Police now have more information in the investigation of the death of a Michigan State University student.

The young woman's body was found last week on a golf course in
Chesterton.

But police still don’t know why the woman was in the area or how she died.

Police are calling the death of 20-year old Rylan Cotter "suspicious," and it definitely is.

The Porter County Coroner says she died from massive blunt trauma to her chest and abdomen.

And her body was found fully clothed on a golf course, in a town where she had no known ties.

Police have released a picture of Michigan state student Rylan Cotter with hopes people may remember seeing her last week.

“At this point in time we are not ruling out anything,” said Chesterton Police Chief George Nelson.

Tuesday, police provided more information on the time line leading up to Cotter’s death.

Police now know she left East Lansing early in the morning Monday, around 2:00 am EST, January 7th; and checked into a hotel in Benton Harbor around 3:30am EST.

Around 11:30 am EST, she checked out of the hotel, and around 4:00 pm CST, she was seen in Chesterton alive.

But two days later, on Wednesday, Cotter was found dead on the grounds of the Brassie Golf Club in Chesterton.

“Each time she was seen she was always apparently alone,” Nelson said.

And so far, no one, not even Cotter's parents, know of any reason she would be in Chesterton.

Police also found Cotter's car, a maroon 1997 Oldsmobile 4-door, which they're hoping people may have seen last week.

Police say the car was found in a parking lot about a half mile from where her body was found. They're not sure how long it had been there, but she was last seen near that area on Monday.

Golf course employees say the body was found very close to the bottom of an electrical tower, out in an open area of the course.

And while the injuries are severe, the county coroner hasn't been able to determine a manner of death yet.

“Manner of death would be whether it would be homicide, suicide, accidental, that’s unknown at this point in time. There has been no manner of death determined. The cause of death has been blunt force trauma to the abdomen and body area, nothing to the head,” Nelson said.

Police say it could be more than a month before they have more answers, as they and the coroner wait for test results.

It's still also unclear how long Cotter's body was on the golf course.

Employees say no one golfed that hole last Tuesday, because of flooding, and she was found by an employee the following day.

Police still have a lot of work ahead of them. Chesterton police say they're leading the case, and are working with Michigan state police, and MSU police.

“It's not a common type of investigation for us, but we've giving it whatever resources we have available. Any help the citizens can give us as to when they may have seen her, that's why we've given out her picture, and the picture of her car,” Nelson said.

They're asking anyone with information to contact the Chesterton police department at (219) 926-1136.
