remember it was a key player. Academics, maybe you need to do your homework before making a comment such as that.

To Academics, He will be doing fine in the classroom also. ND does not accept a player if he fall short of certain academic marks. Note the running back from St Joseph High School the coach Weiss helped to get signed on at Marshall. Go Braxton!!

Academics, last time I checked (30 seconds ago) Notre Dame has a 96% graduation rate among Student Atheletes. To answer your question I would say yes he is good in the class room, ND has a tough admissions dept. If you can't perform in the classroom, they won't let you perform on the field.

Way to go Braxston!!! Good people desire good things. God Bless!

People seem to forget college is about academics. There is no mention of this in the story. Is he as good in the class room as he is on the field?

Glad to see Cave is on board! I am really looking forward to this coming season and seeing the talent come out.

ND Fan, you know very little about football let alone Notre Dame Football

Ha, we all knew he (anon) was a joke and had no heart. Atleast steve-o was a man about it, even in defeat. I just found a piece I want to share about Coach Weis and recruiting. "By this time, all my memories of recruiting head-to-head against Notre Dame had been revived. When you walk into a recruit's house, you are taking on Mom, the Pope, the academics, the Notre Dame tradition, the fight song and Touchdown Jesus. Add Charlie Weis, his enthusiasm, his staff and his background to the equation, and the thunder may be shaking down sooner rather than later." Bill Curry ESPN College Football Analyst and former College Coach. Fire away amonymi.

Good for Braxston, I hear he is a great person and obviously a very talented athlete. It sounds more like he is making his verbal commitment more official with his letter of intent. I guess some people don't read thoroughly enough before commenting.

help return ND to glory my man. Work hard and stay out of trouble. Here is your chance, so take advantage of it.
