Knox High School student killed in crash

A one-vehicle crash claimed the life of a Knox High School student Monday night.

17-year-old Drew Shearin crashed into a NIPSCO pole on SR 8, east of the Yellow River Bridge in Starke County.

The accident happened just before 10 p.m.

Shearin was trapped in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shearin was a drum major for the Knox High School band. He was also involved with theater at the school and was awarded the Indiana Music Educators Association Award twice for songs he composed.

Knox High School officials describe Shearin as being a very talented and gifted student, who was loved by his classmates.

Grief counselors are on hand at Knox High School to comfort students and staff.

The accident remains under investigation.
