Police say a body found last week at the Brassie Golf Club in Chesterton is that of a Michigan State University student.

The body of 20-year-old Rylan Cotter was found fully-clothed on the course on Wednesday, and golf club employees found no signs of foul play.

But the Porter County Coroner says an autopsy shows the woman died of massive blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen.

We're told the coroner does not know whether the death was a homicide, a suicide, or an accident.

The details of her death aren't the only mystery--there are reports the student's parents say they have "no clue whatsoever" why she would even be in Chesterton.

Her family lives in the Lansing area, where she went to school.

And in Chesterton, a community who never knew Cotter isn't sure what to make of the shocking discovery.

Dale Jalovecky says he plays at Brassie Golf Club every day, whether permitting, which included Wednesday, when the student's body was found.

“See the tower there, that's where they were at, and that's an open soybean field,” Jalovecky said, describing where police and the corner were investigating Wednesday.

He says just two days before, he had played the hole where she was found - #6 - and had not seen anything.

“Man that would have been upsetting if we would have walked up on it. The superintendent that works out here that drove up alongside that hole there, he said that it wasn't like she was stashed in the weeds, you could see her,” Jalovecky said.

While many questions surrounding the student's death still remain unanswered, there's still yet another question, weather neighbors have a reason to be concerned considering the graphic nature of the autopsy's results.

She was found just yards away from a nature trail that's commonly used by neighbors.

“It's really freaky; I’ve been using it less and less now. I used to ride up and down every day,” said Mitch McGary, a neighbor who was riding his bike on the trail Sunday night, near the spot where Cotter was found.

Police have tried to calm the fears of those who live in the subdivision about a quarter mile away.

“They don't think the person, whoever did this to her, is still around: they left. So there shouldn't be really any concern, you know people can go back on the trail and do their normal thing,” said Valerie McGary, Mitch’s mother. She was walking her dog on the trail Sunday night; and says her neighbors, who work for the police department, are keeping her updated.

But at the same time, until they know what really happened, they'll be on their guard.

“Hopefully we'll get something this week to let everybody around here know you know what happened to the poor student, because I have a daughter who's 20, so it’s scary,” Valerie McGary said.

“There's no details so nobody knows how to act, if it comes out she was murdered, it'd be different, you know,” Jalovecky said.

Investigators say it will likely be weeks before they know what caused the blunt trauma to Cotter's chest and abdomen, and ultimately her death.

However, authorities also believe Cotter spent Monday night in Benton Harbor, MI.

They're trying to piece her last days together.

The only other clue they found was an abandoned car with Michigan plates in a parking lot about a half mile away from where she was found, that they then traced to a home in Michigan. Authorities were then able to make contact with Cotter’s parents, who reportedly identified their daughter’s photograph Friday.
